The Romance Review

Every time I read Ms. Dalton's BDSM themed stories, I remember why I fell in love with her writing. Her writing is what pushed me to delve into the lifestyle through a community rather than just dabble through books and on-line Doms.

In THE DENIM DOM, Tony Daniels finally gets to tell his story. It is so good. Tony is a Dom who is respected in his kinky community. He teaches classes, is a preferred play partner and he is a backup dungeon monitor. What he isn't is a Dom with a submissive or a slave. He's single because he hasn't found his one.

Shayla is a woman whose trust has been stomped on. Her ex-fiancé lied to her and betrayed her badly. His betrayal makes her question her self-worth and the BDSM lifestyle. Completely vanilla, she takes a stroll on the dark side when her job intersects the BDSM scene in Florida. Shayla's job is to write a series of articles on the BDSM scene in Sarasota, Florida. The newspaper she works for knows that sex sells. They want more than just a fluffy look at kinksters. With grave reservations, Shayla takes the assignment and meets up with Tony.

This book is an excellent BDSM Gateway book. Ms. Dalton does an excellent job of showing how a person can first start to learn about BDSM. The reader learns what happens when a person goes to a munch and attends classes. Now, this is a sanitized version. Ms. Dalton hints at the drama lamas and conveniently glosses over them. The BDSM subculture is not immune to human behaviours and flaws. While it is a culture which embodies accepting people for who they are, it still contains judgmental people. Ms. Dalton does a great job of explaining all of this without smashing the reader over the head with a sledgehammer. The education she presents through Tony, et al teaching Shayla is dead on and easy to understand. From a person who had to learn it on my own, the experiences are pretty similar as what is described in this book.

Since this is a Ms. Dalton book, I'm not going to go into the accuracy of the BDSM scenes and D/s presentation. They are accurate and a good baseline. One of my favourite explanations of BDSM is through Loren with her scuba diving analogy for BDSM. Since I'm also a master scuba diver, this explanation made perfect sense to me and I loved it. I may use it in my own life to explain to others. Obviously, Ms. Dalton would receive full credit for this awesome method to explain the BDSM umbrella.

Ms. Dalton's writing style for her contemporary BDSM stories are fabulous. I love how she creates her characters. They are individualistic perhaps because they are inspired by people in her life. She adds her own brand of humour, which I adore. I loved Tony not because I would love to sub for him, but because he is a realistic portrayal of a man with a great sense of humour. There are a couple of thoughts running through Tony's head that made me laugh out loud. It is because I think the same things about people I work with, unbeknownst to them.

Like envisioning an employee strapped into a straightjacket, with a butt plug up their ass, a ball gag in their mouth, and tied to their chair. His own personal form of morale improvement. (p. 21)

Funny enough, this is the same kind of morale improvement I'd like to implement. There are a few others I have which I'd love to discuss with Tony.

Darren naked, hands cuffed behind him, on his knees with a ring gag in his mouth while his fellow department managers used his mouth as a cum dump. (p. 25)

It is reassuring to learn I'm not the only one who thinks about scenes like this. Of course, there would be more anal play involving numerous items. But I digress. This story is a wonderful erotic journey into the kinky world of BDSM. Highly recommended to kinky readers who want a realistic portrayal of how the BDSM subculture exists in real life.

I have to start this by saying - this is the follow on to The Reluctant Dom , but it needs to be seen as its own story, not a continuation of the previous story. The tone of this book is more lighthearted, funny, upbeat and happy. There are some product name references that years from now may date the book, but in no way take anything away from the story. The book integrates a general message of safe, consensual, be aware of the situations you put yourself in, and who you play with, there is an emphasis on the trust between partners. Although it seems like this should be second nature, many of the current wave of BDSM themed books, romanticize the lifestyle, have wealthy heroes, and mentally challenged females all acting like nothing can go wrong, especially if your on the path to love.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, and the fact that our heroine Shayla, entered the BDSM lifestyle with trepidation, and a bit of a preconceived negative feeling towards it due to the situation experienced with her Ex. What started out as a work assignment, and a quest to understand why she was not enough for her Ex, led to her learning that she had room in her life, and needs that could be fulfilled by the lifestyle.

