I live in Texas now, but I grew up in Cleland Heights, a mixed ethnic neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware that sat on the fringes of the Italian, Irish and Polish neighborhoods. The main characters of Murder Takes Time grew up in Cleland Heights too, and many of the scenes in the book were taken from real-life experiences.

Somehow I survived the transition to adulthood, but when my kids were young I left the Northeast and settled in Texas, where my wife suggested we get a few animals. I should have known better; we now have a full-blown animal sanctuary with rescues from all over.

At last count we had 41 animals—12 dogs, a horse, a three-legged cat and 26 pigs.

Oh, and one crazy—and very large—wild boar, who takes walks with me every day and happens to also be my best buddy.

Since this is a bio some of you might wonder what I do. By day I am a headhunter, scouring the country for top talent to fill jobs in the biotech and medical device industry. In the evening I help my wife tend the animals, and at night—late at night—I turn into a writer.

Good stuff!

Simple story, super likeable characters. Sounded a little bit cliche at times, but then again I'm not an expert on Italian families, let alone crime related families :-) I wasn't aware this novel is the second volume in a trilogy, I guess I'll have to find the other two and give them a shot. The writing style was set at a good pace, so quite the easy read!

My Thoughts

What can be said about a book that you totally cannot put down but that it was a fantastic reading experience that you were sad to end!

After enjoying book one in this series it was with great joy and anticipation that I cracked open the digital pages on this second book in the Friendship and Honor series, it truly gave me everything a reader can hope for with characters you have grown to enjoy spending time with and a crime drama scenario that just chills you through and through as it played out.

It is honestly safe to say that my love of the murder mystery thriller genre has been restored by the author as this is the third book of his that I have enjoyed and for sure it will not be the last!

We were first introduced in Murder Takes Time to the characters of "Bugs" Frankie Donovan who is a Brooklyn Homicide Detective and his childhood friend Nicky "The Rat" Fusco who did ten years in prison for murder and is now working hard at a job in construction to support his wife and teenage daughter.

Frankie comes home to Wilmington Delaware to bury his father while his partner in Brooklyn,Lou, continues to work on the murder case that Frankie was in the middle of when he left New York.

This story is once again very brutally graphic in it's descriptions of the murder victims, the vicious acts that the murderer commits against his victims and the overall feeling in the book is one of spine chilling horror at times that someone could possibly be so unfeeling and cruel to his fellow man.

That being said there is nothing that does not elevate the suspense and the overwhelming hope that Frankie and his fellow Homicide officers will quickly bring the killer to justice as soon as possible!

There is also the murder of his brother-in-law that takes place while Frankie is in Wilmington to bury his father, a murder that the local police officer in charge of the case seems determined to pin on Frankie.

This brings Nicky into the picture when Frankie asks for his help to find out who the real killer is, this also leads to Nicky facing a very hard decision as to whether his lifelong friendship with "Bugs" is worth compromising his promises to his family that he would never go down the criminal path again.

There is nothing like the bonds of true friendship based on honor and trust after many years of facing the hard knocks that life throws at you, the world would be such a better place if more of us could find such friends and keep them closely nurtured.

This second book in the series explores many facets of right, wrong and gray that we all have to muddle through when walking the road that life puts us on. Sometimes that road is rocky and for Frankie and Nicky also full of potholes which the author somehow manages to help them navigate in ways that will wring tears of sympathy from you for both of them.

The pace of the book is so smooth that you do not realize just how far into the story you are until you look at the page or in case of digital reader the percentage that you are on in the book, it just keeps you in your seat as page after page flies by! You can bet for sure that when third book Murder Takes Patience releases it will be read ASAP!

Warning: I'm about to do some gushing. I simply adore Nicky 'The Rat' Fusco and his family, Frankie 'Bugs' Donavon and his cop partners, and Giacomo Giammatteo's writing. I just do.

Nicky is such a complex character. On the surface he comes across as a little simple, but he's really quite sharp. He tries to pass himself off as no threat, but he's actually one badass mother f_cker. On one hand he seems a little naive about his reputation (and in general), but he's actually more than aware of it and wiling to use it to his advantage. He's not afraid of anyone...anyone but his wife. He'd do just about anything to stay on her sweet side. He's a straight up cold killer, but also a dedicated Catholic and amazingly sweet in his own way. He's willing to go to great lengths to commit acts of heroism, (despite being a remorseless killer/torturer) but is also completely unwilling to seek any accolades for them—denying them even. He thoughtlessly uses outdated and even derogatory racial terms (Mick, Dago, etc), but doesn't seem to actually be a racist. He happily befriends people that the territorial disputes say he should avoid. He's a walking contradiction and I'm a little in love with him.

