All emotions and reactions in this volume are excessive and totally inaccurate and unrealistic... He sleeps for 3 days and everyone shuns him! Also in the beginning of the volume, he is so depressed for a guy that he just literally knew! Worst volume so far, it shows incredible naiveté by the writer.
The whole world now knows about Deadman Wonderland... how will it react? The art is as indecipherable as ever which makes understanding the plotting very difficult. I am calling it a day and DNF-ing the rest of the series. Rather spend my reading time reading something I enjoy. 3 out of 12, Two Stars from me. 2024 read
What's the word for it when a manga character is too stupid, weak, lazy, abrasive, and willfully ignorant to survive or progress in the story through anything less than the will of god (ie, the writer)? I spent some time googling, but didn't come up with anything. Most character types are defined for the women in manga, not the males. Or at least that's where the attention goes. Perhaps it is so common for the men to be pathetic that it just doesn't get a name?
That's where we are with this series, which was actually going pretty well. But now we have a mopey MC. A MC who wants to fight for "justice", which at the moment means letting a murderer continue to murder people... because he's an idiot. So his friend comes to help him... so he insults her, tells her he hates her (for zero reason that makes any sense), and he goes off to... no idea. This was an absolute garbage of a volume.
Hint, he doesn't get over anything.
I'll give you the overall synopsis. Spoilers, I guess. But it's crap, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
The first portion of this was fine, I suppose. Our MC's plot armor and lack of situational awareness are just so strong that any other considerations just seem unimportant.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
That ending made no fucking sense. So now that Ganta knows that Shiro is a Deadman, he wants nothing to do with her? Just because all the other Deadmen hate him? What a crock of shit. The only reason I'm giving this book 3 stars is because the battle scene between the Deadmen and the Ninben was epic. Ganta's branch of sin is devastating. I wonder how that'll work out for him in the future.
Why does these kind of manga/character has always to be like this?
The "I will push you away for your own good because it's dangerous" must be the most shitty, annoying, overused plot device i've ever seen in any piece of fiction.
deadman wonderland is one of the most interesting manga that I have had the pleasure of reading so far. this story is about Ganta igurashi a 14 year old boy who has had a run in with a being he called the red man. Who attacks him and his classmates which leaves Ganta as the sole survivor in the end, who tells them that he knows who the killer is but ends up falsely accused himself of doing the deed. Which lands him in a fully run maximum prison called dead man wonderland which was also open to the public as a carnavel tourist attraction.
in this volume Ganta is thrown into the prison's hold, after being caught he refused to give up the whereabouts or the reason for his friends from the scar chain gang escaping, a week passes, and he is released and sent back to his cell. still reeling from the death of his friend and scar chain leader Nagi,(or in this case Owl.) as he leaves. Mean while Tamaki(the prison's promoter) devises a sick twisted plan by announcing to the world that the dead men exist, while the prisoner health examination was going on, which make's the warden Makina suspicious wondering what Tamaki has up his sleeve by announcing to the world of the dead men and the carnaval of corpse's, so she devises her own little plan. mean while we return to Ganta who is now sitting in his cell with shiro who is sitting there trying to cheer him up but to no avail, that is until she seeks help from other dead men. while that is going on Ganta meets up with senji(i.e crow) and expresses his fears only to have senji turn around and give him some harsh cold hearted advice. Which I'm guessing doesn't quiet exactly sink in to his head at the moment?. then cutting to another area of the prison( the infirmary) where a new character prisoner 3733 Azami Mido is getting a check up, and a booster shot for some unknown reason. then afterwards she gets called to Warden Makina's office where she let's her in on her plans, and tells her about G ward and that she was the next test subject in a unknown experiment then hands her over a tracking device. then we cut to later that night where Ganta wakes up slightly in pain and decides to get up and take a walk out of his cell, while taking a walk out in the hall he notice's a light on in the kitchen and see's Shiro baking trying to make him a snack that would ultimately cheer him up. as he stood there watching her he worries about Shiro and then remembers what senji said to him hours earlier then quietly goes back to bed the next morning he then wakes up with Shiro sleeping on the floor beside the snacks she made and they both end up eating the snacks together. then down in the cafeteria one of the other prisoners complains about his arm being itchy where he got the booster shot, and at the same time we cut back to the infirmary where the doctor is looking at one of the syringes with a small partial of unknown substances in it. then a month later Tamaki is talking to one of his colleagues who is explaining that he can only do so much to keep their superior's quiet about the fact that Tamaki revealed to the world of the dead men's existence and then he asks Tamaki what is so funny and Tamaki tells him that he would find out at the next press conference they were having afterwards Makina finds out that G ward is open and the deadmen are out side. while outside Ganta be friends Azami which is soon lived because she ends up going back to the infirmary and vanishing which worries Ganta then later on Shiro and Ganta train with Senji which btw this is where Shiro also finds out that she to is a dead man but no one notice's while watching another of Tamaki's sick idea over the T.V screen where he tell's the world once again about the dead men and how they fight every night in what they call the carnavel of corpse then after that he introduce's the existence of the fake Dead men known to everyone as The Ninben. after the showing we return back to the infirmary to see the ninben sitting in a chair shivering and the doctor walks up and removes their mask revealing Azami...
