Sabre Orin Brown's clients keep disappearing. With seemingly no connection between the cases, Sabre enlists the help of her southern PI friend, JP, and her best friend, Bob, to find each of them--before it's too late.
In her race against the clock, Sabre must determine whether contemporary horrors are being buried in the shadow of dark traditions--or if it's something else at work. A conspiracy years in the making, secrets hidden for decades, and the twisted work of a mysterious society have all come together in the ultimate test of the strength of Sabre's conviction.
Teresa Burrell maintained a private law practice where her work focused on abused minors. She has received several awards for her countless hours of pro bono work with children and their families. Burrell has also enjoyed a satisfying career as a teacher, working with children of all ages with diverse backgrounds and special needs. Now in semi-retirement, Burrell continues to educate groups about social issues impacting children and write novels, many of which are inspired by actual cases.
She has written 22 mystery novels: 17 in The Advocate Series, 4 in the Tuper Mystery Series, and one standalone, co-authored with LJ Sellers.
Children missing from foster care in two different cases, and an emerging pattern of alleged satanic rituals form the backdrop to this mystery - somewhat slow moving at the beginning
The Advocate's Conviction by Teresa Burrell is a free book I downloaded through Amazon. Sabre (Sobs) is a child advocate attorney. Works well with Bob another attorney. She uses a private investigator J. D. This case surrounds missing and exploited children. Bailey a teenage female delinquents ran away from her foster home. When her mother came to court she had drugs on her possession. Then there was the Johnson tribe. It seemed as it the social worker deliberately broke up the family. The mom was dirt poor. The social worker said the mom was into satanic rituals because all the found in the house was chicken feet and goats blood. Cole the oldest ran away from the foster home. He's only 10. Upon investigation it is learner that the chicken farm owner gave her the chicken feet and the chicken innards, kidneys, heart and liver. Read on to see how Sabre finds the missing kids, unites a family and has the bad guys arrested.
Book 3 in the Sabre Orin Brown Series - The Conviction grabs you at the prologue. The book builds at a perfect pace. In a small town it seems easy to connect things - but you have to wonder are they connected ? Is there a satanic cult at work here? Sabre enlists two dear friends to help her locate clients that have gone missing because as an attorney you are on a time table and Sabre wants to do what is best for her clients. Secrets, kidnapping, murder and drug use will keep this story moving. Sabre will get herself into trouble like books before but she needs to do the right thing. I look forward to seeing how this series plays out. So far they could be read as standalones but you appreciate the character growth as a reader when enjoying them in order.
The Advocate's Conviction is book three in 'The Advocate Series'. I've had the pleasure of reading books one and two. Sabre Orin Brown is a child advocate attorney, working in the Children's Courts. When two children, Cole Johnson who's eight and Bailey Lecy who's fourteen go missing from foster care, Sabre asks for help from JP her private investigator friend and Bob her best friend as well as an attorney. Even though there is a link to suspected satanic rituals, Sabre knows that they must do all they can to protect the children and make sure they are safe, she knows there is something deeper going on. Will they find the children before it's to late? Teresa Burrell can catch your attention and keep it, with interesting plots and characters
In this third book in the series child advocate Shea deals with a potential devil ritual involving minors. What I love about Shea is how well she connects with the kids she is working with. She truly has their best interests at heart. Bailey is her charge in this book and she gains Bailey’s trust by not forcing her to go back to her foster home but doing everything she can to protect her. I love this series and can’t wait to read more!
I was very disappointed in this work by Ms. Burrell after devouring the first 2 in the series...if the first 2 were like stories that were so good, so intriguing that they played on the movie screen in my mind...the characters were so well-written and alive, I could see them and hear them and feel them along with the story. And talk about not wanting it to end? not only did I not want it to end - or should I say, I wanted to find out who did it, but I was so immersed in the story I wasn't thinking about that a, I was just thinking about "WHAT NEXT?"??? The pages of the book (or my tablet, as it were, lol) just turned themselves as a means to an end so that I could get to the next important part if information or what was going to happen next...because SOMETHING WAS DEFINITELY GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT!! It always did, and it was ALWAYS A SHOCKER!! Never did you see those twists and turns coming...
