Everyone in Jonesville thought that Bryce Evans had the perfect life in High School: he was the Mayor's son, the quarterback for the football team, the boyfriend of the head cheerleader and had a 4.1 GPA. His acceptance to Notre Dame came as no surprise but when he chose to enlist in the army instead everyone was shocked.

Lexi Jones was the quiet girl in school and kept to her small group of eccentric friends. She had no connection to any of the popular kids except for one incident on Prom Night when her path crossed with Bryce's.

When Bryce enlisted Lexi was the only one that wasn't disappointed and decided to send him anonymous letters as a way to feel connected to him. She stopped after a year because she felt there was nowhere for their relationship to go.

Fast-forward four years and Bryce is back in Jonesville and once again he and Lexi cross paths. Only he's no longer the seemingly perfect man and Lexi's no longer the quiet girl.

This time their relationship is quite different but both of them have secrets from the past and friends that threaten to ruin their chance at happiness together.

I must say that I liked this book for the first few chapters. Everything was cute. This book was narrated by Lexi Lord and Bryce Evans and their narrations were okay.
Lexi has this huge crush on Bryce Evans since high school but was way too shy to tell that to him. Then, these events happen which either of them don't want to talk about and Bryce then moves away to War. (Sorry, I'm not explaining "these events" due to spoilers)
Lexi sends him letters under a pseudonym and it makes him feel like a 'kindred spirit' during his time in military service and when he comes back to Jonesville, he desperately seeks for this girl who wrote him these letters. And that's how the story proceeds and everything was okay. Then somehow the characters get totally messed up. It just went down after a few chapters. I found it very hard to stop rolling my eyes but I can't say I didn't enjoy reading it. It was okay. And that's why I'm giving it two stars. It was okay but it intrigue me much.

So, I didn't like it...then I kind of did...then I didn't...and now I just don't know. My first impression was that the story felt very juvenile and irritating. I just accepted that these characters had the mentalities of giggly, pre-teen girls and would be about as deep as a kiddie pool. Then, Lexi and Bryce had their moments separate from their friends and I started to have a little hope. I thought that maybe I had been to hasty in my judgment and decided to give it another shot.

Here's the basics. Lexi and Bryce grow up in the same town. He is the golden boy of their town, high school football star, etc. She describes herself as invisible and secretly has a crush on him. One night he saves her when she is being attacked. He joins the Marines. She becomes his anonymous pen pal. He returns to town and the two finally get their chance together...if they can sort out all of this out. Throw in parent-drama and friend-drama and it's enough to make your head spin in such a short span of time.

For a brief period of time, Lexi and Bryce seemed to be headed in the right direction. I hoped they were going to break away from their petty, social circles and move on with their lives, leaving the childish, petty drama behind. Unfortunately, they couldn't make it through even one date without catty exes, over-the-top reactions and alcohol-induced mistakes.

This short story ended with me really disliking Bryce and wanting to knock some sense into Lexi. It also ended on a major cliffhanger and even though I'm not very impressed with the story, I'm curious. Ugh! To top it all off, I know I'll probably buy the next book just to see what happens and end up being disappointed all over again. Damn my compulsive need to finish every story I start!

WHAT. THE. F*CK.

Please let our daughters/nieces/sisters/mothers/aunts/any-female-alive never, EVER, read this horribly degrading piece of work. I have been an avid Goodreads 'stalker' for 6 years and this is the only review I have written. THAT is how strongly I feel about the infuriatingly power-stripping, derogatory, and demeaning message this story sends. Never mind the hideously first-grade dialogue (which I am typically less than critical of in favor of an enveloping story) or the chaotic and ill-timed plot development. The story itself was superficial and just......HORRIBLE.

Here's what I learned from reading (skimming) this book:

1. Looks are of utmost importance in determining the value of an individual - ESPECIALLY women.
2. Virginity is the most valuable virtue to behold, saved only for the right guy...the right guy being the guy you met once in high school, who treated everyone like garbage and thinks of you as a charity case (oh-but only in the beginning).
3. The 'right guy' can totally have played a part in your rape in high school, as long as he said "Sorry!" 4 years later once.
4. You should totally give your virginity up to a self-obsessed ass-hat as long as he says "I love you."
5. Apparently the Marine Corps creates ungrateful little nancy-boys now? Kind of opposite of what I thought before reading this book, but okay.
6. Handsome guys that work hard and are intelligent are not as good as handsome guys that are popular.
7. Rape is totally okay if someone says they're sorry.
8. Girls can't have supportive friends. Period.
9. Females are either whores (as our lovely hero refers to our heroine's mother), bitches, or doormats.
10. All faith in humanity is dead.

