Ένα βιβλίο που το στήσιμο της πλοκής και η αφήγηση, μου θύμισε έντονα Σερλοκ Χολμς, κι ας εκτυλίσσεται στα τέλη του 1400, που ουδεμία σχέση έχει με τον Χολμς χρονικά. Η αφήγηση σε πρώτο πρόσωπο από τον ήρωα Ρογήρο είχε κάτι από την ευγένεια που διηγείται τις περιπέτειες του Σέρλοκ, ο πιστός του φίλος δρ. Γουάτσον. Όπως επίσης, το μυστήριο δεν έχει την αγωνία και την ανατριχίλα των σύγχρονων μας βιβλίων μυστηρίου, αλλά την ανάλαφρη ευχαρίστηση που προκαλεί ένα καλό αίνιγμα, χαρακτηριστικό των βιβλίων του περασμένου αιώνα. Η ιστορία μπλέκει αγαπημένους θρύλους της Αγγλίας, τον βασιλιά Αρθούρο, το ιερό δισκοπότηρο κ.α. και όλα αυτά μπλεγμένα σε ένα μεσαιωνικό αγροτικό τοπίο, που εγώ αγαπώ ιδιαίτερα. Μου άρεσε πολύ, αν κ η απογοήτευση μου είναι αρκετά μεγάλη, από την ώρα που έμαθα ότι η σειρά βιβλίων Roger the Chapman είναι εξαντλημένη στην Ελλάδα. Σνιφ…

Ένα ακόμα βιβλίο του Ρογήρου του Γυρολόγου και το δεύτερο της σειράς που διαβάζω.
Ο Ρογήρος πρέπει να συνοδεύσει την νεαρή Καικιλία στο σπίτι της θείας της όπου την περιμένει μια συμφωνία για γάμο με τον ξαδερφό της. Ο ξάδερφος έπρεπε να έχει εμφανιστεί για να την συνοδεύσει ο ίδιος αλλά δεν ήρθε ποτέ. Φτάνοντας εκεί ο Ρογήρος καλείται να εξιχνιάσει το μυστήριο της εξαφάνισης του πρώτου ξαδέρφου και στην συνέχεια και του δευτέρου που χάνεται επίσης. Μια περίεργη ιστορία, στην οποία εμπλέκεται ένα αρχαίο χειρόγραφο.
Το βιβλίο διαβάζεται εύκολα και κυλάει. Μου φάνηκε πιο καλό από το δεύτερο βιβλίο της σειράς που διάβασα πριν από λίγο καιρό. Παρόλα αυτά όμως νομίζω πως η επιμέλεια του βιβλίου θα μπορούσε να είναι καλύτερη. Ο Αρθούρος και η Γκουίνεβιρ ή Γκουινεβιρινεβιρ ή κάτι άλλο. Παρακαλώ αποφασίστε πώς θα την γράψετε και κατά προτίμηση επιλέξτε το σωστό. Επίσης ορισμένα σημεία της μετάφρασης μου προκάλεσαν γέλια. "Γύρισε γύρω από τα τακούνια της" φαντάζομαι πως είναι η ακριβής μετάφραση του "turned around her heels" αλλά δεν ξέρω κατά πόσο η χρήση του στα ελληνικά ευσταθεί. Ακριβώς γι'αυτό τον λόγο συνήθως προτιμώ τις πρωτοτυπες εκδόσεις και όχι μεταφράσεις...

Το πρώτο που διάβασα της Sedley και μου άρεσε πολύ! Είναι από το είδος των μυθιστορημάτων που αγαπώ ιδιαιτέρως, όπως αυτά του P.J. Sansom, της Ellis Peters, της Susanna Gregory! Στην αρχή σε ξενίζουν οι λετομέρειες για την πολιτική κατάσταση αλλά όταν το συνηθίσεις είναι κάτι που σε βάζει καλύτερα στην πλοκή. Λίγο αργό αρχικά αλλά μετά τη μέση γίνεται πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρον.

