Like every resident of Fane’s Cove, Cadence McKenna knows her town is, well, odd. And yet, they’re accustomed to the near-daily supernatural happenings- so accustomed, in fact, that when Grey Addison moves to town and stays, she is shocked to find that she’s the only one who insists that there must be something strange about him.

With her life-long- if minor- psychic sensitivity handed down from her grandmother, she knows that what she feels isn’t simple paranoia. After all, how many normal guys pay no mind to random poltergeist activity occurring right in front of them?

Cadence can’t blame anyone for wanting to ignore that there might be more to his presence there- perhaps if he is a normal guy, it’s just the first sign that whatever it is about the town that drives visitors away is fading. She might have even grudgingly let it go, but then she sees Grey acting very suspiciously and knows that she can’t dismiss her feelings until she understands why he’s in Fane’s Cove. Even if it means sticking her neck out by pretending to get close to him . . . and learning more about her town’s history than anyone would ever want to know.

I am a gothic tree-hugger, a sufferer of social anxiety, and a fierce supporter of gender equality. A married mother of 4 (and one cat, who sort of thinks he's human, anyway), I'm fascinated by paranormal phenomena & ancient cultures, and have received several awards and nominations for my amateur writing (from 2007 to 2012, at which time I chose to opt out of nomination eligibility, because I'd signed with a publisher).

I'm extremely approachable, but painfully shy (note the mention of social anxiety above). This shyness is crippling, and often strips my of my ability to simply reach out to others. I am aware that to those who don't know this, my silence can often come across as snobbery. I promise you, that is not what it is. I'm extremely informal (as you've probably guessed), and laid back, I'm just basket case who trips trying to get out of her own way.

As a hobby, I write adult-rated fanfiction under the pseudonym Freya Ishtar (somehow this https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... is on good reads without my authorization or knowledge).

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down! My first impression review is that everyone who loves a good paranormal YA romance should pick this book up! Read it now, because it was an absolute joy to read.

Cae was a really great character. She’s the best kind of spunky, independent woman you could ever hope to meet in a YA book. Her personality and inner dialogue was amazingly well done. I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. Her reluctant relationship with Grey is also a highpoint of the book. They have a great, witty, sarcastic back and forth that was so entertaining that it had me laughing out loud at times.

The storyline is a unique take on some paranormal elements that I’ve never read about before. I found myself making connections at the same time as the main characters, which is always a good thing for me. I hate solving the mystery too early in the book. This story also gave a great start to a series of books without making me feel like they were purposefully introducing too many plotlines or jamming new characters down your throat. That being said – I cannot wait to read the next book! I wish I could dive right into another book with these characters. I want to watch Cae and Grey’s relationship develop. I want to see what happens with her best friend Wendi. I want to know what’s going on with her mother and father. You’ve got me hooked!

Based on the title and the book cover, I wasn’t sure if this book was going to have enough of a balance between paranormal and YA romance to keep my interest. Boy, I was really wrong! This is definitely a case where I’m glad I took the “risk” and requested this ARC. Go read this book!

Buried is rather tough one for me to rate because even though I liked it there were some things that annoyed me so in the end I settled on a three.

The book is set in a small town where weird things tend to happen. The citizens know that their town isn’t normal but they don’t really dwell on the things that happen. For them it’s kind of normal and a lot of the times they tend to overlook the things happening because what else are they supposed to do? I’d call it a ghost town but it isn’t that exactly, it’s just creepy.

The plot deals with unearthing the secrets of this town. If I had known that before I started the book I would have been a lot more excited because I love secrets. It starts with the Addison family, there are no records of them ever living in town before but Grey has proof that they have, so is the town hiding something or is something being hidden from the town?

Despite this promising plot there were a couple of things that bothered me. Starting with the pretty people, again I hate it when everyone is pretty. I don’t understand why everyone must be pretty. It bothers me. Both our main characters are pretty and even though one of them is described as ‘old school’ pretty it counts. Grey is ‘effing’ hot (summing up the description of his hotness in the best way I can). Why is there so much focus on the looks? I don’t really care if they are pretty or not, if they annoy me the fact that they are pretty is just going to make it worse, and yes both Grey and Candence annoy me.