The overall plot had no sleuthing, undercover,or covert mission to infiltrate the lifestyle, all of the parties involved knew this was going to be a series of published magazine articles, with their anonymity preserved, drawing more focus to the lifestyle then the current wave of "trendy" books already had. The story had nothing but supportive characters, there were no petty, jealous, plotting women who wanted to take the gorgeous Tony away for themselves, or ruin Shayla's learning and journey to understanding.

Tony was dominant, had his way of doing things and had no problem stating his word was the final say. What Tony did, he did with heart and conviction, he wanted to be the good guy.

I liked both Tony and Shayla, and it was fun having cameo's from characters from The Reluctant Dom, it helped to build the supportive family and linked the two books. The characters were real, they had jobs and responsibilities. No wealthy millionaire and young inexperienced virgins, just characters that seemed like real everyday people. I actually felt Shayla's loss and insecurity at the end of the eight weeks when Tony UN-collared her, leaving her confused and not knowing how to get the stability and emotional security back, to me this was the saddest part of the story. The path to their HEA seemed short and quick, but it worked - I didn't feel like anyone compromised their position, or changed their ways to get to the HEA, it felt like they were on that path the whole time. I loved the emphasis on the collaring ceremony,Vs a traditional marriage - it's nice to see that alternative lifestyles have values incorporated in them.

I have to commend Tymber, that although sex played an important role in the story(and most of the scenes were HOT) it was not the story. The book had a plot and the sex was just the cherry on top of the sundae

3 The Denim Dom Stars

Don’t take this the wrong way, for me this was just ok.

Nothing really stands out for me, the scenes were hot sure but I didn’t really connect with either of the main characters.
I did wonder why if Shayla was so “new” why she didn’t have any inner dialog during her first sub time.

And at one point was looking to see if it was going to be over.
Now that is not like me with this series. All the ones I have read so far I have loved so I was kind sad I didn’t like this one too.

I enjoyed the narrator, she didn’t stand out or anything but that’s fine.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

4/5; 4 stars; A-

This book was a real winner for me in the Erotica/BDSM genre. I was hesitant in light of my mixed reaction to The Reluctant Dom, a book that most people raved about. However, Tymber Dalton is a good writer and I thought she did a great job of writing a fictional story that sheds a much more positive light on the BDSM lifestyle than some of the other popular books out there currently. Reading this book helped me pinpoint what really bothered me about 50 Shades of Grey. That is, in 50 Shades, the Dom struck me as mentally unstable, right from the beginning and the sub was basically a child. I had to abandon that book partway in.

In The Denim Dom, Tony is portrayed as a mentally healthy person with good communication skills as well as strong ethical standards. Shayla, has a bag of issues but manages to deal with them and comes across as pretty mature as well as confident in her sexuality. Her trauma over her ex seemed a bit overdone but it served to highlight how much help she needed dealing with her unhealthy emotions.

This book had a pretty strong 'educational' component which I thought was nicely balanced by the romance story line. The educational material was there but it didn't come across as preachy. I'd recommend this book to any of my friends who wants a recommendation for BDSM/erotica that is head and shoulders above the previously mentioned book!

I have tried to understand the various aspects of BDSM through the books I've read in the last year or two. While I can relate to the appeal of B/D, and D/s I don't have it in me to get excited by S/M but I think the author still did a great job of showing how it works for some people.

I probably would not have bothered with this book had I known this was going to be about a slave/master relationship.
I enjoyed the beginning when Tony was explaining things to Shayla, there was a cameraderie. Once he agreed to train her as a sub he started to dehumanize her. I hate the term my pet and him snapping his fingers at her, her dropping to her knees, kiss his dirty shoes, kiss the back of his hands and then nuzzle his crotch was asinine. Tony's constant "Who is my good pet?", "Are you my good pet?" "Tell me you are my good pet." The same thing with "Who is my good girl?", etc. He was treating her like she was mentally slow. Also having to address someone as "Sir" takes away from the intimacy of the relationship.