Now, I should reiterate: I enjoy (very much) an alpha male hero. However, that alpha male needs an equally alpha female, or it DOESN'T WORK. Though, I would even argue here that the hero - I can't even say his name without gagging - is less than alpha, and that's putting it nicely.

Puke. I'd rather read Twilight.

This book starts off as a predictable romance, where you assume the hero will solve the mystery of who wrote the letters and they both get their HEA, but it quickly veers off that course. By halfway through the book, I don't even know who to root for. Most of the characters aren't all that likable. Lexi isn't so bad, but she is dull, whiny and doesn't have much personality. And Luke is alright, but if he professes to have been in love with Lexi for forever and was saving himself for the right girl, then why did he have a girlfriend for two years, who he ultimately slept with? He kinda lost my sympathy with that move. If he really loved Lexi so much, he would've done something about it before it got to that point.

And I liked Bryce in the beginning when he is a tortured, misunderstood guy who was raised with a silver spoon, wised up, and joined the Marines to get his life together. But then he turns out to be the worst kind of prick: keeping giant secrets, lying, cheating, and topping off the asshole cake by sleeping with Lexi's best friend and then turning around and taking Lexi's virginity scant hours later, without telling her he screwed Anna just hours before. I want him to get hit by a bus by the end of the book, he is such an ass.

And Lexi is an oblivious, naive, foolish pushover. Grow a backbone, chick!

This book ends on a really terrible, random cliffhanger, which I HATE, but I won't be picking up the sequel. I can already guess how it will turn out, and to be honest, I don't really care about any of the characters.

Sorry, I hate giving bad reviews, but this book annoyed me in so many ways!
Firstly, the editing was shoddy. There's no excuse. The bizarre avoidance of abbreviation made it annoying to read, because the characters didn't speak like normal people.
Next, the not quite ending... that point near the end at which Lexi was starting to come to an important realisation... it made the whole book feel pointless! By the time it came to the actual ending, I just didn't care any more.
The 'issues' - these kids are making way too much of some pretty lame non-issues. Then the issues that they do have (yes, I get that almost being raped is going to affect someone majorly) don't seem to be reacted to in the right way.
It feel like someone has read some New Adult books, said 'anyone could write one of these', and gone ahead and done it. This book is the proof that while anyone can write, very few people can write well. The characters don't gel, they're all over the place emotionally, the story is non-existant and it's just plain annoying!
This is just my personal opinion. I didn't get it. But you might, so even though I didn't enjoy the book, if you like the sound of it then you should still give it a go. Reviews are useful, but should always be taken with a pinch of salt as it's completely personal.

WHAT THE HELL. I'm seriously depressed now. This novel was just so messed up and all over the place and so damn frustrating.
The beginning was really promising and the plot seemed fine. But. Then. Things. Got. Messed. Up.

*spoilers ahead*

So there's Lexi who thinks she loves this 'golden' (or actually not at all golden) guy called Bryce (whom she actually doesn't really know). Aw and how cute: they even have a half sister in common, they don't know her though. GROSS, I know.
And then there are Lexis' best friends, Luke and Anna. Luke loves Lexi and everyone realises they'd be the perfect couple except for her. Cause she loves Bryce. Bryce who by the way sleeps with her best friend Anna the day Lexi and Bryce start seeing each other. Yeah he seems like a wonderful boyfriend and that's why (still at the same day) he also takes away Lexi's virginity. And declares his endless love for her. YEAH RIGHT.

I just didn't get the point. There was just some messed up instalove and a lot of drama around. And the writing and editing was pretty miserable, too. And the plot developing. Gosh, JUST STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK. IT IS NOT WORTH THE TIME. And I normally never say something like that.

This by far is my favorite story of Helen's. It has everything friendship, loss, heartache, love. It has it all. It also has a bunch of laughs. Bryce is hilarious!! The FSoG in the library, priceless and one of my favorite parts! He also has some secrets I want to know about!!! Good Lord and then Anna!! I am soo angry at Anna and Bryce! Like seriously!!!! I can't see that going well. And the ending!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Total cliffhanger! Cannot wait until the second book comes out, must read series all! Best yet! <3
Need some more steamy Bryce and Lexi scenes though ;-)

Oh what tangled webs we weave . . . and then there’s a love triangle as well! New to me author J.S. Cooper packs this one to the brim with a story filled with friendships, betrayals, secrets, lust and of course, the power of love. There are no lulls to be found and the plot is gripping. It's a little rough around the edges and sometimes stretches the imagination but still kept me in my chair.