And then we get to this book!! OMG!! Idk if Ms. Burrell needed time to regroup from the last 2 stories? or if the rest of the books are going the be more like this one rather than the first 2 - WHICH ONE WAS A FLUKE??? PLEASE OH PLEASE LET IT BE THIS ONE!!!! We spend the WHOLE BOOK running around looking for missing children who ran away from their foster homes!! There is so much confusing back and forth btw NAMES that Ms. Burrell actually had me have to have a list beside me so I could keep up with who belonged to whom. There was NO SUSPENSE, NO INTRIGUE...there was this whole subterfuge going on about satanic cults, but everybody knows that where there are satanic cults involved, there's usually something more nefarious going on, you just need to get to the bottom of it!! And Ms. Burrell has a bad habit of starting her next books out like we should know what she's talking about, i.e., in this one, she talks about Ron being gone, but she never explains what happened to him in this book. However, she goes into GREAT DETAIL about the stupid red notebook that he gave her and what it's for.
Seeing as how these stories never build on one another...IMHO, if you can get by with skipping by without reading this installment in the series - and if you're not overly anal and don't need to do something just so it's done just for the sake of doing it, lol - I would recommend SKIP IT AND MOVE ON TO NUMBER 4...SURELY we'll be back to INTRIGUE and MAYHEM again. Thanks for letting me vent 😣
I have to admit, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. In the first printing of The Advocate's Conviction, the description included phrases like, "a hotbed of Satanic ritual...pointing to the occult". Definitely NOT my typical read. But I'm so invested in The Advocate series, I had to read this one.
Satanic activity is mentioned very little in the book. What is involved is a lot of twists and turns. In The Advocate's Conviction, things are not always as they appear. In this installment of the series, you never know who you can actually trust and believe. In this book, you will come face to face with secrets, kidnapping and murder. As always, you will be surprised in the end.
The Advocate's Conviction centers around two children who disappear, eight-year-old Cole Johnson and fourteen-year-old Bailey Lecy. Cole and his four siblings, ages eight to one and a half, are taken away from their single mother due to issues related to truancy and goat blood and chicken feet being found in their home. Bailey got the attention of social services because she ran away from home several times and also had truancy issues. Her social worker also suspected drug use. As with all of her clients, as seen in the previous Advocate books, Sabre will stop at nothing to find out the truth and keep her clients safe, even if it means risking her own life.
I don't want to give away too much information. I will say that I was so engrossed in this book. I could NOT put it down. I love Sabre because she's caring and has a really good heart. I get frustrated with her for probably the same reasons. It NEVER fails.....Sabre always manages to get herself into trouble, mostly because she refuses to listen to a certain someone. If only there was some way for JP to handcuff himself to Sabre, she probably wouldn't get into so much trouble.
I truly believe that reading this book is worthwhile. You will NOT be disappointed. The Advocate's Conviction is the third book in the Advocate series, however, I feel that it is a stand alone book. Of the three books, this one is probably my second favorite, following the first one.
I was able to do this review from my personal purchase of The Advocate's Conviction.
Sabre Orin Brown is an attorney who serves as an advocate for clients in the juvenile system. When two of Sabre's clients disappear from foster care, it appears that Satanic followers may be involved. However, Sabre is not convinced that is the case. Racing against time to ensure their safety, Sabre and her private investigator friend JP, and her best friend Bob (also an attorney) team up to find the kids before it is too late. Sabre really cares for her young clients, and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect them, even with personal risk.
She reminds me of a younger Kinsey Millhone, from Sue Grafton's alphabet series, though Sabre is not as jaded as Kinsey. There are a lot of twists and turns in the story, the characters are well-developed, and the action is fast-paced.
This is the third book in the Teresa Burrell's Advocate series. The story is independent of the first two books, though the characters are the same. I won this book from Librarything and really enjoyed reading it. I now look forward to reading other books by Teresa Burrell.
I loved this as much as the other two. The characters are maturing and you are getting to know them better. A lot less back story in this book - but that is ok. You can read it as a stand alone but much better to follow the series order.
Ms Burrell's experience with the child advocate system brings such credibility to her story line. I love the relationship between Bob and Sabre. Good friends that help each other without being cheesy. The subject can be a little disturbing. These are kids in untenable situations, but handled very well.
My only small, teeny criticism - JP's Texas euphemisms were a little thick. There was not a lot of interaction between Sabre and JP but it does not detract from the story at all. Just a personal preference. I am very much looking forward to the next one. I would highly recommend this, and have, to my friends. A good read. You will enjoy.
