In 1934 he settled in Mandatory Palestine where he wrote a novel based on the assassination of Jacob Israël de Haan.

In 1948 he settled in the Soviet occupation zone in East-Germany. From 1949 - 1967 he was a member of the parliament of the German Democratic Republic.

I read this book the first time when I've been 17 or so, quite impressed about many things from the Wilhelmenean era and world war I. Now, 40 years later, I could enjoy also the book's more subtile aspects like the female emancipation and the difficult role of intellectuals, in particular Jewish ones.

The book that started as a political text where the author is trying to explain the situation at the beginning of ww1 through minor characters of important and not-so-important men of 1914 suddenly turned into the love story of Lenore, a 23-year-old upper middle class girl in Postupima, Germany and her lover Bertin, an aspiring Jewish writer. Lenore's family do not approve of Bertin, they don't like him, not because he is Jewish, but more because of his personality and selfishness. To be honest, I did not like him either...and even less when he takes advantage of Lenore and rapes her during one of their secret meetings in the forest. And she gets pregnant...Well, if you are interested in how their relationship develops, you can read the book and find out.🙂

O carte (printre altele) despre război, scrisă de un voluntar înscris în armata germană în primul război mondial.
Romanul este scris însă cu mult mai târziu, când Zweig era deja un pacifist convins...

***OBSAH***
Werner Bertin mladý, ale chudobný spisovateľ ide na vojnu. Jeho láska Lenore Wahlová naopak pochádza z bohatej rodiny. Bertin vždy posiela jej listy a raz sa stretnú on ju znásilní a potom sa mladá žena trápi a dieťa si dá zobrať. Rozhoduje sa, či ho ľúbiť alebo nie. Nakoniec mu pošle list, v ktorom sa naňho vynadá. Lenore má brata Davida, ktorý jej pomáha túto krízu prežiť, avšak Bertin ju stále miluje, všetko by jej aj vysvetlil, ale zlé vedenie jeho roty X/20 mu dovolenku neudelí. Hoci ho Lenore ''nemiluje'' cíti, že stále ho má v srdci. Nakoniec sa Lenore chce zaňho vydať a tým mu jeho pluk udelí dovolenku hoci len na 4 dni. Počas týchto dní, koná sa sobáš a žijú šťastne, ale len tie 4 dni, potom Bertin odchádza na front.

***RECENZIA***
Kniha opisuje dve postavy Lenore a zákopníka Bertina. V živote Bertina sa opisuje ako prežíva vojnu. Našťastie on nebojuje v prvej línií, iba robí zákopnícke práce. Počas tohto pôsobenia sa presúva z rôznych miest - Nemecko, Srbsko, Francúzsko, Blízky Východ. Život Lenory je veľmi utrápený, ale ona je silná žena a cez všetko ťažké prebojuje sa.
Kniha bola výborná hoci možno štvrtina knihy mi prišla veľmi nudná, ale preniesol som sa cez to a dočítal ju a neľutujem. Autor výborne popisuje hrôzy vojny a jej nezmyselnosť. Opisuje tak okrajovo bitku pri Verdune, ale aj iné. Taktiež spomína prácu ošetrovateliek, ktoré to mali ťažké. Ono všetky ženy to mali v 1. svetovej vojne ťažké, pretože museli nahradiť mužov a ak padol v boji stali sa vdovami. Taktiež podrobne vykresľuje vojnovú propagandu, ktorá v tej dobe fungovala veľmi. Židia to tiež v tejto dobe nemali ľahké, sám Bertin bol nim tiež. Neviem, čo by som ešte napísal, iba asi to, že túto knihu by si malo prečítať viac ľudí, aby nepodporovali vojnu.

Lenore Wahl meistert die Klippen des jungen Lebens, selbständig, stark und zielbewusst und führt den geliebten Schriftsteller Bertin vor den Traualtar. Zweig schreibt nicht nur einen Roman über eine starke Frau sondern auch eine packende Kriegsbeschreibung.
