I enjoyed working with the author (my Bestie) on this one. I have read it, listened to the plot spin out in Nan's head, and gotten to 'know' the characters. My teenaged granddaughter read the book, as did my father. Each had been told very little about the book in advance. My granddaughter loved that she could get a 'feel for who the players are' and my father enjoyed the 'quirky sense of humor that led to all sorts of mischief.'
Anyone looking for a book full of light hearted fun will love this book.

A young man that works for a senator gets sent on a fact-finding mission to the mainly unknown town of Misplaced Legends, Wyoming. This isn't a plum assignment for Lester, in fact it is a form of punishment for insulting the senator's wife. Once Lester gets to town, the young man finds there is much more to the town and its residents than he could have ever imagined.

This is a fairly lighthearted story. From the name of the town, you can easily guess what kind of residents it will have living there. From a diner run by a witch to a dragon as bank president, Lester finds all kinds of supposedly mythical creatures. While it would be natural to try and disbelieve this at first, Lester persists to the point that it starts to get tedious. For more than half the book, Lester is in denial despite being given hard evidence time and time again. Still, it was fun getting to meet so many of the town's colorful residents. Of course, this story is the proposed introduction for two different series to follow.

In the author's afterword, she asks that any typos that slipped through be overlooked. I am sorry, but I just can't do that. There is a definite need for another round of editing. Also, if you keep overlooking these things, they will never get better. I will overlook the occasional missed word ,awkward phrasing, missing comma or obvious typo but some of these do need to be addressed before the next installment.
There are multiple times that your is used for you're. Stop leaving those prepositions hanging, give them their noun and finish those phrases. Decide if different races, like Dwarf and Elf, are going to be capitalized or not and then be consistent. Also, nicknames like dear do not get capitalized. Were-creatures should either be a hyphenated or compound word (were-badger, werewolf). This is also true when describing something as -like (human-like, birdlike, etc). Watch out for compound words like standby and make sure they don't get broken into their parts.( This seems to be a growing problem in e-books. I blame programs that check and "correct" spelling.) This might seem like nitpicking to some, but when you are reading and are suddenly thrown out of the story by hitting one of these glitches, it just lessens the enjoyment. And no one wants that.

This is a lighthearted, fun story. It does get a little repetitive and predictable at times. There are some technical difficulties. But I would say it does show promise and would be worth reading later installments in both series, especially if the problems are addressed. I would say this is a 3.25 star story.