This is my first Teresa Burrell book and it won't be my last. From the very first page I was hooked. I love Sabre, Bob, and JP. and their easy banter. Being a born and raised Texan I especially loved the JP-isms, have used some them in the past and will use some of them in the future. The story had some twist and turns that I didn't see coming and I really like that in a book. I also like that there isn't a lot of legal talk that you usually find in legal thrillers. Reminded me of the William Bernhardt Justice series before he went political. I have found a new favorite author to add to my list and plan on getting the first two books in the series. I won this from LibraryThing Member Giveaway and I highly recommend this book.
Sabre and Bob are back in action. We have missing babies, teenage runaways, over zealous social workers, and hints of witchcraft. It's up to Sobs and Bob to represent their clients and figure out exactly what is happening. Their private investigator is there to help. Well written, fast paced, with characters so well defined that the reader feels like they are friends. The book has it's comic moments and yet still speaks to the damages drugs are doing to our children without being “preachy”. Another winner from this author. I enjoyed it, read it more than once to be honest and would highly recommend it.
Another fun read for me from this author! I was able to polish it off in a day of relaxing while on vacation- so easy fun read!
Again, what I liked about her style, continued in this 3rd book, as a pleasant surprised, what pet peeved me a little in book 1, (the timeline) improved in book 2, and was crystal clear in 3!
She is s a great story teller - the legal story /case the writer tells change up from book to bool, as well as the mystery which is why I am continuing on to her next book!
The issues that are dealt in this book are harrowing but necessary for discussion. In many counties, woman who give birth don't have any rights, the just take the babies after birth and sell them on the black market. Even here in the U.S., we have trafficking of stolen babies as well. This is an awful crime and much devastation to the parents of the babies. I'm glad that this book was about this subject, because it happens in our society much more than people think.
The Advocate's Conviction by Teresa Burrell is the 3rd book in The Advocate Mystery series. Children's advocate Sabre Brown's clients go missing from foster care with the two cases being linked to suspected satanic rituals. A rather slow start but picked up as it progressed. I love that we get to see more of J.P., Sabre's private investigator, in this book. He seems to be a more stable influence on Sabre's impulsive actions, although she disregards his advice a lot of the time. An interesting and captivating mystery.
All of these books are so very compelling that I could not stop reading. I would think of the story and plot when I did not have the time to read. I could hardly wait to get back to the story. I would recommend the series to anyone.
The plots are very compelling. They keep the reader involved and trying to solve the mystery at every turn. I would be glad to read anything Teresa writes.
I just love this author and series. The stories are so engaging and the characters are so realistic that you simply get sucked in right away. This book is no different. I was hooked from the very first page. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series to anyone who likes mysteries. You will not be disappointed.
Still going strong. Even in the third book of the series the twists still drag you in. The author never leaves a lag in the story and keeps you turning the pages. This series has been easy to read and very enjoyable. Even with her vast knowledge of the legal system she has an easy flow to her writing that is captivating.
Excellent!! The words just flowed. The story pulled you in, you felt with the characters. The story was so engrossing that when my daughter spoke to me I jumped. It took a minute for me to come back to the real world. The characters were well fleshed out you wanted to be involved.
Ms. Burrell, continues to keep our interest with main characters doing their best to advocate for their clients and solve mysteries too ... Wanna see JP and Sabre get together, even if he thinks he's too old ....!
Another awesome Sabre story. This time the kids are disappearing and they're also involved in a huge mystery together. This is another can't put down book.
I knew within the first few pages of this book that it was written by an attorney who does CPS appointments. In the area the book is set in, San Diego County, CA, what I would call CPS law they call juvenile law, which caused a few minutes of confusion for me. Here ‘juvenile law’ is criminal law involving minors (what they called delinquency law), and what they called dependency law or juvenile law is what I’d call CPS.
But the difference of a few terms and procedural variations aside, this is the clearest picture of the heart-breaking, bizarre, migraine-causing, weeping with joy and with anger, world that is CPS law. Because it’s highly specialized, there tend to be only a few lawyers in any given county that handle it regularly (and competently), and we often spend ridiculous amounts of time with each other. The way the author’s characters talked to each other, the interrelationships, the frustration with stupid judges and uncaring caseworkers, siding which each other on one case and against each other in another.... this is the heartbeat of our day-to-day.