((this is an update slightly condensed so it might look a bit weird might come back and fix it again one day))
So apparently they’re all still inside the prison, for some reason? I’m not really sure why? Because I thought they were getting out? What's wrong with them?
And then the prison spins the truth around to make the deadmen look horrible (of course, though not actually hard to do), and then makes the fights even more horrible and publicized.
Everything’s just horrible in this series. It's just terrible. I've resigned myself to it.
It’s revealed that Ganta is even more powerful than everyone realized, of course. And then he’s a huge jerk to Shiro for no reason, isolating himself even more, and now I really hate him. Ganta’s just undeserving of Shiro’s affection.
Everything is just going bad now, for everyone. (Was it ever going good?) All the deadmen are screwed. Ganta is a jerk and I’m not surprised that everyone turned on him, but I have no idea what he’s going to do next. I feel bad for Shiro, but don’t know how her revealing is going to go.
The next one should be horrible in a good-ish way, I’m sure, like always.
Hey, we're getting back to the actual carnival corpse stuff and they're sort-of, kind-of acting like they're prisoners again. Woohoo!
This book was okay. Ganta is trying to get more comfortable with his place as a Deadman, but isn't finding it easy. Meanwhile on the outside, people are starting to get close to the truth and so the directors get out ahead of the issue. Which means - back to the cage fights!
This book would be higher on my rankings but for Ganta. He makes a couple big mistakes (well, sort of) in this book. One I'm not sure he could help, and I understand why it happened, plus it added stakes and tension and all that sort of awesome stuff. But the second... ugh. It didn't really make good sense, even if you can justify it. It really ended the book on a sour note for me.
The first half of the volume was hilarious! We meet Toto which is kinda crazily cute.. There was some funny moments, sweet friendship between Ganta and Shiro. .but then.. Onto the next part everything went down.. Newly made deadmen fighted Ganta's squad...Ganta did something which made a huge destruction and killed many of deadmen. . While everyone picked on him, Shiro came to help him but when he heard that Shiro is also a deadman he said her that he hate her. God! Ganta, you better have a reason for this stupidity or I'm gonna kill you! PS: so Ganta couldn't escape the prison with Scar Chain team?
The series needs to be finished.... Up to chapter 51 is out and I'm pulling out my arm hair here waiting for more.... I NEED MORE.... so good.... It's got creative, original everything and an amazing story to drive it all with characters you'll fall in love with
I did really enjoy the continuation of the story in this one however I did find it to be kind of a more depressing volume in an already gruesome read. The way it ended really upset me with how Ganta was treating Shiro and then how he is trying to help Azami but he really is just ruining everything else in the process even if he did manage to fully unlock his branch of sin. Also it is kind of a bummer to see that the whistle blower from the previous volume actually backfired, so Nagi’s death was truly meaningless. The director just ended up publicizing carnival corpse and the deadmen in general. This volume was just really sad because you could see how Nagi’s death was affecting Ganta and then how he chose he decisions from that point on. Personally would have liked to see it go a different direction.

Well, it'd seem I'm cutting through these collections the way prison-toilet wine cuts through intestinal lining. Time for some thoughts on another hilarious collection of lost moments from a horrific human research facility masquerading as a prison.
Y'know, with DEATH GAMES.
A lot more seemed to happen in this collection. The efforts of the Scar Chain rebellion have had some good results – the wider world now knows about Deadmen, which means our Humble Heroes get some time in the sun – which just about outweighs the human cost of getting the message out.
(Of course, I'm uncertain that a couple of minutes of Vitamin D are going to improve Ganta's take on life, but we'll see.)
Lead whinger Ganta comes out of solitary and feels blah. Yes, it's not a huge departure from his regular way of being in the world, but it's enough to make Shiro wonder if he'll ever be normal again. Cue one of the series' more tender moments, where the bodystockinged teen tries to help her childhood friend find his happiness again. It's a good reminder that there has been some work to put some kind of backstory in place with these two.
However we're also reminded that Ganta's power has ramifications. There's an excellent section where he's shunned by friend and foe alike due to an autonomous display of power. It's a bit heavy on the whole with great power comes great responsibility kind of thing, but it's good to see him in a situation where he's doing something other than being a truculent shit or a weepy loss.
Elsewhere, conspiracies roil. Security starts working against Tamaki, who has decided that unveiling Deadmen needs a bit more hot sauce: artificially-created Deadmen who will provide an ultraviolent example to justify his whole sadistic funfair. But who are these fake Deadmen? And why does Ganta think one looks familiar?