We get points of view from both Bryce and Lexi, which revs up the depth for each character in the storyline. I would have enjoyed a third POV from Luke, as well. He’s a major player in the event that is set to go down. And it is definitely pointing towards choosing up sides: Will it be Bryce or will it be Luke?

“Scarred” leaves readers with another of those all-too-frequent “OMG” cliffhangers but hopefully the end is near when “Healed” is released on March 22, 2013.

This is going to be a really short review.

Firts things first: I liked this book and really enjoyed it! Basically, it was a quick read. It was interesting and well thought-out but not an incredible amount of depth.
I enjoyed reading about Lexi and Bryce and I truely wanted for them to get their HEA. But I kinda have a feeling that there is going to be twist in their relationship .

The story line is interesting so Im going to read the sequel. If you're looking for something quick and distracting, then go ahead and read this.

Umm...well, ahhhhh......ya. Couldn't do it. These are the most immature young women I've ever had the displeasure of reading a story about. I got 2 chapters in and literally the thought of continuing is too painful. Shushing her friend constantly, feeling like she's going to throw up because he actually LOOKS at her and says HELLO for the first time EVER?

I can't do it. I'd put this into the YA category if it weren't for the sex I've seen discussed. Let the kids read this one because I promise you, ladies- its not for us.

Horribly child like characters in an okay story. The characters are what make a story and these just don't make it. They are written as very immature. Makes the story hard to read. I won't be reading the second story because I just don't care how this one ends.

I almost liked this book but, unfortunately, it turned out to be nothing like I expected.

The book started out fine and I was enjoying how the relationships were set up but then everything when into a frenzy of dramatic overload. The author tried to put way too much into such a short book and the result...

a plethora of people who were so intent on living in the past and failing to truly move forward that they start extremely shallow, meaningless relationships and call it love

There's a distinct difference between love and infatuation. But, the definition of that difference was absent and as a result, the character's (mainly Lexi and Bryce) emotions were very insincere/fake. I found that by the end of the book, characters that I thought I was going to like had changed into characters I despised.

The whole book went from decent potential to increasingly frustrating at lightning speed. And, the dialogue was terrible. I could have forgiven that if the story had been better.

Lexi was 22 years old and she still spoke as if she was a 13 year old with her first crush. She couldn't see the amazing guy she had right in front of her, Luke, who she didn't deserve at all! She was so fixated on the idea of Bryce as her "real life prince charming" that she failed to actually be present in reality.

Bryce was so fixated on needing to be saved that Lexi's compassion for him made her an object of his desire before he really knew who she was as a person. Lexi and Bryce both professed to love one another when they truly had no sense of who they were loving...

I felt like I was in a soap opera where everyone was supposed to be an adult but couldn't get past the mentality of a 16 year old.

Scarred by J.S.Cooper was a New Adult book that read very similarly to a YA book. The synopsis made me hopeful, but sadly, the delivery disappointed. If I hadn't been told by the story that the characters were in their early twenties, I would have assumed from the vocabulary used, the immature interactions and somewhat whiny nature of the heroine, that they were all around sixteen years of age.

With a fairly predictable plot, you would hope for characters who would pull you into the story, causing you to be invested emotionally in the journey. However, it was actually difficult to like the characters. Luke, the loveable 'boy next door' was perhaps the shining light in the story. Lexi, the heroine, didn't seem to be able to see beyond her high school fantasies and live in the real world; Anna, the supposed best friend was dreadful in her friendship and betrayal; and Bryce, the damaged Hero - I felt for him. Yet, I feel the author could have done so much more for this character. It felt as though he was simply an ex-marine to explain the letters between him and Lexi. Little more was said about his experience and how that had shaped him.

There were just too many unbelievable elements to the story. I feel this book could have had a terrific wow factor had all the plot pieces been subjected to thorough proof reading. Thankfully, the manuscript was fairly clean of editing blips.

I get frustrated with books where a cliffhanger is created, just to involve a sequel. The story could have been developed more to necessitate a sequel though, had there been more character development and storyline editing. If you like YA books, that are not particularly deep, this book would suit you.

This is going to be a quick review, one I don't even know if I'll put on my blog.

Basically, this was a quick read. Almost like reading a novella. It was sort of a fluffy read. For me, it was a good distraction read. There was good back story to the drama, though there weren't exactly overarching plot lines, ya know? Like, it was interesting and pretty well thought-out, but not an incredible amount of depth.