It’s hard to describe the joy I felt reading this and feeling the connection, across states and jurisdictions, with these lawyers that I could imagine myself having lunch with. There was one moment where Sabre is looking at new cases, and she pulls a petition that includes allegations that of an infant shaken so badly that it has permanent brain damage. With a sigh, she puts it back— “nothing out of the ordinary.” That might seem callous to some readers, but in reality, that is nothing out of the ordinary. Drugs, mental health issues, mental health issues being self-medicated by drugs, babies born addicted, brain injuries...it’s not that we don’t care, it’s just that we see it every day, and so it doesn’t stand out as an unusual case.
If you’ve just read the description of the book and you’re thinking that ‘alleged Satanic rituals’ is not your thing, don’t be concerned; looking into case allegations of cult and ritual behavior is part of the plot, but it’s on the investigative side rather than the graphic, horror side. And yes, I have absolutely seen cases where the parties involved had to check out cult allegations, so this is not as far-fetched as it may sound like.
Also, the final plot twist, revealing that was covering for , and that , made me sigh and go, “Yeah, could happen.” It’s obviously not what I would call a frequent occurrence, but it also wouldn’t give me a heart attack from shock if it I found it was happening in my county.
And if there’s anyone out there reading this who thinks this couldn’t possibly happen where they live, let me just tell you....you’ve never sat through a CPS docket, and you have no idea what gets done to children in even the ‘safest’ and ‘normal’ of places.
I will be buying this for all of my CPS attorney friends, and reading the rest of the series. There are lots of lawyer shows and books, most of which have only a passing resemblance to the world I see every day. This one is the real deal, and that needs to be supported wherever you can find it.
" [...] I’m here to help you, but I need to know your side of this story. There’s always more than one side to a story. [...]”
I am delighted with the dedication of Teresa Burrell's book titled "The Advocate's Conviction". Thank you very much for it. The prologue is very shocking, terrifying and shocking. My tears just flowed. I met Sabre's attorney Orin Brown for the second time. I was very curious what juvenile cases she would handle this time. After the prologue, I knew it was going to be thick, powerful and terrifying. And that's what I love about good books. I don't know if you remember, but this lawyer deals with cases for minors. She's got her hands full. Her nickname is Sobs. Initially, only her friend Bob called her that. Later, others also came. Does she like it? This time she will handle two very difficult cases that will leave a lasting impression on her psyche. Will it be possible to bring both cases to a happy ending? How about a sect that conducts satanic rituals and worships the devil? Does that sound scary? And let me tell you, this is just the beginning. The case of the Johnson siblings shocked me deeply. I couldn't recover from it. I kept my fingers crossed for the lawyer that she would defend all five of them well. What will happen when the oldest 8-year-old boy runs away from his foster family? Will Sabre, Ben and JP find the boy before it's too late? The second, even more difficult story will be the case of 14-year-old Bailey Lecy. It's safe to say that this often happens when teenagers become moms and have no interest in their own children. It's very sad. Thanks to Teresa Burrell, we can see with our own eyes what drugs can do. I can honestly tell you that it's not worth wasting your life over them. Life is beautiful without drugs. I read "The Advocate's Conviction" with bated breath. I didn't know it would absorb me so much. I read this novel in one day. It was worth reading it. The author writes so interestingly that I want to read more of her novels. This was my second encounter with Teresa Burrell's work, and I already know that there will be another one soon. If you like strong psychological thrillers, you've come to the right place. There are plenty of twists and turns, adrenaline pumping through your veins and interesting emotions. The last scene was very moving for me. Fast-paced action, original plot and interesting characters make this story not so easy to forget.
Here is my review for The Advocates Conviction by Teresa Burrell
I absolutely loved reading this book right from the start. I love the character Sabre Orin Brown and I like what she does. Also, all that she stands for and what she tries to do for the cases she looks after. She is a very strong character and she gets on well with her sidekick Bob, who works with her a lot. In this story, she finds some of her young charges are running away from the children’s home but when they try to find them, they have no luck. One is only eight years old called Cole, he is one of five children taken away from his mum and they haven’t heard about him for a couple of days and he has been missing for a week. Bailey is another runaway who was with her boyfriend but then her mum’s boyfriend got killed and they are in the frame for the murder. The cops then arrested her boyfriend, so Bailey rang Sabre to ask for help for Apollo but wouldn’t give up where she was. She is too young to be on the streets on her own. JP is trying to find both of them for Sobs but without much luck but there’s some sort of cult thing going on too that they are investigating. This is just a fantastic read. The author has pulled out all the stops with this book and the story is ace. I’m just loving this series. The plotting is brilliant and the writing is superb. I’m now looking forward to the next book.