Wendi is her best friend yet all Candence really does is complain about her and look down on her, not that I like Wendi but they are best friends, I’d have liked to have seen more of a relationship between the two. The only role Wendi has here is the best friend crushing on the older brother. The older brother, who goes to college, has a crush on Wendi as well. Talk about ridiculous. Why would he have a crush on her? The only good quality about Wendi that has been mentioned is that she is extremely loyal.

One thing that bothers me personally was the fact that she asked why all boys were obsessed with Star Wars. It’s kind of offensive because I happen to be a fan and she makes it sound like Star Wars is a thing only guys like which isn’t true. This won’t bother most people though.

Grey is way too over protective. He tried to tell her a gazillion times to back off because it will keep her safe. I am sure she doesn’t want to die either and if she is okay with helping you out than leave her alone. It’s her decision to make not yours! She isn’t a damsel in distress. She happens to be smarter than you and you couldn’t have gotten anywhere without her, so please, stop.

Candence of course keeps secrets from Grey. If she had told him what was happening with her, some things could have been prevented. Now though, the damage has been done.

Despite all these things I am kind of excited for the sequel and even though the ending bothered me to no end, I’d like to see where things go from here.

Cadence McKenna lives in a town called Fane's Cove. In this town, all kinds of crazy ghostly happening occur, quite frequently, and everyone who lives there knows their town is haunted. I have the give credit to the author, I just loved this story from beginning to end. It was well written, minus a few typos here and there, but I'm talking more about the quality of the writing. It was descriptive, I loved the characters and felt like they could be my friends.

So Cadence starts out rather openly glaring at a boy in school who she thinks has something to hide. And she doesn't just do it once or twice, she goes on and on just glaring and scowling at him at every opportunity. That is, until her friend gives her a brilliant idea. She should just ask him out on a date, that way she can get to know him better and find out the answers to the questions she has about him. Well, why didn't she think of that herself.

And that is where it all starts, the story unfolds after Grey Addison and Cadence go on their first, fake, date. There were so many things that I liked about this book it would be too hard to list them all, but I will list a few. The plot was very interesting and developed to where there was always something exciting happening to keep my attention fully engrossed in this book. I even took it with me to work and read on my breaks, which is something I generally don't do because I only have fifteen minutes, or a half hour. That just doesn't seem like enough time and I am not someone who likes to put a book down if it is good. But I did, even though I didn't want to. The characters were developed and very believable. And I just loved the ending, which I really didn't see coming at all.

Bravo to Gerilyn Marin, who does a fantastic job delivering us a well thought out book full of surprises. A definite must-read, if I say so myself!

With paranormal books not being my favorite genre, this was not one of my favorite books. That being said, it was very well written and parts of it were very entertaining, with a few predictable parts thrown in as well. If you were a big fan of paranormal, this would be a very enjoyable book. I received this book for free from a Goodreads giveaway.

I found this book to be enjoyable enough. Well enough to keep me reading to the end. Was I wowed? Eh, not really. At times I felt like it was trying to do too much. Even for a paranormal some of it was just kind of... out there you know? And characters emotions ran all over the place. Overly dramatic. It felt soap opera-ish at times. Instead of "He ate a cookie." It was "He ate a cookie!" I know, my example is awesome. I mean it's AWESOME! Ha...anyway.

The somewhat confusing romance between Cadence and Grey almost seemed pointless at times and I had to wonder...does it really need to be here? And this is coming from a person who refused to read anything but romance novels for years! I mean the situation became quite annoying. You have two people who obviously are into each other. One, Grey, being more obvious about it and doesn't really care if she or anyone else knows about it. And the other, Cadence, hating the fact that she does likes him deep down, so every time she feels something for him she's mentally disgusted or disappointed in herself, which gets real old, real fast.