Tony is a sadist and heavily into beatings and humiliation. The first time Tony did a scene with Shayla he used so many different implements on her that I lost count. It seemed unrealistic that Shayla never once used her safeword. She embraced everything he did to her and in the end she did not even question his decisions. It's like she got a lobotomy. I did like that Tony told her that he wanted her to voice her opinions and feel free to disagree with him.
In a way I can see why she did not bother because in the end she gave up her right to have an opinion when she became his posession, his toy, his pet, his slave.

The one smart decision both made is not having children. After all she swore to honor him above anything or anyone else.

I really loved The Reluctant Dom so I really wanted to love this book as well but I just didn't. It's a very well written book, I enjoyed the plot and characters. I however have a hard time getting into books with the Master/slave relationship. I cannot stand the word "pet" as an endearment. The whole "who's my good girl?" sit on a pillow while we eat thing just isn't something I enjoy reading about. People who do enjoy that side of BDSM will enjoy this book.

My Review:
I loved this book from beginning to end. Shayla is on very strong woman. She was hurt badly and BDSM kind of played a part. When she chooses to write some articles about BDSM she wasn't entirely unbiased but her misconceptions fell away quickly. Tony went above and beyond the call of duty to help her understand and feel her way around. He trained her and didn't use her innocence against her. They butted heads a bit and I loved that Tony wasn't put on a pedestal. It made it feel more real to see that the Dom wasn't perfect. He also wasn't the typical leather Dom which I appreciated. The play/sex scenes were extremely sexy and beautifully written. Not to mention extremely hot! I felt the pull that Tony & Shayla had and I cheered them on every step of the way. I experienced a wide variety of emotions while reading this book. I laughed, got mad and even teared up a bit. This book has characters that tie-in from Tymber's The Suncoast Society series. You don't have to read them to love this book but I would recommend it because you are emotionally connected to more of the characters that way. I read them and loved seeing how those other relationships were progressing. I had been waiting for Tony's story for a while and it didn't disappoint. I would highly recommend this book.

The Suncast Society Series:
The Reluctant Dom- Seth & Leah's Story while Tony is a secondary character
Domme by Default- Tony is a secondary character
Cardinal's Rule- Tilly, Landry & Chris's Story
Safe Harbor- Mac, Sully & Clarisse's Story

Shadow‘s review posted on Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

5 Stars

When author Tymber Dalton gets it right, she can rip your soul from your body and put everything back together again.

In The Denim Dom, she gets it right. While it is not quite as emotional as some of her previous efforts, (don’t read The Reluctant Dom without a tissue), you feel for both the heroine and her Dom and really pull for them to have their HEA.

In this wrap up of several of her books, she works hard to explain the attraction of BDSM through the education of a journalist, Shayla. A reporter for an on-line and print magazine, Shayla recently moved to Florida to make a clean break with her former boyfriend, who took out credit cards in her name and ran up bills of over $16,000 for on-line porn, especially hard core BDSM.

When she is assigned to do an article on the local BDSM scene, she isn’t sure she can be objective but wants to try. She finds people in the lifestyle welcoming and more than willing to educate her, as long as their real identities are not revealed. After an overwhelming introduction, she decides the only way to give a true representation is to actually experience the lifestyle. The Dom who accepts her for training, Tony, has been lonely, but is not willing to put up with a lot of drama or clinginess from a sub. This leads to some real misunderstanding between them. Can Shayla overcome her trust issues to form a real link with Tony?

Throughout the book, we are treated to updates on characters from Dalton’s earlier books, including The Reluctant Dom, Domme by Default, Cardinal’s Rule and Safe Harbor. However, you don’t need to have read any of them to appreciate the Denim Dom.

One of the more interesting aspects of Dalton’s book is that she lives the lifestyle. And she gives some compelling reasons why people are drawn to it, although ultimately, as she demonstrates in the book, it takes experiencing it to understand it. The book does contain bondage, impact play and Master/slave relationships.

Overall, this was an excellent read, well-written and fascinating.

Tymber has done it again . I LOVED this book . I LOVED the Reluctant Dom and The Denim Dom has Tony who is a character from the Reluctant Dom . I'm Happy to see Tony get his HEA , he deserved it .

