Along with "Divided by Faith" by Emerson and Smith, this book belongs to those that have radically shifted my perspective on the efficacy of American religion. Filled with stories and quotations from the four gospels, the book presents a powerful argument that the Christ's demand to "pick up your cross" is fundamentally one that undermines our allegiance to the state. The authors are in a unique place to make their extreme argument because they have each practiced what they preach and ultimately been condemned by our society to a life behind bars for their bold action against state-sanctioned violence. This book is a powerful witness to the transformative power of the cross.