In order to not seem "suspicious" that she's spending time with him to investigate all the weirdness she is constantly "having to tell people" (friends, family, etc) that she's dating him. But then she gets mad at him because she's lying to everyone...because she doesn't want people to think they're dating...but she sorta likes him too...but...you see what I mean by annoying and confusing? And to top it off they're constantly either to themselves or to each other's faces talking about how "he/she is lucky their cute because they're stupid." Always with the stupid comments. I felt like we were 8 on the playground and at any minute Grey was going to pull her pigtail and push her to the ground. *Sigh* At one point, SHE gets mad at HIM and starts going off on him in the hallways at school because, and this makes SO much sense, she finds out something about her own family history and because he, a relative stranger to the town, didn't pick up on the connection and tell her about it. Hold on I need to find a pencil to jab into my brain so maybe I can make sense of that...

I felt like things were "dumbed down" for me too. Example: Cadence is going over a list and she says "a knife-though, this is Sarah, so the word used is athame" now I'm no stranger to the world of paranormal. The two people in the scene at the moment are no stranger to the world of the paranormal. So if you're having your main character explain something to me that, even if this was my first time reading something like this, I could take two seconds to look up what it means. Having your characters dumb it down for me is just a tiny bit insulting.

I know from all my complaints that it must seem sort of like "why did you keep going then?" Here's the thing, there were flaws. It took a while for things to all connect together and once they started too some stuff became a bit predictable. But the characters were likeable and it had its moments where it made me laugh or feel something. Bottom line is, would I read this book again? Honestly no. Probably not. But since there was a...hello! Major cliffhanger...ugh, I will more than likely be reading the sequel because I'm interested enough to find out what happens next.

Buried is a well-written, very original young adult urban fantasy, and is far better than some of the offerings from much larger publishing houses. It is well thought-out, well finished and very streamlined. Nothing necessary is missed and nothing is overdone. It flows well, unravelling the mystery at just the right pace, and the plot has enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes.

The story is about two teens. The boy, Grey, has just arrived in Cadence's town. Yes, he's the new boy in school, and, yes, he is cute, but that's as far as the cliched YA beginning goes. The story soon became unique; Cadence is barely aware of his cuteness, what bugs her about him is that he is not remotely perturbed by the strange poltergeist activities in the town. The town has always been like that, but someone from outside should be freaked out by dusters flying, unthrown by human hands, at a teacher, and other such things.

So Cadence makes up a reason to talk to him and so the fun begins. Grey has lived with such strange goings-on his whole life. They follow his family around and he's here to find out what happened to one of his ancestors in the hope that he can get the hauntings to stop. Apparently this is his thing and is of no interest to his parents who have the absent parent syndrome often found in YA books. (I get the impression that the current thinking for some is that you want to cut the number of words down, or save parental complications in the plot, just write the parents out of it.) For me, it's the weakest part of this story. Parents always being somewhere else is less believable to me than the supernatural aspect.

Cadence doesn't want to be his girlfriend, but Grey is clearly interested in her and despite Cae's reticence their relationship meanders into romance as they set out to solve the mystery of Grey's lost ancestor.
The main characters are well-drawn and likeable, and Cae is not unlike my own heroine of the Diamond Peak Series, Ariel, in her reticence to get all girly giggly over a guy and her courage in facing the unknown.
It's a solid YA fantasy that reads more like contemporary fiction for much of the book, the withy demon stuff only coming in at the end. The end is unexpected and I presume there will be a follow-up because something fairly major has happened which warrants some further exploration.

I received this book free from the publisher in return for an honest review.

When I saw the synopsis for this one I was really hoping for something truly original. I read a lot of books and while that normally isn't a downfall of any proportions it can kind of hinder the ability to find something new in the genres that I read the most in. So when I do find something new and unheard of, it is rather refreshing.

I went into this read with absolutely no expectations whatsoever. Not just because the author was unknown to me but because honestly, I didn't want to be disappointed. I hate it when I get excited about what appears to be a completely original premises and later find out it is so cookie cutter it isn't even funny. So, yeah, no expectations whatsoever.