Fun, atmospheric series about Roger Chapman, a peddler who also acts as a sometimes spy for the Duke of Glouster. Set in mideval England, the author brings a feel of authenticity to her descriptions of the way folks lived in those times. It's a nice escape from reality, but definitely makes you appreciate what we have today.

Another in this excellent series starring Roger the Chapman, a wandering ex-novice priest now a peddler with a talent for unraveling mysteries, this novel involves the unnatural disappearance of two brothers. The novel skirts the supernatural genre of da vinci's code, complete with an ancient manuscript that may or may not hint at a treasure brought to Glastonbury by Joseph of Arimathea.

All of Roger the Chapman's skills at finding out the truth are needed to solve this mystery. A young man disappears into thin air and then his younger brother also disappears leaving Roger at a loss to understand their disappearances - and wondering about the safety of his own life.

Another good one fromSedley as she adds to her Roger the Chapman series of mysteries. While not as strong an outing as some of her titles, Roger, his adventures and his time in history continue to entertain, educate and surprise.

A fun mystery, but I'll admit it only made 4 stars instead of 3 because it takes place wholly in the Bristol-Bath-Glastonbury area, where I will be traveling soon and where I was intentionally researching. For that purpose, it was quite good.

"Το καλοκαίρι που πέρασε ήταν ζεστό, με παρατεταμένα διαστήματα θαυμάσιου καιρού που ξόρκιζαν τις πιο κρύες, γκρίζες ημέρες του αγέρα και της βροχής." Διαβάζοντας αυτές τις πρώτες φράσεις του βιβλίου, ήξερα πως έπρεπε να το διαβάσω το φθινόπωρο αν και μπορεί κάλλιστα να διαβαστεί και νωρίτερα αφού ο καιρός είναι ζεστός στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του και χωρίς πολλές βροχές. Ενδιαφέρον, σε ταξιδεύει στον αγγλικό μεσαίωνα με μια αύρα μυστηρίου λόγω του ότι είναι αστυνομικό στην ουσία - το μόνο είδος βιβλίου που μπορεί πλέον να με βγάλει από τα θρησκευτικά και επιστημονικά βιβλία που διαβάζω συνήθως και που δεν υπάρχουν στο goodreads! Θα το χαρακτήριζα αρκετά καλό αν και έχανε λίγο από τη μετάφραση ("o" Μόργκαν Λε Φέυ;; Really?!?) και είναι από τα ελάχιστα λογοτεχνικά βιβλία που διαβάζω τα τελευταία χρόνια στα ελληνικά. Ψηφίζω αγγλικά με πάθος!!
ΥΓ. Βρήκα και το κατάλληλο βιβλίο για τον μεσαιωνικό Signum σελιδοδείκτη μου με το μεσαιωνικό οικόσημο και την "Άνοιξη" του Μποτιτσέλι που είχα αγοράσει από τη Φλωρεντία, την απόλυτη μεσαιωνική πόλη!!!

#7 in the 13th Century English Roger the Chapman mystery series. It is 1522 and 70 year old Roger is recounting his life starting with leaving the life of a monk at Glastonbury at age 19 in 1471, to set off into the world as a wandering peddler or chapman and finds his true calling in solving mysteries.
August, 1476, and Roger is returning home to Bristol after a nice summer's peddling. He is sidetracked by a request from his duke to escort a bride en route to her betrothed in Glastonbury where they discover that the groom has recently disappeared. Roger offers to stay and find out what happened. He links the disappearances to the discovery of an ancient scroll written in a strange language that the groom thought was the secret to something valuable. Then a few days later, the groom's younger brother also disappears.

A complex man with many talents!
This is first Roger the Chapman book I’ve read, but it will not be the last! Though Roger appears to be but a simple peddler, he is so much more! A man of letters & great curiosity, his talent for resolving mysteries is recognized by the noble houses of his land. He has a well developed sense of justice, along with great powers of discernment. He is like a bulldog when faced with a crime or mystery. He won’t rest until he ferrets out the truth! Truly, a man of many talents.

somehow I got out of order again. I haven't read anything from this series in a while, and it was some nice light reading for a busy semester. I didn't get into the mystery until the very end - the resolution was pretty good. there weren't any really compelling characters. the historical details are neat to read about.

