Biology: Exploring Life

In Biology, Exploring Life, the authors talked with many students and teachers about how a book and other materials could help students learn biology better. Resulting from a pilot program of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the result was a unique 3 part program combining a shorter textbook, interactive activities, and interesting, creative labs.

This is a very well done, standard, high school biology textbook. The reading isn't super engaging or exciting (I know you're going to say, "what biology textbook IS exciting or engaging?" And if you are thinking that, you should check out my other review of a high school biology text book. just saying.) I like that it goes quite a bit deeper into the concepts that are generally covered in middle school. I know you would obviously think a high school book WOULD be more in depth than a middle school book, but I had a hard time finding this particular level of biology book - either they were WAY too simplified, or they were more advanced than what I was looking for. This does a great job of straddling those two extremes. I do think that the authors could have given MORE explanation in a number of areas, but I understand they are trying to keep the reading amount to a more appropriate level as well. If I were ONLY teaching biology from this book, I would definitely supplement with youtube videos.

I have NOT read the lab manual or teacher's supplemental materials, although I hear those are really good. Maybe with the addition of those two things, a student wouldn't need to self supplement with youTube.
