Os charlatães que percorriam o Oeste e viviam à custa da credulidade e ignorância dos habitantes inspiraram as duas histórias deste álbum, Lucky Luke e o Doutor Doxey e Caça ao Homem. Doxey explora sem escrúpulos as povoações por onde passa vendendo elixires para todos os males e necessidades. Para dar maior credibilidade ao efeito das suas poções recorre a um comparsa que faz demonstrações espectaculares. Tudo corre bem até ao dia em que o seu caminho se cruza com o de Lucky Luke. Doxey é preso, mas consegue evadir-se para continuar a enganar toda a gente. Lucky Luke não desanima e inicia uma perseguição tenaz que só termina quando encontra e detem o charlatão depois de o vencer num duelo final.

About the author

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Álbum que data dos primórdios das aventuras de Lucky Luke, "O Elixir do Doutor Doxey" é uma pequena curiosidade, com relativa graça, que mostra como as melhores histórias da personagem foram feitas com outros argumentistas (e principalmente com Goscinny).

Doxey is a distinctive villain, but I feel that his delusions of helping mankind come across a bit too over-the-top and absurd when put next to his actions. Could have toned that down a bit.

Album Lucky Luke: Eliksir doktora Doxeya składa się z dwóch historii, których wspólnym mianownikiem jest tytułowy doktorek. Człowiek, którego trudno nazwać prawdziwym lekarzem, który z powołania i dobroci serca chce pomagać innym. Jest to bowiem najzwyklejszy szarlatan, dla którego liczą się tylko dolary i nic więcej. Przemierza on bezkres Dzikiego Zachodu, szukając potrzebujących i trochę naiwnych ludzi, którym sprzedaje swoje panaceum „na wszystko”. Ten niecny proceder kiedyś musi się jednak skończyć, szczególnie kiedy jego tropem podąża Samotny Jeździec Sprawiedliwości. Zawarte w albumie historie pochodzą z początkowego okresu serii. Jest to bardzo mocno zauważalne zarówno w konstrukcji samej historii, jak i oprawie graficznej.

Scenariusz jest dosyć liniowy i przewidywalny, ma on jednak kilka ciekawszych dynamiczniejszych momentów. Morris kolejne strony swojego dzieła wypełnia również całą masą gagów. Humor jest dość przyjemny, daleko mu jednak do bardziej wyrafinowanych żartów z późniejszych tomów (które często miały głębsze znaczenie). Największym problemem komiksu jest jednak stosunkowo zbyt mało wyrazisty główny bohater (Lucky Luke). Pierwsze skrzypce odgrywa tutaj Doxey (będący bardzo stereotypowym złym charakterem), często zbyt mocno jak na mój gust spychając dzielnego kowboja na dalszy plan. Sytuacja troszkę poprawia się w drugiej historii, ale nadal nie jest to ten sam rewolwerowiec, którego znamy z późniejszych albumów.....

Im Wilden Westen triebt der Quacksalber Doc Doxey sein Unwesen mit seinen Medizin und Impfungen. Er nützt die Leichtgläubigkeit der Leute aus und hält sich auch selbst für einen Wohltäter. Als er Lucky Luke auch noch Jolly Jumper "klaut" verfolgt der Lonesame Cowboy seine Spur. Der Doc hält sich clever, doch LL ist cleverer und stellt ihm und seinem Handlanger Scraggy eine Falle. In der zweiten Geschichte bricht DD aus und agiert alleine aber noch skupelloser, in dem er eine Masernepidemie vortäuscht und gleich die Impfung anbietet. Zwischenrein braut er immer wieder etwas zusammen. LL ist ihm auf der Spur um ihn wieder ins Gefängnis zu bringen. Dabei zeigt er nicht nur seine Schießkünste sondern auch seine Cleverness, etwa wenn er falsche Spuren erkennt.
Die beiden Geschichten, geschrieben schon 1955 strotzen nur so vor komischen Einfällen, wie etwa einem betrunkenen Pferd und einem Städtschen, in dem alle eine Siesta machen, und daher nicht die Zielgruppe für Doxeys Schlaftrunk sind. Der Stil ist noch sehr cartoonistisch, das Erzählen mit Bildern wirkt recht unbekümmert, gleichzeitig erkennt man dahinter eine profundes Wissen über den Wilden Westen.

As it is common the last few reviews, I found a rater old story.
And it is a fairly basic one. A very classic well known western stereotype causes trouble based on his stereotype.
But I have to admit, for how early this story is, it does express its charakter based humor quiet well.
Previouse books struggled whit that, here the jokes are stricktly written around the personality, and proffession of Dr. Doxey.
That said Doxey feels inconsistent. On one occation he refuses to rise prices because its disshonorable, yet he clearly knows his potion is shit, and he later sells his own medal from the medical faculty whitout regrett. So what is it, what drives him?