This is Book 3 of the Advocate Series, and I have been fortunate to have read the previous 2 books in this series.
Oh... my... GOODNESS... what a BOOK!
In this book, we follow Sabre and JP as they once again investigate strange goings on and save some children at risk!
As we are on Book 3 now, I am very familiar with the characters and their backgrounds, and my love for main characters are still great as ever.
Sabre is incredibly loyal and determined. She is definitely an attorney you want on your side as she moves heaven and Earth to fight your corner.
Bob... I just love Bob. Bob is hilarious and a proper goofball. He's the light humour amongst the darkness of the reality of the children in the book.
And of course, JP... with his little Texas sayings , he always has me snorting with laughter, and while he will move heaven and Earth for his clients, we all know he has a major protective soft spot for Sabre.
The one thing that I love about Teresa's work is all the actual legal things that go on. As the reader, you spend a lot of time with Sabre in the inner workings of the US judicial system.
As someone who was interested in studying Criminology one upon a time, I absolutely love this side of the book!
It's also fantastic that this is Teresa's domain, so you know that what she is writing about courts, etc, will be very accurate.
If you love thrillers with a good dollop of crime, then this is for you, I have absolutely loved every single on Terea's books so far, and if I'm honest... they just keep getting better and better!
( Format : Audiobook ) "Drawing pictures of unicorns."
Rumours of Satanical practices seem to be dominating news headlines and children from families in which dark ritual was suspected were increasingly being brought before the juvenile court. Two such cases were being investigated by attorney Sabre Brown and her colleague and friend, Bob.... But the evidence for the cases seemed very flimsy. The two of the children taken into care vanish: one a gutsy 14y years old girl, the other an unrelated boy, a boy, aged only 8, separated not only from his mother but also his four siblings. There were fears he might be dead when he was still unfounded after a full week had passed.
This is an intriguing tale, well characterised for the most part, and somewhat sad. It could have been ugly but the author chose to avoid her readers being forced to confront some potentially ugly scenes, instead relying on character bearsay as it was written in first person format.
Narrated by Laurel Schroeder, the performance is a good one with Ms.Schroeder becoming the perplexed and harassed children's advocate with both fear and feeling. Only the downturn of her voice at he end of her sentences made for a slightly depressing reading.
My thanks to the rights holder of this book for freely gifting me a complimentary copy of The Advocate's Conviction at My request. A recommended read.
Sabre Orin Brown is a Child Advocate Attorney, working with the courts. She has a lot going on, but in this story, the third in the series, we concentrate on two particular families.
Bailey is 14 years old and her home life is a nightmare. Her mother Karen is constantly high on some drug or other, while her mother’s boyfriend Scott is a total scumbag, who supplies her. Bailey is removed from the family home and sent to stay with a foster family. Cole is the eldest of the five Johnson children, but when their mother finds herself with problems, the children are split up and put into care.
Sabre’s problems begin when both Bailey and Cole run away, particularly Cole as he is only eight years old. He could be in serious danger.
Sabre has two colleagues to help her find the children – Bob who is also a Child Advocate Attorney and JP Torn, a Texan ex-police officer turned private investigator. JP is by far my favourite character with his ‘sayings’ and his stetson, because people are more likely to trust a cowboy.
But the issues with the missing children are just the tip of the iceberg, because something far more sinister is going on. The so-called ‘Devil House’ has been all over the news, complete with a pentagram drawn in blood and various other indications of satanism. But are Bailey and Cole somehow involved? Or is this just mass hysteria, whipped up by the media?
This is a very fast-paced book, which can easily be read as a standalone, with three likeable main protagonists and plenty of intrigue and suspense. I really enjoyed it.
Many thanks to @lovebookstours for inviting me to be part of the #TheAdvocatesConviction #BlogTour.