And you know what? I got an original storyline. In fact, I loved the storyline! My only complaint is that things moved a little slowly at first. In fact, even though things are being discovered and relationships built, it really isn't until the last 30% of the book that things really get rolling, but, it wasn't a bad thing.

I did have a few unanswered questions that I wish had been answered about Grey and Cadence's families but I am hoping the next book will get more into that. I did get a lot of my questions answered, just not all of them.

Cae and Grey were great characters, I liked them, maybe not loved them but I liked them well enough and I can see myself continuing with the series when the second book is released.

The author pulled me right into the story from the very first page and made it not only funny but even a little bit creepy at times with the poltergeist activity and the nightmares that Cae was plagued with.

I liked the story behind Jumping Black Flash and the history of Fane's Cove (although again, I wish there would have been just a little more detail behind the town's history but again, I am sure more details will be revealed with the next book).

I think the author did a great job with this one and like I mentioned above, I would definitely continue with the story.

Cadence lives in a small town that just so happens to be haunted. The residents of the town just brush the events off as normal, but so does new arrival Grey. He does not bat an eye at the supernatural occurrences, which causes Cadence to question his motives. She ends up catching him on an odd quest, forcing him to tell her the truth about why he is in town, and why the haunted town does not scare him. Cadence and Grey become partners on a mission to solve Grey's mystery as well as rid the town of the supernatural.
Cadence was an odd character. At times she was so mature and straightforward, but at other times she whined and complained like a young child. I do not know if I really liked her or not. Also, at times she complained about how her best friend was so clingy and needy making unflattering comparisons, and then she spoke of how loyal she was. Make up your mind, she either completely annoys you or she is a great friend. I did not like the back and forth over her emotions that she had over almost all the side characters.
Grey on the other hand I liked. He was the typical love interest in teen books, where he wanted to protect the girl he liked. I had a small problem with their romance because Cadence decided he must like her and then all of a sudden they dated even though she did not seem to have feeling for him besides attraction. I did enjoy the romance between her best friend and love interest though, it added another layer to character development.
The ending of the book was so abrupt. The story was in the middle of an important event occurring that changes everything for the characters, and then it is over. I was really surprised at the lack of an actual conclusion. I guess that is a way to get the reader to come back to see how the book will work out. I will most likely read the next book just to get some sort of closure.
I received this book from the publishers in exchange for my honest review.

As a big fan of all sorts within the paranormal genre I can honestly say it is rare to find something you can call truly original but "Buried" is one of them.

The story is set in the small town of Fane's Cove where paranormal is normal and outsiders don't last long before the abnormal drives them away. So when Grey Addison shows up in Fane's Cove and settles in for what looks like for good, lifetime resident Cadence McKenna is surprised that she is the only one who finds this odd. Determined to find out the mystery of Grey Addison Cadence finds herself drawn into Grey's own search for the answer to the hauntings his family has endured for generations. What the two discover might be the answer to Grey's problems as well as the paranormal hold on the town.
Drawing from America's own rich paranormal history and legend's "Buried" truly brings something new to the paranormal genre. The writing is contemporary and rich and flows well throughout the whole story. With elements of mystery, the paranormal, and romance the overall story is wonderfully full without being overloaded and leaves the reader eager for the next book in the promised trilogy.

The story is original, the writing is superb, and the author has a fresh but comfortable voice that I'm sure will become a favorite of many readers to come. A wonderful first book from a wonderful new author.

Fane's Cove is a strange town. There are all kinds of paranormal happenings in the town and the people just accept them. In fact, the same people have lived in the town forever; families don't seem to leave Fane's Cove. Cae is part of one of those families and she has a gift. She has a bit of the sight passed down from her grandma. Gray Addison is an anomaly. His family has moved to Fane's Cove. Cae is drawn to Gray and his quest to find his family history. His family is from Fane's Cove, but all records of them have been lost. Cae and Gray uncover a buried secret about Jack Addison, Gray's ancestor, and his connection to the town and its strange history.

