Philadelphia in 1876 is celebrating its centennial year and the Rogers family becomes even more turbulent than before perhaps due to an upcoming wedding. Two daughters set their sights on a young man from Paris visiting their family for the summer with his aunt.Made into an Otto Preminger film in 1946 starring Cornel Wilde, Linda Darnell, Jeanne Craine & Walter Brennan.
I so expected to like this book because I absolutely adored "The Corner Store," by the same author and also set in Philadelphia albeit several decades later. But I just gave up a few chapters in. None of the characters in the main family are appealing to me in any way! Yes, of course I'm disappointed that the father, born a Quaker, seems like a not-very-Quakerly jerk (although I know there are Quakers who are unpleasant people). His wife is mean to the help. The kids aren't quite as bad, but none of them grab me either. To each their own, and I'm glad other readers like it, but I was stunned at how different the characters were from the folks in The Corner Store!
