When Alison and Ian were kids, everyone treated them like sister and brother. Now they're older and they're still good friends - too good as far as some people are concerned. Small town, small minds.
You can either escape, or stick it out. Ian chooses his own way, but it's not Alison's. And her way seems to bring nothing but trouble. She's not a bad girl, so maybe what her grandmother says is true: that only the good girls get caught.
Alison is the story of one girl who does get caught, but who escapes through her courage and unbeatable will.
I'm glad I re-read this. This was my favorite book when I was 15 and my sister tracked down a copy for my Christmas gift. I worried it would stand up over time but this is still a good story. Alison is a headstrong teenage girl living in a small town during the 60s. She faces some obstacles but stands her ground to over come them. The end is a bit tidy but it's nice to have a happy ending. It was interesting to explore the themes as an adult as i think I picked up on a lot that I didn't notice at 15. Still a great book and very happy to have my own copy now
A bit depressing, especially considering this was probably an atypically happy ending for unmarried girls/women who got pregnant - it certainly could have gone a lot worse for Alison. Found myself strangely enthralled in the story, but didn't actually enjoy it.
