KACEY VANDERKARR has a penchant for fantasy and frequently listens to the voices in her head—most of whom are teenagers. Her favorite place to write is an old salon chair in her kitchen, with coffee in one hand and adoring cats sprawled across her arms. She prefers her music loud and her skeptics quiet. When she’s not writing, Kacey coaches winterguard, works as a sonographer, and hangs out with other weirdos like her at the Flint Area Writer’s club. In addition to her novels, The Reflection Pond Series, Antithesis, and The Stone Series, Kacey’s short fiction is featured in Sucker Literary Vol III, Ember: A Journal of Luminous Things, and Out of the Green: Tales from Fairyland.
Liam doesn’t care that I only have one arm . He actually likes my red hair and freckles. I might forgive him for kidnapping me .

I want this book, I crave it, I need it. It's sounds so creepy and deliciuosly mysterious. Person who wrote that blurb just won me over with few sentences!! Who's fangirling with me??
This book is amazing. There are twists and turns, comedy, drama and suspense. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will love how it ends. Trust me it is a must read!!!
Antithesis is the first novel by indie author Kacey Vanderkarr, and is the second book of hers that I have read. She has become one of my favorite authors, and has one of the best, most intriguing covers I’ve seen in a long time.

My Review: I just want to say, I loved this book. It’s nonstop action from page one, Gavyn is awesome and Liam is hotter than a tin roof in august. Nothing got done yesterday, because I had to read this book.
Gavyn has one arm, and while it’s irritating and an inconvenience, she just gets on with her life. Her wild red hair is more of a problem in her eyes. Liam is exactly the egotistical badboy you don’t want your daughter to date, much less travel around with for months on end, alone. Things do get hot and steamy between them, but this is technically a YA sci-fi/romance.
The story is fast paced. Liam and Gavyn race through many different dimensions, and in each one they must deal with radically different versions of themselves, and Gavyn’s best friends, Lena and Demetri. Some versions are out to kill them, and some versions must die.
Vanderkarr has done her homework on dimensional theories, and all of her plot twists, theories, and fictional science have a genuine, plausible feel to them. She never loses control of the plot, and it remains good science fiction from cover to cover.
This was an excellent read. Now I’m practically hopping from foot to foot, looking forward to her next release, every bit as much as I am the next Tad Williams book.
I finished Kacey Vanderkarr's Antithesis, and I loved it! It is a classic fantasy romance with unique twists. The plot of the book is distinctive but not overwhelming. The character development is fantastic and the many worlds keep you engrossed and engaged without confusing or loosing you. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially YA fantasy romance enthusiasts. Also Kacey has another book Reflection Pond that everyone should check out. I haven't gotten a chance to read it but I know it is just as fantastic.
When I read the description, I was like WTH is going on, but after reading the excerpt a couple of days ago this book keeps popping into my head. I really loved the protagonists voice and I'm so intrigued by what this story might be about. Cannot wait!! GIVE ME.
Antithesis was a new kind of read for me-- I'm honestly not into science fiction, but this one just sounded so good that I couldn't resist. The idea of alternate realities is something that I've puzzled on and thought about for days on end, to tell you the truth. Just the idea that someone out there who's the same as me but somehow different just...astounds me.
So anyway, having jumped at the chance to read this, I was hesitant about not liking it. But it turns out that I was worrying about all of the wrong things, because I actually did like it!
Gavyn turned out to be a character that I could strangely relate to. I mean, obviously I have two arms and a girl's name instead of a boy's, but I related to her in a totally different way. I know what it's like to be weird. And for all intents and purposes, hey, Gavyn is weird. But she's also totally fun and awesome and sarcastic. I would totally be friends with her, and her friends Drake and Lena. They seemed like a cool trio.
But back to the alternate realities thing: how weird would it be to meet yourself? Because Gavyn does. A couple of times, actually. And I just can't get over how strange that would just, you know, be. I think that I would seriously freak out. Then, to make things more confusing, I started wondering how it is that all Gavyn's are friends with Lena's and Drake's. Isn't there some sort of paradox or something that should be against that? Statistically speaking, at least one of the Gavyn's never would have me Lena and Drake. Does that make sense, or am I just crazy rambling?