“I'm not a leather kind of Dom when it comes to practicality. He Smiled " I'm much more a demin kind of Dom." Shayla arched her brow at him. " A demin Dom huh?" he nodded . " Better then a sweating-my-ass-off Dom.”

I love how she wrote this one based on the training of a submissive . It Will open your eyes a little bit more into the world of BDSM . It is Hot, It is Dominant. I loved Both Shay and Tony in this story . Shay did not let the things that happened to her get in the way of her story and she went in with a total open mind . Tony Well if you read Reluctant Dom you already know Tony had a heart of gold , he just needed to right person to share that Heart with and He sure found it in Shay .

I will say I LOVED all the characters in this one. I was Happy to see Both Seth and Leah also.

I really enjoyed this book and would have given it a solid 4 stars but toward the end of the book Tony started using the "S" word when he was talking to Shayla and for me that is a total turnoff so I knocked my rating down to 3.75. If she had done this earlier in the book I might not have finished reading. Aside from this minor pet peeve of mine, The Denim Dom was actually a great read. The book gets a 5+ star rating for having some of the smexiest sex "scenes" that I think I have ever read. Total kegel and cold shower inducing...IMO.

So the quick synopsis is that Shayla Pierce has started a new job at a magazine and is assigned to write about the BDSM scene. She manages to meet up with a great group of Doms & Subs and they introduce her to Tony Daniels who teaches at the club and he volunteers to help "train" Shayla so she can wrap her head around the whole concept in an effort to write a fair article on the subject.

They agree to a 2 month training to coincide with the articles she needs to submit for the magazine. Needless to say they grow closer as the assignment draws to its inevitable end.

The chemistry was super hot between Tony & Shayla and it was great to see Leah & Seth from The Reluctant Dom. There were a lot of other great characters from some of Tymber's other books but I have not had the pleasure of reading them yet but they were interesting enough that I may have to go back and have a look.

Ok, so I just finished this, I SO wish it had been the book before The Reluctant Dom Only because it was more an introductory to BDSM and all it entails. I loved The Reluctant Dom and what it taught us, but just felt this was more of a learning book.
It was gentle and sweet, and even funny, and broke us in gently to the world of BDSM.
Tony is a real gentleman, and I kind of felt, although the "Denim Dom" nickname suited him down to the ground, the "Gentleman Dom" would have suited him just as well.
Shayla was obviously submissive from the start, but a strong, woman in her own right. She was only too happy to please Tony from the start, and they just made an awesome couple.
Even though these books are all stand alones, I think its important to at least read The Reluctant Dom before this one, as the couples are all very high profile in this one, and you need the background that book provides to understand what makes things tick in this book.
As usual Tymber Dalton has given us an amazing story, factual in that it is written by someone who knows, lives and understands the lifestyle. It is an easy read, and although there are hot sex scenes, it is not a heavy "drag you down" book. You finish it feeling you have learned something, and enjoyed the journey, unlike some BDSM books I have read recently. great story, by an amazing writer.

Tymber Dalton does it again and just blows me away with The Denim Dom.
When she announced she would be writing Tony’s story from the Reluctant Dom I knew she wouldn’t let us down and would make Tony’s story come to life for us as she has with so many of her other characters. While the Denim Dom is a stand alone book it is nice too see characters from previous books Tymber Dalton has written such as The Reluctant Dom, Safe Harbor and my favorite “Tilly” from Cardinal’s Rule make an appearance.

As always while reading one of Tymber’s books I am completely drawn in by the first few pages and find myself unable to put it down. She masterfully creates a story that is deeply emotional but full of her snarky wit, and of course the notorious Star Trek references here and there. I hope I am not the only one that noticed them.

If you long to ready a sexy romance with a twist that has you all tied up (hint hint) and gives you that happy ever after ending then pick up the Denim Dom and fall in love with the sexy and witty Tony.

Thank you Tymber for providing us books filled with your awesome humor and big heart. It shows in your writing and that is what makes it so amazing.

