Rate this book
Forced to dominate his professional life, Dr. Ryan Barrow has always wanted to be a sub. Late one night, Ryan flies out with the Air Care team to save wounded officer Trent Lakeland. As the night fades away, Ryan feels heartbroken at the possibility of never seeing Trent again.

Trent is a Dom that will no longer be able to hear the words of any sub he takes. He can’t believe that a head injury has left him deaf and suddenly feeling alone. Things change when Trent is put in charge of training Ryan for his new position as a SWAT doctor.

Ryan is lovesick for Trent and secretly wants him as his Dom. As they both fight the undercurrent of passion, Ryan knows there is no way they can be together. Trent proves him wrong when he starts Ryan’s submissive training.

Ryan has given Trent his body to dominate, but can he give him his heart, too?

This book started out very well. The first half was great, with pretty MC Trent being a great Alpha male Dom who was handling his new status as a deaf SWAT police officer and K9 handler quite well. He meets up with the ER doctor, MC Ryan, who saved him when he was shot on duty, the injury the caused his deafness. Sparks fly and they begin a D/s relationship. But during the second half, things just got really weird and went downhill very, very quickly. It felt like a different person wrote the second half of the book. One minute the dialogue in Ryan's head is, "I can't do this relationship." And in the next breath it's, "I can't live without him, I hope he asks me to move in." Huh? The author jumped all over the place with these two. I just didn't buy it and it was completely wishy-washy and poorly done.

I can't recommend this one. It felt sloppy and thrown together at the end. It's too bad, because I really enjoyed the characters and the subject matter. If a little more time, attention and care were put into the last half of the book, it could have been great.

As with the first book, I need to preface my review with a warning: if you're looking for real BDSM and a developing Dom/sub relationship in the traditional sense, you will be disappointed. Even though both characters keep talking about Ryan's "sub training", no such thing was happening. Yes, they have a series of hot and very kinky encounters, but their emotions were flat and they both seemed unengaged in their activities beyond the physical. It felt to me as if they were going through the motions, and I definitely didn't like Trent's tone as he ordered Ryan around. There was no trace of respect or discussion of limits and safewords.

Having said that, the "real story" as I see it is about both Trent and Ryan learning to live with physical restrictions. And while that wasn't explicit in Ryan's case (at least not at first), his struggle is just as real as Trent learning to deal with being deaf. By the way, Trent has far fewer issues than I expected, and I had a feeling his real emotions were much deeper than we got to see. Which is too bad. But what happened at work, as they got involved in different cases and situations was interesting and I liked the way Trent dealt with suggestions as to what he should do now that he is deaf, versus what he wanted to do.

If you like stories about tough men, if you enjoy reading about guys battling themselves and their priorities as well as each other, and if you're looking for a hot read with frequent kinky interludes, then you will probably like this novella.

Quick read. No real BDSM. An ok read. No real thought process needed to read the book.

Ryan no longer recognized the man he was becoming. Love must change a person for the better, Ryan decided.

I found this book to be an interesting read. Let me tell you first what I liked about it. Both the Dom and the sub were strong men in their own rights, and were doing fine without each other. Together they made a couple, but they didn’t complete each other, as sometimes occurs in BDSM stories. The BDSM is what I would describe as light to medium: lots of use of toys, demands of obedience, some punishment, lots and lots of sex. The sex is very satisfying for both men and doesn’t take over the story, but amplifies the relationship the men are building very well.

What I didn’t care for… Trent is a cop who is injured in the line of duty and loses his hearing. And that’s pretty much the end of the story about a deaf Dom. He learns to read lips and use sign language proficiently almost immediately. Let me tell you from experience, it just doesn’t happen that way, especially with a grown man who has had normal hearing all his life. It would take years for him to master lip reading, if he ever does, and a tremendous amount of practice and training to master sign language and all of its nuances. None of this was in evidence in this story. The dialog is oddly stilted at times but flows smoothly at other times. This may be the author’s effort to demonstrate the difficulties of a hearing impaired person communicating, but it doesn’t quite get there. A for effort, though.

Ryan carries a deep secret that he feels keeps him from getting close to Trent. This secret, when revealed just fell kind of flat. Yes, it was a scary thing, but not the kind of secret that would bring about all this drama.

Based on the blurb, this just wasn’t the story that was promised. I’m sorry to say I was disappointed, but there was enough quality in the writing to make me want to continue to read Tatum Throne’s books.

4.5 Kisses

Training Ryan is the second book in the Hard Hits series and believe me, this series continues to be an addictive one to read! Ms. Throne does an excellent job at writing compelling, interesting characters along with a strong plot.

The blurb does an excellent job at describing the story so I won’t rehash it. I will say I loved the intense emotional and physical connection Trent and Ryan have for one another. I liked how well they fit together and they really had me hooked on their story from the first page to the last word.

I liked how Trent really learned how to deal with becoming deaf. He proved to be a strong character that I came to admire. I also liked Ryan’s zest for life and thought these two men were great together. The BDSM factor in the book wasn’t over the top, so those readers who are not fans of this type of genre should give this series a try. Instead, I thought it really enhanced the heroes relationship and really brought an interesting element to the story.

I’m officially hooked on this series! I can’t wait until the next book in the series is released and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

As much as I wanted to give this book a five I couldnt. The plot was awesome! Trent is a police ifficer who goes deaf in an accident at work. Ryan is a successful doctor who craves becoming a sub. Tent feels he is the Dom to do that and as much as Ryan craves it he goes for it. ..then pulls back. This people is where the star is lost. Why does Ryan all of a sudden pull away from trent? Well if I gave his reason it woukd be a spoiler so I wont but lets just say it was something that had had prior knowledge of so the sudden fear was slightly unwarranted.
But other than the mysterious freak out Ryan experienced the book was wonderful:-) a greatsecond installment of a great BDSM series.
Also, even though Trents deafness was not a main issue it was handeled well. I LOVE books with deaf characters!

Ryan is a doctor who is also a recovered cancer patient and a strong desire to be a sub. Trent is a K-9 and SWAT officer who loses his hearing on the job. Ryan is the doctor who accompanied Trent to the hospital when he was injured and is sure he knew him from somewhere. The mystery is solved when he goes to the hot doctors' calendar shoot and sees Trent there. Their attraction is each other is strong but they don't act on it until Ryan goes for training to be a SWAT doctor and his trainer is Trent. They are perfect for each other as Trent is a Dom who doesn't mind training Ryan to be his sub while chasing him when he tries to withdraw. After both Trent and Ryan have close calls on the job, Ryan accepts Trent's offer to move in. They had already declared that they loved each and Ryan gets the good news that he still cancer free.

I saw this, I grabbed it thinking I'd've been drawn in like book one. No way. It was, like Randy Jackson would say, "It's a'ght dawg..."
The relationship felt to rushed, I felt the leads had little time to do ANYTHING but have sex... Yes, sex because no love making happened in this book. Which brings me to the other fact. BDSM be damned. I felt so disconnected from the characters. Everything felt forced, almost like a game. Instead of being drawn into the story and feeling the heat of a blossoming relationship, my mind kept crying..." Make it end, please!"
I am obsessive in my reading, so I had to finish it.
I pray the next book is better.