But back to the point: she met herself, and yet when she refers to the other Gavyn's as Gavyn, well, I never got confused. Which I honestly think should count for a heck of a lot. Just like the fact that Liam, well, seems to see the real Gavyn. I think that should count for a lot too. It seems like not very many people see her, and she deserves to be seen for who she is, because she totally kicks ass. Even if she does puke afterwards.
All in all, Antithesis was a fun, philosophically challenging read for me. I can't believe how weird that just sounded, but it's true.
First thing, I just knew that I would like this book after reading the synopsis. After reading it once, I decided that it was worth the risk. After reading it twice, I said go for it. That was it! No third times the charm here.
So if we go by reading the synopsis, most people would be thrown off. I'm all for trying to figure out what's going on.
Alternate realities? I'm usually not a fan because I seem to not be able to keep up with everything. I did, however, enjoy this. I think it has to do with the main character.
Gavyn is why I kept reading. She has a bit of a sarcastic and snarky mind, which I found highly amusing. She's also not your typical MC in a YA book. She has red hair, freckles, and abnormalities that you don't usually get from YA books. Genius idea if you ask me. Had she been this "perfect" character, I probably would have stopped halfway through.
Different realities with lots going on. If you love YA Fantasy/Paranormal/Sci-fi/Romance, then this is definitely the book for you.
Antithesis was a thrilling, fast-paced rollick through parallel dimensions that I couldn't put down.
First things first, this is great, high-concept story with unique twists and a fabulous premise. The main character, Gavyn, is a sweet, funny girl swept into alternative realities when a gorgeous stranger comes to "rescue her" from one of her other selves. Liam is a cocky, hilarious love interest with suprising layers of hidden depth.
I love the idea of parallel realities and the way these two characters ignite the pages in this unpredictable, fun adventure for young adults.
This was a really fun book to read. I finished it quickly and loved it!
The story got started quickly, and then there was hardly a dull moment. But I was constantly confused. It took forever for me to finally figure out what was really going on, as far as the real conflict and why Liam and Gavyn were running. That got a little frustrating at times, but if you like to guess what's going on before you find out, it's fun.
It was the kind of book that kept me thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading it, and even after I finished the book.
I'm really curious about this book...because I can't make ass from elbow of the synopsis, and yeah okay I admit it was the cover that drew me in....but am I the only one who realizes that Gavyn is a boy name? Is it a boy in love with another boy, or a girl with a boy name in love with a boy?!
Antithesis didn't turn out the way I'd thought it would. That blurb is so vague, so misleading, that my jaw dropped when I found that my theory about this book couldn't be farther from the truth. And if you're wondering, I'd assumed this book was psychological, that Gavyn was crazy. She wasn't.
Now, before you stick around any longer, I'll tell you that I plan to be as vague as possible in this review and keep the air of secrecy that the blurb-writer intended. Let the book surprise you.
The plot kicked off nicely right in the first chapter, and my brain was just like "WTF is happening?!" Like I said, utterly wrong theory. The sci-fi element *hint hint* was a big surprise, and one reason why I really enjoyed Antithesis was because I haven't read lots of books about said sci-fi element. I do believe it's becoming quite the crazy lately...
Gavyn was a likable character. Her handicap made her unique, not bitter. She was actually quite the normal teenager with worries, insecurities, raging hormones, and a ridiculous bucket list. But one thing I disliked about her was how she constantly ranted about her red hair as if it was a handicap like her one-armed-ness. I'd love to have red hair!
What is it with fictional guys named Liam? Each one I've read so far have all been smart, hot, and a little bit naughty—written to make me insane, I think. But Liam's not as memorable as his relationship with Gavyn. It's easy to find swoon-worthy boys in books, but swoon-worthy couples? Nuh-uh. These two were so hilarious and awkward yet still sexy and sweet together. I may have snorted and giggled a lot.
Gavyn and Liam's crazy adventure made for a fast-paced, unputdownable read. I have to admit that the climax felt like a cop-out, but the ending sure has me up for a sequel if there'll be one!
MY FAVORITE PART is the shower scene! Sweet baby Jesus (hmm, JLA reference?).