Because this book was quick and sort of fluffy, I wasn't worried about connecting to the characters. I was reading it more for entertainment than a soul-deep connection. I enjoyed reading about the characters for the most part, though, and I was rooting for them to get their happily ever afters. I'll admit that at times the characters seemed a bit too young. It felt like I was reading about 15 year olds, not people in their early-twenties.

This story could have benefited tremendously from a professional editor. I mean, the writing wasn't awful or anything, but there were some grammatical errors and some places where the writing could have simply used more.

I'm curious enough to see where the next book is headed, because if nothing else, this story line is interesting. If you're looking for something quick and distracting, if you don't care that the writing or the plot or the characters aren't completely mind-blowing, then I say go ahead and read this. I don't feel like it was a waste of time or anything. But if you're looking for the next Book Of Your Soul, I'd recommend saving this for later.

GODS. Reading this is soooo painful. Not that kind if painful where you're hurting along with the characters and sobbing while reading it. It's that kind of pain where the beginning has that some sort of potential and then, BOOM, it just circled the drain. I don't want to be mean, but, it's like it was written by some kid in High School where the characters were poorly, erm, developed, the banters the characters have were blah and the plot was ekk. Obviously I ran out of adjectives to describe it. HAHA. I'm not trying to generalize, I mean, I used to write that kind of plot back then...that's why I have this cringe factor whenever I read my previous so called works (and by GODS, I will never ever post that. It's just sooooo embarrassing) I haven't got around with writing again because I have this major case of writer's block...well, I'm a feeler writer. HEH. But yeah, the cringe factor was back when I read this. It's a waste of time. I don't recommend it...but it never came to that point where I actually hated it. It's such a pity that that potential gone to waste. And I might not read the next one. I scanned the next book actually...and yep, my hunch was right.

If you know anything at all about me, it is that I can never have enough books. I read the blurb on this one and dived in. Bryce feels responsible for the scars that Lexi has on her soul and the death of his best friend. He turns down a full ride to Notre Dame and enlists in the military. Four years later, his demons still ride him all the way back to Jonesville.
Lexi has always know that she was the plain jane of her school but with her best friends, Luke and Anna by her, it didn't matter. She has always loved Bryce from afar and when he enlists in the marines, she takes it has her chance to show him. She begins to write anonymous letters to him.
This story tells the action from both Lexi and Bryce's POV. This allows us to see that Bryce and the popular kids knew who Lexi was. The envied her grace and her relationship with Luke. Lexi seems hung up on living up a fantasy that she has built around Bryce but her thoughts drift back to Luke.
This book ends on a cliffhanger but the sequel comes out on March 22, 2013. Guess what I am buying? :)

This book had a lot going for it in the beginning. The storyline was pretty unique and the characters all started out pretty likeable, but that all didn't hold for me though out the whole story. Also, another thing. I am so tired of reading books that don't finish the story. I have to buy the NEXT book to figure out what happens from the second book. Trust me, I know all about cliffhangers and stuff like that, but to just stop the story and now tell me I need to buy the next book to find out what happens, well, that just stinks and I won't do it. I didn't love this story enough to want to buy the next one. I want to know what happens and torture myself with the rest of the story because I have a 'need to know' personality, but I'm just annoyed at how this one ended. I felt like the writing got immature and certain situations developed a little too quickly as well.

I didn't finish. Lexi was saying Luke after everything she said to him got distracting and then everything that happened after the party, I had to stop. Anna is a terrible friend and possibly psycho, Lexi is just as strange, and Luke should have left or at least moved out of his parents house. How are those three oblivious to everything around them. And why are they all living at home! Bryce is a jackhole and an overreacter, Lexi leaves with her best friend and you fall apart. I'm being generous with two stars, but maybe it got better in the end and I missed out. I doubt it though.

Don't really like the characters yet I can't help but know what happens in the next book, so I guess I'm gonna read it.

Anyways this book was kinda odd. There's so much in the past that we seem to have missed so were really kept in the dark for that.

Anna ...I don't like her, she's just a jealous bad friend.

I hate what Anna and Bryce did, and I hate the reasons why they did it. She's stupid jealous bitch and he's stupid gullible ass.

We'll see what happens in the next book I guess.

Not really bothered.

The plot progression was too fast for my liking, it was fast and now i'm furious. Everything happened very quickly and some things were not justifiable, I guess under different circumstances things change but I still find some of the actions displayed by the characters were absurd.

Maybe I will read the next book.. maybe I won't.

I liked Lexi and Luke. I thought Bryce was a complete jerk and Lexi was stupid for even liking him. Really...she wants to rush into a hook up with a total jerk and then, he continues to be a jerk. It was a no go for me. Luke was a good guy but, Bryce was a waste of space.