You don't get to know Frankie quite as well, since you only get a 3rd person POV for him, but he has more than a few contradictions of his own. He's a good New York homicide detective who grew up among The Connected of Little Italy and still has more than a few lasting connections. This causes him more than one moral conflict. Frankie grows the most in this book though and he provides some of the most human emotions.

Giammatteo's writing is worthy of about as much praise as I could throw at it. It's smooth and unhurried. He seems to be a master of creating atmosphere and emotions with very little. The way Nicky's narrative always includes what streets he takes to get somewhere (seemingly pointless information) gives a very clear indication of how important the city and his connection to it is to him. His frequent side notes of what Angela made for dinner is a strong reminder of how the familiar dishes stir his most pleasant memories, further reinforcing the importance of his connection to the town and people in it. But my absolute favourite is all the small ways he reminds himself how much he loves his wife and why. She is his light, his anchor, and seeing a man who is otherwise quite cold willing to openly express his affection is really evocative.

I was a little disappointed that the antagonist was, among others things, a sexual predator. The subject matter was as tastefully handled as such things can be, but the older I get the more aware I become of how often such themes show up in fiction and the less forgiving of it I become. But this is a personal preference kind of remark and one of very few complaints about the book.

I wouldn't say it was necessary to have read the first book, but it would probably help. Events from Murder Takes Time are referenced and some of the character descriptions are pretty light, since you're expected to know who these people are and how they relate to one another. Both books are well worth reading though.

I have much the same thought every time I finish one of Giammatteo's books. (Well, thoughts if you count how perfect I think his name is for someone writing fiction based in and around Little Italy. I hope it's real, but I don't know.) Reading the Friendship and Honour series makes me regret giving some other books five stars. It's just on such a higher plain of awesomeness.

The afterward says that there will be a third on out next year. Given the ending of this one I have a pretty good guess what it will be about. I can't wait! I really just can't wait.

The review was originally posted at Library Cat book blog.

1. Murder takes time - Never rush. Know what you are going to do before, during, and after the job. Know your victim. Their face. Routines. Neighborhood. Family.

2. Murder has consequences – When doing a job you can never, ever, let it get personal. Each assignment is just a job. If you let it get personal, it will have consequences.

3. Murder takes patience – If someone has a routine, trust it. Wait them out, and it will pay off. As for yourself, never be predictable. Don’t shop at the same place. Don’t do anything at the same place or at the same time or on the same days.

4. Murder is invisible – To be good at this, you need to be invisible. And since you can’t really be invisible, you have to practice not being noticed. There is a difference between being seen and being noticed. If you have to break rule number three, make sure you adhere to rule number four.

5. Murder is a promise – If you enter into a deal to murder someone, that is a promise, a secret pact. Once you take the assignment, you need to finish the job, or it could come back to haunt you.

6. Murder is immaculate – Don’t leave any clues, and make sure you clean up loose ends.

These are the lessons that Nicky Fusco had to learn, on the hard way. When he was a child, friendship was forever. At least he thought so. Now, his childhood best friend needs help.

Tom comes out of jail. First stop, his wife. But she didn’t wait for him. There were other men in her life. Tom wants revenge.

A man has been murdered. Tortured. When another dead body appears, it is too obvious that it’s a serial killer.

Frankie Donovan works as a police detective. His brother in law gets killed. Frankie was the last person that saw him alive. They fought. So, now, he is the main suspect. He needs help. Friendship and honor forever.

After reading Murder Takes Time I couldn’t wait to read the book two, Murder Has Consequences. The second story continues where the first one stopped. There are two parallel stories in this book. One is for hunting the serial killer, the other one for solving the case for which Frankie has been accused. Are they connected? I’ll leave you to read the book. This story is a real page-turner. You would not want to put it down until the last page. At least, that was my case. There are twists and turn-over on every next page. Sometimes I wonder are there people who deserve to die? Can killing be moral? Is the killer always the bad guy? How much a real friendship costs? Is it worth for the price that is paid? Like the title says: “Murder has consequences”.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, of course. It’s definitely worth for recommendation.

Really liked this book. It started out like an episode of The Soprano's because of the characters and dialogue, not because this is a Mafia story. In fact, it's the opposite of that, and much more.