So disappointed with this book. I LOVED The Reluctant Dom but this felt written by someone else . The relationship moved along so quickly without really getting what the relationship was built on other than BDSM. Shalya did a 180 on BDSM that just didn't seam realistic. Got so tied of "pet" and "good girl" and never understood her attraction to Tony or the lifestyle. That is what I loved about the Reluctant Dom is that "I got it". Maybe just don't get the whole slave attraction. She did a good job of explaining BDSM but just didn't get their relationship at all. The whole thing felt rushed.

3.5. I think tony WAY overreacted in their fight and acted like such an asshole. HE was the one in the wrong, and even though he apologized he was still an asshole by expecting her to accept his apology immediately but he made her beg for her forgiveness. That really changed my opinion of him. And then him not communicating when he was leaving for Dallas. But still a good book. I just wouldn't want to be with him.

Shayla Pierce is a reporter doing research for an article at her new job in the Tampa Bay area, on the BDSM lifestyle. Tony Daniels is a Dom who teaches classes on whips, ropes, and is a DM (dungeon master). He currently has no submissive. They meet through friends that Shayla is interviewing. These friends are characters from previous books; Leyla and Seth from The Reluctant Dom, Mac, Sully and Clarisse from Safe Harbor and Tilly, Landry and Cris from Safe Harbor. These old friends embrace Shayla and show great patience and as she struggles to understand the reasoning and motivation of embracing the DBSM lifestyle.
Shayla was burnt in a previous relationship with her fiancé. He was quite the fan of porn and ran up credit card debt (in her name) in the thousands of dollars. Their break up undermined her self- confidence. She and Tony share a mutual attraction for each other and it’s not long before Shayla asks Tony to teach her and instruct her in the lifestyle she finds she is intrigued by, he complies and sets down some ground rules. She agrees to become his “pet”, his slave and allows him to collar her. Their period for her instruction will last 2 months and when that time is over, they will resume their previous lives.

“How are you feeling, pet? She smiled up at him. “Good, Sir.” “Ready to play?” “Yes, sir.”

Ms. Dalton is a visual writer; her steamy, smexy scenes involve spanking, domination, toys, and bondage. She is active in the BDSM lifestyle, which lends credibility to her writing. She painstaking guides the reader through the often confusing world of BDSM, so the reader never loses site of these characters and how their sexual preferences are but one aspect of their lives. There are some amusing passages but above all, this novel is filled with passion, and sex and enough kink to require a set of kitchen mitts to handle your reading device.
I received a review copy of this novel in exchange for an unbiased critique.

Holy riding crop! The Denim Dom is fan-freaking-tastic. I developed a soft spot for Tony in The Reluctant Dom , so I jumped at the chance to read more about him. There's no disappointment on my face. I'm all smiles.
"Be nice."

"I'm always nice. I'm the sweetest sadist you'll ever meet."
Shayla was plagued with a bastardly douche as a fiancé. All his lies, broken promises, oh yeah, and STEALING, left her broken and in debt. Nice. She's finally starting over far from him. The miles apart, however, cannot fix her trust issues.

Shayla starts an amazing new job that leads her down a road she wasn't expecting. She's faced with an assignment that opens up old wounds. Like most people, she doesn't know a whole lot about the BDSM lifestyle. She's determined to uncover the truth. Who knew she'd find out so much about herself in the process?

Tony, Mr. Delicious Denim Dom (ooh! He can be Mr. 3D!), is way too sexy to be lonely. His friends are constantly trying to set him up and help him find "the one." He just hasn't found the right woman to Dominate. He wants the happiness and contentment his friends have.

Things get entirely interesting and crazy hot when Shayla and Tony begin training. He can call me pet. Wowza.
How can pain feel so damn good, and pleasure feel like pain?
OH! And their greeting! *dies* That is just WOW. *rawr*

I really liked this book. I loved the characters. It was cool having Leah and Seth back. I haven't read the books the other characters are in, but now I want to. Tymber Dalton is awesome. She knows what she's talking about because she lives it. She wraps amazing fiction around sensual facts and it's so much fun to read.