Enjoyable. The character of Roger is a good one, with a sense of continuity and consistency. The side characters are well drawn and believable. The mystery itself is not incredibly compelling, I admit.

Another fantastic
Tale of Roger the Chapman. He solves the mystery of what happened to two brothers that mysteriously disappeared and their family fear it was Black Magic. Characters are well integrated into story and some history of the Celts, also.

Δεν είναι κανένα αριστούργημα της λογοτεχνίας αλλά κανει ακριβώς αυτό που υπόσχεται (όπως ολα της σειράς άλλωστε). Διαβάζεται πολύ ευχάριστα (παρότι η μετάφραση θα μπορούσε να είναι πιο προσεγμένη) και είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέρον.

When The Brothers of Glastonbury came to my attention as a possible book to review, I confess I was predisposed to like it. The concept of a medieval mystery set in the heart of "King Arthur country" sans the usual Arthurian references sounded refreshingly unique, and I looked forward to the read.
Memo to Self: quit judging a book by its jacket blurb!
Happenstance pulls Roger the Chapman, peddler by trade and sleuth by hobby, into investigating the disappearance of a young woman's betrothed. Rumors of the devil and black magic abound, to the dismay of the bridegroom's widowed mother. The missing groom Peter's avid reading and book collecting habits do nothing to alleviate matters, since the townsfolk fear that such questionable activities lead to nothing but trouble.
Indeed, trouble quickly finds Roger, plunging him into battle on several fronts. While searching for clues to Peter's whereabouts, Roger must wring information from terrified or otherwise uncooperative neighbors, perform rumor control to spare the family's reputation, stave off the advances of Cicely, Peter's hormone-ruled fiancee, and quell the urge to simply pack up and go home.
The intrepid sleuth overcomes the latter struggle upon discovery of Peter's most prized possession, a 1000-year-old parchment written in Ogham (think ancient barcode) that poses a riddle regarding the final hiding place of the Holy Grail. When Roger surmises that Peter's quest for this relic of relics may have resulted in his disappearance, his personal quest for answers takes a significant leap forward -- straight into the heart of danger.
There. The secret's out, and I feel much better now.
If you enjoy reading anything connected with King Arthur and the Grail Quest -- and if you can tolerate the irritating Cicely and a first-person narrative that gives Roger an almost Godlike omniscience, then you can do a lot worse than read The Brothers of Glastonbury. Sedley did her homework and creates a "lived in" medieval atmosphere where, thankfully, you won't find one jot of gratuitous profanity, sex or violence.
However, just once it would be nice to read a novel set in England's mysterious Somerset region without the author relying upon Arthurian-based plot devices. For me, that would feel like a real vacation.

Interesting story, it wasn't as predictable as some mysteries, so that was nice. It was also fun to read a "who done it" set during the midieval period.
My biggest complaint is that for some reason I kept thinking it read like a Nancy Drew, which is strange because I haven't read a Nancy Drew in a million years. But I might look for more in this series if I'm hard up for something to read.

Set in the medieval times of England. Roger is asked to accompany a woman to her fiancés house in time for the wedding. When he arrives, he discovers that the groom is missing. Shortly thereafter the other brother goes missing. Roger Chapman decides to help the mother figure out what has happened to her sons. In the process, he connects the disappearance to an old manuscript which was written in the old Celtic ongram writing.

Roger is involved in solving the mysterious disappearance of two brothers who had found a document purporting to describe the hidden burial spot of the Holy Grail. They, and Roger, in actuality stumble into a thieves' lair.

Thank God, I bought this book on a book bazaar!!! I did not spend too much money on that, otherwise that would be a great waste...One of the worst books I have read. Very boring, very superficial, slow plot pace. Everything negative...