Well in the first part of the story, it seemns as if hes driven by ego, he wants to swindel himselfe into the role of a historic person, a hero of medical science. In the second part hes written slightly different, beeing more directly interested in money.

Its not the worst, but there are dozends of better storys.

Sebenarnya ini bisa jadi komik yang bagus. Saya tidak tahu, tapi sepertinya jika dilihat dari gaya menggambarnya komik ini mungkin komik awal Lucky Luke yang dibuat oleh Morris. Sosok Luke masih jauh dari penggambaran yang "biasanya" saya temukan, bahkan sepertinya gambar ini sebelum Lucky Luke berdagu "bulat". Lucky Luke di sini masih terlalu "riil". Rokok lintingan yang biasanya bertengger di mulutnya pun belum ada. Jolly Jumper pun belum cerdas dan bisa ngomong.

Yang paling terasa "mengganggu" adalah gaya penceritaan dan adegan-adegan komik yang terlampau slapstik, mirip dengan gaya kartun Looney Tune dan semacamnya. Tapi selain itu, sebenarnya komik ini potensial. Salah satunya justru karena tokoh antagonisnya, si tukang obat, berkarakter kuat.

(PT) Os elixires do Dr. Doxey prometem curar todas as maleitas do ser humano, mas no final, era uma xaropada propagada por um charlatão a praticar medicina. Lucky Luke apanhou-o em ação e elabora uma perseguição implacável, antes que faça mal a muitos outros.

"O Elixir do Doutor Doxey" é um dos Lucky Luke iniciais, desenhados por Morris. É uma aventura engraçada, dividida por duas partes, e apesar de ser uma velha história do Oeste, com as aventuras do nosso cowboy solitário, não tem a ver com os álbuns posteriores, mais maduros e estruturados. Aqui, é uma mera perseguição contra uma das pragas do Oeste, do mesmo nível dos ladrões de gado. Mesmo assim, tem a sua graça.

Classic Lucky tales are quite the best ones TBH. This one is among them.

Following a fraud who ventures into towns creating fake diseases and selling fake medicines, who ends up meeting Lucky and being consistently pursued by him.
The story is quite good, the narrative sequences pretty well-done, but what tops the list is the comedy in the panels and artwork, the kind of ones that you need to look again and then let out a laugh.
Apart from the classic artwork, this is certainly one of the good Lucky albums.

'Dr. Doxey's Elixir' is net als de twee voorgaande albums een dubbelavontuur. Het is een niet bijzonder geïnspireerd album. Hoogtepunten vormen het slaperige dorp en het dronken paard.

Géronimo et ses Apaches...
...hätten nicht so viel Unheil anrichten können wie der skrupellose und völlig von Unrechtsbewusstsein befreite Docteur Doxey (oder Dr Oxyde, wie er sich später tarnt). Schlangenölhändler ist bis heute ein Begriff für Scharlatane jeder Façon, und vom Schlangenöl, abgefüllt in schicke Flaschen mit je nach Situation austauschbarem Etikett, hat Dr Doxey immer genug in petto (im Notfall mischt er sich halt neues aus dem Badewasser seines Sidekicks). Da sich die gutgläubigen Dörfler des Wilden Westens nur allzuleicht reinlegen lassen, braucht es einen Aufrechten, der sich nicht von den scheinbaren Wundertaten des Doktors ablenken lässt...

Die Idee, einen Band um einen Gegener Lucky Lukes aufzubauen, sah man schon mit Pat Poker und den "alten" Daltons in den Vorgängerbänden. Auch hier sind die Geschichten des Bands ähnlich strukturiert - die Trennung in Einzelgeschichten ist recht willkürlich, denn auch in sich sind die Stories sehr episodisch und hangeln sich von Gag zu Gag.

Auch wenn das Plotting noch deutlich zu wünschen übrig lässt: Die Reihe ist einfach liebenswert in ihrer karikaturhaften Darstellung eines Wilden Westens, wie es ihn wohl nie gegeben hat.

Nouvelle figure typique du western : le charlatan. Le personnage du docteur Doxey tranche avec les opposants traditionnels de Luke. Pas d'hommes de main, ce n'est pas un as de la gâchette, et pourtant, c'est un opposant redoutable car déterminé, retors et profondément veule (ce qui le rend dangereux)

Un très bon épisode.
