Unexpected

Rate this book
Britta Monroe’s senior year isn’t going at all as she’d planned. Her long-term boyfriend has just broken up with her. She’s worried that her mom’s dating her volleyball coach. Her semi-estranged dad suddenly wants back into her life. She’s pretty sure her best friend Willow has an unpleasant secret. As if all of that wasn’t bad enough, she’s afraid she may have accidentally developed a crush on her other best friend’s brother, Tristan.

Having a crush on Tristan wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. Considering that he’s had a crush on her for years. The only problem—and it’s a big one—is that his sister Jamie has made it clear she wouldn’t approve.

Through it all, Tristan helps Britta realize one thing: The only way to get through life? Is to expect the unexpected.

I'm confused...

Do people in Wisconsin really think cappuccino and coffee are two separate things?

"It was a coffee shop and while none of us actually drank coffee, it was our favorite place to meet."

Very next page:

"And while I would never order a coffee, I did get a cappuccino more often than not."

I would appreciate it if someone from Wisconsin could help me out with this because I can't tell if it's just some kind of regional inference or ignorance on the part of the author.

I wish I could say I was shocked by it, but really, it just made me laugh. Because this happened in the first chapter:

"Jamie Jacobs had been my best friend since the fifth grade. She lived four houses away, in the same housing development."

Next page:

"I quickly covered the few blocks to Jamie's."

Don't get me wrong, though, I'm not rating this book a mere two stars merely because of a few inconsistencies. I'm rating it low because the protagonist, Britta Monroe, is a selfish, whiny brat presented as a supposedly likeable heroine. There really isn't much to her personality save for her anger towards her cheating father, which, let's face it, has gone well past "irrational" when she still refuses to even speak to him years after her parents' divorce. I can't stand characters like this. At all. She spends the entire book whining about one thing or another; her "Ugh, ex-boyfriend, Cory", her new boyfriend, her mom, her dad, her homework, her friends, etc. Basically anything that happens in her life is something to complain about at some point, and then, of course, the reader is treated to it. Oh, joy of joys. As for the other characters; all cliches. Pointless. The only redeeming character in the entire story is Tristan, and he's the only reason this book is getting two stars instead of one. He does have a flaw, though; he didn't dump Britta.

The story structure is pretty awful. There's some tension and an obstacle or two, but the relationship comes together much too quickly, then is followed by one tired plot device after another, culminating in an infuriating misunderstanding that nearly ruins the fairytale ending. Zzzzzzzz.

And can I just say I'm sick and tired of the word 'Ugh'? All these Judy Blume wannabes have ruined that word.

The single biggest theme from reviewers so far has been that this is a "clean" book they can let their daughters read.

And again...

I have had this on my Kindle for a while but haven’t read it due to a review I read. I thought it would be a waste of my time. Having said that, I’m done reading the crappy reviews on this site. It has started to seem very much like some people just enjoy trashing authors for entertainment purposes. Or they read books that are clearly not in a genre they enjoy and then they turn around and take it out on the author. That seems to me it’s more the reviewer's fault than the author's. I mean, just because a book is free doesn't mean you should read it. But…whatever.

I was expecting to dislike Britta. I thought she was going to be whiny or self-centered. She wasn’t. The review I read stated she complained about everything: Her mom, her homework, her boyfriend, er friends etc. I didn’t perceive it that way at all. In fact, at a time when so many YA novels have loathsome parents, Britta had a great relationship with her mom. She adored her mom and I really appreciated that trait in her because it was so obvious. Her dad, well, no, that wasn’t the case. But she had very good reason. As for homework, I think there was one, possibly two comments stating she worked hard for her grades. I don’t take that as complaining. In fact, it's nice to know she's not perfect. As for her friends, I don't recall her complaining about them a single time. Not once.

Yes, there was of course conflict at the end of the book, which is needed for a good story arc. I really enjoyed the last several chapters because it was a refreshing spin, the last 3-2 chapters had a plotline I'd never read before. I liked the originality of it.

Enough about that. As for the book, I’d give it a 4.5. I went into this with really low expectations and I was happy to be so pleasantly surprised. Then again, I reall enjoy this genre so this book was totally my taste. If you aren't a clean young adult fan, then no, you probably won't love (or even like) this book.

Britta had a nice set of friends and she was a great friend in return. I thought the pacing was good. We got to know them and even though the relationship was kind of fast once it happened, they'd known each other since they were kids so it really wasn't.

It was a really cute twist on the best friend’s brother. It was a clean young adult book which is getting harder to come by. There was a curve thrown in at the end that I really didn’t see coming so I loved that. In fact, I was sure I knew what the twist was but then after another chapter, realized I didn't have it all figured out.

I enjoyed the side characters. I really liked Tristan.

I liked that it didn’t follow what has become the “cookie cutter” norm for self-pub…a happily ever after with a ring, wedding, kids and all of that unreasonable excess. I mean, seriously, these kids are usually in high school. Seems silly to always end with a wedding (anyhow, that's a personal pet peave, didn't mean to go off on a tangent). The ending wrapped up nicely, leaving it to the imagination. At the same time, it sent the reader off in a great direction.

I will definitely read more from this author.

Here's a simple, sweet, light read about a seventeen year old dealing with a break-up, newly discoveredvfeelings for her best friend's younger brother and her single mother re-discovering love.

While she has seen her father cheat on her mother, at no point does this overwhelm the story with darkness.

This is a typical 17 year old girl who's coming to terms with her relationships, friends, insecurities and growth pangs with more hope than drama.

Britta is very lovable as a character as are her best friends willow and Jamie. I think every girl has friends like this - a drama queen and a suffering but strong friend.

Tristan is a clear hero - silent, handsome, non-pushy and super-talented. What's not to love about him.

I love the twist in Britta's mom's love story, which reminded me that love and relationships can be complicated, but love can overcome it all.

Recommended on a weekend afternoon or a rainy, lazy day.

A really cute and innocent!!! YA romance. I found it a little predictable in parts BUT that doesn't mean I didn't really love it. I did. I loved Briggs and Tristan together...they were an adorable couple. I really enjoyed watching them fall for each other. If you are wanting something easy and fun this is the book for you!
