The third in the 'Red Gambit' series, Stalemate deals with the events of the Third World War, up to 25th October 1945. Relating the experiences from both sides of the divide, and from all levels. 'Stalemate' deals with the man in the trench, through the pilot in his fighter, through to the Generals who direct the war from their command centres. 'Stalemate' brings the first stages of WW3 to a climax on the Alsatian plain, a sleepy town in Holland, and an insignificant town in Germany, whose name is now synonymous with death on a grand scale. [The ‘Red Gambit Series’ novels are works of fiction, and deal with fictional events. Most of the characters therein are a figment of the author’s imagination. Without exception, those characters that are historical figures of fact or based upon historical figures of fact are used fictitiously, and their actions, demeanour, conversations, and characters are similarly all figments of the author’s imagination.]

As with the previous books, Colin Gee continues on his alternative history thriller adding more intrigue with spies and internal politics.

Colin Gee has done an excellent job of making combat believable as it plays out in his writing. Nothing is overly exaggerated that would leave the reader to disbelief. Everything his writes whether in descriptions or conversations is all completely believable as real life.

The book remains centered around campaigns and individual battles but now Gee is adding the twists and turns that would accompany such a conflict within something like the Soviet military structure. From early on in the other books there was the subterfuge of the spy world but now it is becoming its own story line.

In the world of alternative military history, this is one of the best I have ever read.

As good as the first two in the series, full of political machinations ( on both sides), complicated characters and excellent battle scenes - it was good to see my late father's Regiment, the QOCH get a mention. One little error though - Argyll was spelt incorrectly, the book spelling being the spelling used by Plymouth Argyle Football Club!

Third in the series...continued excellence

Detailed, imaginative, and exceptionally concise writing that is gripping as well as entertaining. Recommended reading for anyone that enjoys alternative history. I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

Part three brings the intensity to a much higher level. You begin to become invested in the characters from both sides of the battle and find yourself either rooting for or against them making it to the next chapter of this saga. The last 30-40 pages are brilliant in its unexpected conclusion.