Okay, how many of you are like, "What?" "Huh?" "Uhhhh..." That was exactly my reaction at first sight too. When i first read the synopsis, I was like, "Ummm...okay? So this is about Gavyn who has red hair and one arm..." Let me tell you though, Antithesis by Kacey Vanderkarr is so much more than this synopsis. In fact, that vagueness is what initially drew me in. I had to know more. So on one hand this was a stroke of genius for our YA world where by reading a back cover you can almost guess (sometimes with accuracy) where the story is going and how it will end. I mean really, what's the point of a story like that? I do hope that people don't pass up this book because of the simplistic blurb...but their loss I suppose!
Without giving too much away let me just tell you that Vanderkarr does a great job building the characters, the settings, the adrenaline and the anticipation. I personally love the banter between Gavyn and Liam as their journey unfolds. Gavyn is such a sassy-pants, strong but cynical girl with a major chip on her shoulder (who wouldn't if you grew up a self proclaimed frizzy "ginger" with one arm). As far as Gavyn, he clearly has a secret that he's hiding with his sarcasm and charm. That bad boy/knight-in-shining-armor/I-have-a-secret thing goes a long way! As far as the plot and storyline, let me just say that this paranormal-romance will have you wondering what ripples are caused by your small everyday actions.
If you're looking for a mind-bending read, add Antithesis to your e-reader and prepare yourself. Filled with unexpected twists and turns and swoon-worthy moments Antithesis is unlike the other "YA sci-fi romances" you will find out there. Antithesis will take you on a high-octane ride that will have you guessing until the very end!
We first meet Gavyn on a snow day. A day where you don’t have to do anything but curl under your covers. Gavyn’s peace is disturbed when she hears thumps outside her door. Soon a hot guy comes bursting through the door and transports her to another world. Gavyn immediately thins she is dreaming. But, this is no dream. Liam, the hot guy, begins to explain to Gavyn about multiple worlds with multiple Gavyn’s and multiple Liam’s. When Gavyn shifts from these worlds while being chased she begins to discover she is only Gavyn with one arm. As Gavyn and Liam travel more worlds they become closer and begin to fall in love. When they finally get to the destination that has caused all the trouble in most of the worlds it looks hopeless for all involved. When all hope seems lost the unexpected happens and Gavyn’s already upside down world becomes even more so. In the end will Gavyn find her way back to her world and can she continue on when she is so different?
This was a wonderfully unique story. It was inventive and I loved the dimensions the Kacey Vanderkarr brings to both the story and her characters. This is definitely a story that draws you in and won’t let you go. The story is fast paced and doesn’t slow down until you get to the end. The love story between Gavyn and Liam is also very cute and a lovely addition. Gavyn’s character is one of a kind. She is born handicapped yet is functional. Though clearly at the beginning her self-esteem is low it truly begins to grow and brings a new depth to her character. I think Gavyn’s character alone could make this a must read but it ends up being just one piece in a spectacular story. I would highly recommend this book for all those of you who like a unique story in a young adult genre.
3.5 First of all, let me just say that I love, love, love characters with physical or mental limitations. I am tired of PERFECT characters who are just sooo pretty and witty. I mean, I love em, but sometimes I want to read about a different character besides the strong willed gorgeous brunette with long, beautiful hair. You know the theme. Anyway, I love that and the.. um.. world she creates. ;) I am trying to do this without spoiling it for anyone who wants to read the book.
Gavyn is dorky and not very confident. She was born with only one arm which is a little hard on her sometimes. Her personality was pretty cute.
Liam is sort of a cocky mess. He made me laugh sometimes and for that, he is okay with me.
Like I stated previously, I love the idea of the book. By the way... I was a little thrown off with the repetitive "my name is Gavyn" thing going on in the description, but totally mystified by the whole... I dunno.. KILLING THE FATHER/ ONE ARM thing. Okay, that is more than one thing and cannot really be joined with a slash, but I'm not editing it. *pouts* Also.... again, the description... eh. Don't be put off by it. It is very.. vague. But I guess that helps draw you in. I mean, it did get me to sign on for the tour- after all. *Shrug* Maybe I am just over-thinking it.