Naturally, the reader has the answers ahead of the characters, which makes for much satisfaction. The pace in this collection has picked up a bit more, and the slower groundwork of the previous volumes is beginning to pay off.
The writing has slowly improved and the developments and status quo changes in this volume allows the optimism of Ganta to be an enjoyable read. The series is still edgy but Ganta’s child-like unending optimism and care for friends continues to be challenged against the world that is continuously getting worse but he sticks to his morals. Now with the recent story developments I think that element is getting more interesting to read as friends flip-flop on being allies and enemies like Azami (who’s a Ninben) and Shiro (who’s the Wretched Egg). The power system is getting a bit more interesting to me too with Ganta’s new power-up that has a fun SMT3 Nocturne look to it, the Ninben’s gratuitously gory blood snakes, and Toto’s power copying. I still think the series is better when the battles are more framed as part of an adventure story than a battle shonen story if that makes sense and these fun powers keep the fights as a romp that's fun to read. After last volume the situation has both changed and not changed. On one hand there are still most of the Deadmen in DW and forced to fight (thanks to a wonderful scene of a forced bloodbath that also introduces the artificial Deadmen and the other amazing fight scene between many Deadmen against four Ninben that had wonderful atmosphere). On the other, the Deadmen are allowed above ground now allowing for some more locales. And since Scar Chain succeeded you get the other Deadmen appearing again which is nice since they weren't too bad though they don’t do much except Crow with the new characters Azami and Toto taking up a fair chunk of page space. I’m also glad Ganta is making mistakes. I can see some people not liking it but Kataoka seems to be trying to show Ganta as a confused middle schooler making rash choices in a new situations that’s challenges his more simpler morals he had as a kid. That makes sense considering he’s a middle schooler and it allows for drama I think it alright. Though the back-and-forth friends and then not friends deal with Ganta and Shiro or Ganta and the other Deadmen is getting a bit repetitive.

Deadman Wonderland takes a huge turn and this is the first volume that takes place after the anime abruptly ends (and to this day doesn't have a second season). Toto/Mockingbird who is a deadman with the ability to copy the Branches of sin of other people when he licks their blood has reappeared in Sector G after a lengthly absence (so much for being a supermax prison). He picks a fight with hot-head Crow to have an excuse to copy his crow claw without revealing his true plans.
Meanwhile, as typical shounen manga fanfare, the cute female supporting character Azami that is serving a prison sentence as a regular inmate for manslaughter has been injected with nanomachines that trigger an artifical Branch of Sin. While I think this is an interesting plot device because it explains part of the reason why Tamaki removes organs from Deadmen that lose in the carnival corpse battles, it just seems like he has all of this technology that conveniently moves the plot forward with the ever predictable increasingly powerful enemies and deadly battles.
Villains don't get developed, they all seem one dimensional albeit Ganta in an attempt to stop the deadmen from killing the unwitting Azami causes everyone to unanimously hate him. This volume plotwise is a sort of hit and miss but the artwork like always is great and I liked the character development of Ganta and the other Deadmen.
The going ons of the Wonderland have been leaked to the public, revealing the horrifying truth about the Deadmen bloodbenders held prisoner there. The wicked warden of the prison has hatched a plan to employ artificially created Deadmen to stage sacrificial crimes to show the public that his inhumane actions up to this point are completely justified. Unfortunately, this spells bad news for Ganta and his crew as the odds are stacked higher against them than ever before. After losing their leader, Scar Chain goes their separate ways for a while to recuperate and find out where they stand.
I like this volume. Ganta and Shiro have fought, split up and worked out their differences. Both of them have grown up quite a bit and their relationship feels more mature and nuanced than before.
Ganta gets some time to rethink things and calm down after losing some of his comrades in the last skirmish. News of the artificial Deadmen spreads throughout the prison, and once Ganta finds out that one of his close friends has been chosen as a test subject, things take a turn for the worse. Ganta and his crew are tasked with fighting his friend to the death or suffer the consequences, and it spells disaster for all of them.
I thought we'd get a bit of a break from all the murder but with a series like deadman wonderland that was perhaps a stupid thing to even hope for let alone think about. I of course don't condone armadillo abuse and am strongly against it as I am for the maltreatment of all creatures. This one wasn't particularly interesting nor did it stand out in any way however the idea of creating artificial deadmen is a solid step forward considering that this story seems to be losing its value very quickly and I can't bring myself to care much anymore. I of course still love Shiro and hate the way Ganta is treating her though there must be a reason as to why he feels this way. I hate how Ganta basically hurt all his friends unintentionally just to save a person he hasn't even known for as long. The writer did him dirty. Not quite sure as to whether or not I care about what will happen next. I'm not invested.