I've loved the character of Tony since his first appearance in The Reluctant Dom, so finally getting his story was wonderful! Tony is a good man who enjoys what he does. He gets the job done at work even if he has to imagine hogtying his co-workers to do it. He enjoys his work with the community he plays a large role in even more. He teaches classes, works with newbies to the lifestyle and now he has agreed to train a reporter who is interested in the reality of the BDSM community and not just what is seen in porn. Shayla finds exactly what she never knew she needed when she ended up working on a story about BDSM for her magazine after making a glib comment in a story meeting one day. The story ends up being very popular and she decides to go into a contract with Tony to see what the appeal is for someone in the role of slave. These two have been through many emotional and relationship roller coasters. They also are looking for less drama in their relationships now and make it clear that their arrangement is temporary. That is until they fall in love with each other but neither wants to burden the other with their change in circumstances so it is left to the girlfriends. It's never a good idea to piss off your significant-others friends, but it really isn't a good idea to do it when the majority of them are either mouthy subs or switches with more of a sadistic streak than yourself. Tony finds this out and makes a quick change in their lives that pleases everyone. While not as emotional as The Reluctant Dom, I still loved seeing more of one of mu favorite characters as well as getting to see a bit more of some other favorites from several other of Tymber Dalton's books.

It's fine.

I kind of hated this book. I started skimming the sex scenes. If you want sex scenes, this is great for you, but I got so bored.

Shay has a personality until she starts getting "trained" and then she turns into a sex object. The one time she flips out at Tony, he pulls the you're being irrational card and walks away. Also it wasn't clear that they'd be in a 24 hr dynamic? They just started making him call him Sir right away. Like poof, her personality goes away. This dude comes with approval from friends, but how do you know he's not a monster? He's the one with more experience, HE should be the one making sure everything is going well and boundaries aren't being overwhelmed. People consent to things in the moment they feel weird about later. But evidently Tony is magic and perfect.

One of the better parts of this book was the dynamic of the women and how they talked to one another. Leah got to be a real character in this book rather than in the former one where she was a catatonic sexy lamp for half the time.

I liked the H - he was very clear and fair in his life choices.
I liked the h.
I liked them together.
I loved The Reluctant Dom. 6 Star Read and I recommend that tale to everyone. This writer can write, *this* story was well written...but...I can't put myself in the H's nor the h's shoes and that leads to an ok reading experience.
Can't grasp the why someone would suddenly say 'yes' to this lifestyle and there was nothing I read in the story that explained that why/h. Which was ironic since the h's quest was to understand why her ex-fiance had a different lifestyle that eventually broke them up (not BDSM at all, his kink was porn - totally different situation) - so a book that started with a question never really answered led me to a question never answered...which may just be there is no answer I suppose.

I just finished the book last night- well- more like early this morning and I LOVED IT!!!! Tymber- you really know how to suck a person into the book's world! I love the way all of the characters from the previous books of the series are integrated into this book. I love how real Shayla and Tony were portrayed- they had real fears and insecurities. It shows that good people can be taken advantage of but that doesn't mean they are doormats... Live and learn and learn again...
I would advise anyone who likes to read about love and the BDSM lifestyle to read this book... I love HEAs!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! What an amazing story of love, respect and companionship. I loved Tony and Shayla's story. Tony is definitely the ultimate Alpha male. I found that once I started I couldn't put this book down. Tymber hit this one out of the park. I would love to see more along this same story line that includes all of these characters.

After reading "The Reluctant Dom," I was curious to see if Tony got a happily ever after.... Solid book though not one of my faves (undoubtedly BC I'm not into being a slave or beatings with a cane). I won't be reading BDSM again for a while. Good book for anyone curious about 'real life' BDSM instead of its typical use as a schtick.

Loved it! It was like she knew what was in my head 20 years ago. Not only was it a love story, (ok a really hot love story) it also gives big insight in to the BDSM lifestyle. Awesome book Tymber! I'm so glad I read it.

Loved the story and loved how Tony and Shayla got their HEA. Supporting characters were from previous books and it was great to catch up with them and know how they were doing. There was lots of hot sex, of the BDSM variety, which gave us insight into Tony and who he was.

Well, I am so shocked by how unmoved I was by this book. Such a nosedive in comparison to the Reluctant Dom. Definitely found that the "formula" was missing. I got so tired of reading "such a good pet"