This was a fairly easy read, after you got used to the way the author wrote. There were a couple of "oh shit" moments in the book, that threw me and even some heartfelt moments as well. So safe to say the book moved me in a sense.

The writing, story, and characters will stick with you after you've finished. Got to read some more of his books.

My Thoughts: This second book in the Friendship & Honor series brings new problems for both Nicky and Frankie. One thing I haven't mentioned about these books—all the books by this author I've been reading—is that absolutely everyone smokes all the time. Or so it seems. Well, truth be told a few don't, but overall... most of the characters smoke. If you're trying to cut back or quit, this book might make it difficult.

I really liked Sherri Miller and I have liked Lou Mazzetti all along. Lou is more prominent in this book, and he tended to really make me laugh, especially his interactions with Sherri. Here is a good example where Lou discusses a case with Sherri:
Lou took out another smoke. “I talked to a couple who said the elevator's been broken down about ten days. Likely means the guy knew it was out. So what, do you think it's someone who knew I would draw the case and they wanted to kill me in some fancy way, making me climb these steps?”
I felt really bad for Alex and, to a lesser extent, Kesha. It would be tough to be a kid in those sorts of circumstances. I loved Frankie a little for taking care of those kids the way he did.

If you like crime thrillers, and have enjoyed this author's previous books, then definitely give this one a read. The author's abilities have been improving steadily from good to outstanding. There is less mob in this one, but still plenty of gang activity. I really enjoyed it.

This is the second of Giacomo Giammatteo's crime novels I have read, and I am very impressed. The novel picks up the story of ex-hitman Nicky "the Rat" Fusco and his best friend detective Frankie Donovan as the two meet at Frankie's father's funeral. Frankie has a problem: a hometown cop thinks he's guilty of murdering the husband of his sister Donna. Since he's got to get back to the Big Apple to deal with a serial killer there, he asks his good friend Nicky if he'll find the killer. From there the story gets really interesting, as it puts Nicky dangerously close to what he used to do for a living.

Giammatteo handles the plot and the stories within in with great skill. "Murder Has Consequences" is an impossible-to-put-down read that has me salivating for the 3rd volume of his "Friendship and Honor" series, which is scheduled for publication early in 2014. What am I / are we left with? Why reading one or two of his other novels, of course. I've already got mine picked and loaded into my Kindle nattering at me to sit down and read it.

For seriously hard-boiled crime novels, Giacomo Giammatteo's books have a lot of heart, which I find most compelling. If you haven't yet read him, do. You'll enjoy the experience.

I really enjoyed this book. I did not read the first book in this series, which I regret because I think I would have gotten more out of this book. However, I was still able to get invested in the characters. I really liked Bugs and Nicky characters. They were very likable and the story kept my interest. May be reading the third in this series because I liked the characters so much.

Another amazing book by Giammatteo! I never wanted the ending to actually happen because that meant this incredible story would be over. I can't wait for the third book in this series. Giacomo has written another masterpiece! Bravo!

Fun with Fusco

Fast paced read with a side of bad guy doing good and the good guy not sure how to. Fusco and Donovan become a veritable double act by doing things their own way independent of each other. Whilst a gritty subject it's written with lightness that just keeps you turning pages.

Bogart on Steroids

This is a FABULOUS story!!! The characters are GREAT, the theme is creative, and the storyline flows like a great river. This author has done an awesome job. The hunt for living life on your ground. Great Read for all who love Humphrey Bogart. I don't know but I do believe that Mr Bogart would have been great for this story.

Enjoyed the story and the characters

I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. This is a light, casual read without a lot of depth but I still enjoyed reading it. I will read the next book in that series.

A good guy that kills people...I didn't think I would enjoy reading it, but I did. I had a bit of trouble keeping all of the different people straight, but the story held my attention. The characters had meat.

Rare

Rare in that I don't often not finish a book, but I left this at 25%. The over the top Italian Catholic side coupled with the gratuitous violence of Tom made this a book not of entertainment, but perseverance. Somebody might love it but that somebody isn't me.

Friendship

Friendship no questioned asked. You may not see someone for years but when you do it is like you have never been apart. And that includes stepping up no matter what. Loved the book from beginning to end. A new author added to my list of murder mysteries.

Although told from different perspectives it was a fast read. I appreciated being in on the characters minds. Nicky and Frankie are complicated men who have grown from life experiences.