This was a fun story. I like the paranormal/ghost/demon aspect of the book, but I was especially intrigued by the hidden history of the town. I enjoyed Cae and Gray's quest to discover his family history. I also enjoyed their relationship; starts off antagonistic, becomes flirty, develops into something more. My only quibble with the book was the ending. I really hate cliffhangers, especially huge cliffhangers like this one, but it does open the book up for a series.

I received a copy of this book on Netgalley.com.

This was a good read.

It was well-written and an original YA urban fantasy. The plot keeps you from putting the book down and has many twists and turns to keep you interested in reading further.

The story is about a town with mysterious ongoings and two teens get mixed up right in the middle of it. Cadence has a supernatural gift that she's inherited from her mothers side of the family. Grey, is new to town and he's on a hunt to figure out what is going on with his families history. As they team up to figure out what's going on in the town and how Grey's family is involved they soon discover their attraction for one another and a whole lot more.

Overall good book and I hope to see a sequel to it.

If you are looking for a fun and entertaining read, then you must pick-up Gerilyn Marin's 'Buried!' This story transports you to a town where there's never a dull moment; a perfect setting for the mysterious and the unknown..and for Cadence's and Grey's sleuthing into the 'what the heck is going on here?!' I enjoyed the twists and turns as the author creates an exciting labyrinth of 'what's next?' and 'oh my goodness that's insane!' You'll see what I mean when you read it. There are stretches of scenes to get past--perhaps to build momentum, but once you reach the top of the hill, get ready for it!!! Make this one of your summer reads!!

Buried is such a fantastic book. I read it in less than a day. I found the plot to be unique and enjoyable. I would love to read more about the outcomes from this book, so I hope there is a book 2 coming. I was shocked with the ending. I could not believe what happened to Cae. But it was so sweet how Grey was supportive all the way to the end. Curious as to what I speak of, well get the book, you’ll love it. One of my fav saying in the book is where she said her mom has the ninja skills of a drunken clown… too funny!

This book was quite different from anything I've read, but I truly loved it and can say I am hooked and will continue reading the series to see what happens next. I think the main fact about this story from the books I've read it seems really original, nothing like I've read before, and I love paranormal books. There's paranormal, romance, history, mystery and so much more wrapped up in this book that you won't expect. Thank you Gerilyn Marin for sharing this great book with us and I cannot wait to read more from you in the future.

I wasn't gripped by the beginning, and really this hasn't been my favorite read this year, but it was still decent. Cadence was a mostly interesting character, and the mystery of Grey's family and Fane's Cove was pretty cool, but it felt a bit slow. The sequel should be better, based solely on where this one ended.

Buried is a spooky and fun paranormal adventure set in a town where the residents have learned to ignore the occasional supernatural happenings, but no outsiders stay for long. Except for the strange new boy at school, Grey Addison. Cadence is determined to find out why he isn’t perturbed by the supernatural activity and makes up an excuse to talk to him. The result is that they team up to solve a mystery involving his ancestors and the town’s own strangely absent history.

This was an engaging read that kept me turning the pages. I liked the two lead characters and the unfolding mystery, and the plot moves at just the right pace. Cadence’s narrative voice is perfect for a YA story, spunky and independent, and the budding romance thankfully doesn’t get in the way of the plot as is the case with some other YA paranormal books I’ve read. Original and fun!

This was a merely ok. It started off alright, it was original and there was a mystery that needed to be solved so it piqued my interest for a while but towards the end it was drastically boring. The little romance that was contained in the book was cheesy and predictable. The ending was not exciting and the story didn't have enough action or adventure. It was bland.

Loved this first book, though I'm REALLY hoping a sequel comes soon, there's still a lot to discover about the town and what happens to Caedence. The chemistry between her and Grey is right on point and the little bits are sarcasm and steamy flirtation from Grey are fantastic.