Also... just...... *sigh* just a cool story with interesting concepts. I am running out of words here. lol. I have never read anything like it (well, I read one book with a SORT of similar-ish thingy going on, but it was not written as well as this one. But I digress.) (:
Whoever wrote the back copy is very good. Also very misleading.
The heroine: Gawky. Impossible, untamable red hair. Awkwardness of the 'I carried a watermelon' sort. One arm. (The missing arm, incidentally, makes for a nice plot point -- it puts Gavyn in a unique position, but perhaps not in the way you'd expect.) Gets sick at the sight of violence. Does what she has to anyway.
The hero: Incapable of a straight answer. Somewhat dirty mind. Very much the bad boy. Not my type at all. Fans of Cassandra Claire are likely to love this guy.
The plot: Not the book's strongest point. In places it reminds me of Charmed Life -- in terms of world-building, anyway -- but the follow-through falls short. It's the end of the book before Gavyn really has any idea why Liam targeted her as useful, and meanwhile there's not really anything she can do, except run. And kill Nevin a few times. And run.
In terms of concept for a universe, this is fun. I liked the characterization. I loved that the cover didn't depict Gavyn's hair as gently waving curls. It's a testament to the author's care that it was always clear which character was which. (That last comment will make a lot more sense if you read the book...) My rating speaks largely to the plot -- that, compelling characters or no, their options were awfully limited. Still, a solid debut.
I received a free copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway.
3.5 stars this was an interesting read. I liked the characters especially Gavin. Gavin by the way is not a girls name. The world building was good, the love building was well done. The concept off alternate worlds is not new but I liked the way the plot and characters were woven in to a great read. Gavin is having a very nice nap on a snow day when she wakes up because somebody is making a lot off noise in her house, to be specific behind her door. Maybe it's a burglar? no, it's just Liam who's hot by the way. And Liam saves her and transfers her to a different house. On the run they have a lot off fights, are thrown in some nasty situations and fall in love. Liam can be an Ass but he's also sweet. Gavin is though as nails and wears her heart on her tong. These was a very nice start to 2014. I hope to see more books from this writer. Love the cover.
I just finished reading this again after 6 years still loved it changing review to 4 stars.
I really liked and would recommend this book! The ideas and world created are very unique and fascinating. The characters are kind of blah and Liam's cockiness got on my nerves. Their romance was very young and not something I could relate too. I did have an appreciation for the way the author included the desperate lust most teenagers feel, but kept the characters responsible within their desires. I have an appreciation for the impact her characters can make on young adults.
The story kind of drug on and the book itself seemed young in the sense of the author's experience, but showed the incredible potential we know the author to have in the Reflection Pond series. I'm glad I read this book second to that because I developed a deep appreciation for how far the author has come.
I will always keep my eye out for anything written by this author as she has yet to disappoint me!!
I got this book at the release party and finally had a chance to read it. I was a bit worried at first that I wouldn't like it, it's not what I normally pick up to read. To be fair the story started off a little slow (I had an advantage I knew what it was about so the book didn't throw me off like it did for most people). I loved the way each reality was shown and how you got to even see the people from those other realities. That was cool. It took me about five chapters in to really get pulled in but when I did get pulled in I was hooked. I wanted to find out more about what was going on and I wanted to see how it ended. Overall, I think it's defiantly something to pick up and read.
I found myself wrapped up in Antithesis! The book was well written with interesting ideas and a little romance sprinkled in. It kept me guessing until the end, and wondering about my own opposite. I started this book Sunday night, and had a hard time putting it down to get to work on time. I found myself daydreaming about what was to come and couldn't wait to get home to finish it! Great book, awesome story and definitely recommend!
When I read books it usually takes me about a month to finish them, this book took me 2 days because I could not put it down! It was soo good! Everything in it kept me captivated for hours! It was one of the best books I've ever read! I love gavyn and and I really want Liam to be a real person! The characters are amazing and I love the whole concept of the book! It was extremely creative and just an all together amazing book! I loved it!
I am out of what I believe would be the 'target audience' and still found it amazing. It was written in a way that was easy to read and the story had a nice flow.
