This Novella is a little slice of Sean Michael BDSM kinky fuckery, it makes no excuses for itself and basically gets off to a flying start, so if you like a little titillation between the nice easy sweet reads, and BDSM is your thing then this is a perfect filler.... 3.5 stars
I suggest you read the blub before reading the book as it basically gives you the background to the story that you don’t get from the book. Royal had been a good cop, ten years on the force, eight years in homicide and three years undercover… and that’s where it went all wrong!
Royal had been undercover as a sub and his partner Mike had been his Master… only the assignment had uncovered something deep inside Royal that he had never realised he wanted, never mind needed. Being a sub for Mike had felt right, only Mike was disgusted by it, not only that Royal was gay but the fact that he was so needy and responsive to being a sub. Royal was ashamed and humiliated and repulsed by his own weakness, his mind was telling him one thing and his body was saying something completely different.
Bone is just OMG, a serious panty melting Dom, who oozes power on page! He had met Royal 3 years previous and had been unable to forget the beautiful man and the natural sub within, he finds him by chance, a very angry and depressed damaged soul who has lost all direction and Bone wants to show him that his needs are nothing to be ashamed of.
I loved Bone, all tattoos and piercings, he made Royal feel safe, cherished took control and gave him what he needed, showing him he had nothing to feel ashamed of and that what he felt and what he gave of himself was not weak, he was strong… and for Bone he was just exquisite.
Again this is really a PWP, but I enjoyed it, probably just what I needed, a bit more of a story to it than the last one and I really felt for Royal, and Bone the big bad Dom was just totally smitten.

A Hearts On Fire Review
3.75 STARS--"Royal Flush" is book #33 in Handcuffs and Lace series. This is my first time reading from the series but not from the author. And in his previous works, I was left a little underwhelmed, not seeing his appeal. But this story proved me wrong. It was pretty entertaining.
Royal (yes his real name is Royal) has been forced to retire from the police force due to his proclivities, his penchant for submission. He pines for his straight ex- police partner. He's confused about his sexuality and his submissive needs. While at a bar, he is joined by the deliciously commanding Bone. Yes that's right, his name is Bone and no other name is offered nor needed. Bone is a Master who's kept a torch for Royal for three years. And when he finally can get his dream...boy, he wastes no time.
"Royal Flush" read like an extended PWP but the ending left the reader satisfied. It hits some kink buttons: fisting, piercing (nipples and Prince Albert, oh my!), spanking and toys (hint: can you say penis plug?)
The book cover didn't really portray the main characters because there was no card play or hint to gambling and both main characters were shaved, in fact, Bone emphasized the importance of shaving his boy. But don't let that deter you, the story has BDSM delight, in my opinion. Nothing better than a lost boy finding home with his Master.
So why not 5 stars? The story did not resolve the major issue of Royal's ex- partner (Mark). He causes some trouble for Royal and spouts homophobic slurs at Royal when he had the chance. But the bigger question is, why? If you no longer work with the man, why hunt him down? Bone questioned Mark's motive as well. But we don't really get resolution. But major points to the care Bone gives his boy, such an attentive Master he is, I read faster for each scene Bone and Royal had because I wanted to see how much further he could push Royal.
Is their love believable? From Bone's perspective, yes. He has crushed on Royal for three years and never acted on it. I can buy these two having a long and lasting relationship.

Two phrases i have NEVER written for a review on Goodreads and i'm using it for the first time for Sean Michael and Royal Flush;
THIS STORY WAS NOT MY CUP OF TEA... BUT I FREAKIN' LOVED IT!!!!
I honestly have no idea WHY i loved it - i'm NOT a fan of pain sluts in BDSM (its too extreme a fetish for me) BUT SOMEHOW, it REALLY worked for me in this short story; Bone and Royal were just EXPLOSIVE together!
And i must admit that i have also enjoyed Sean's other 2 contributions to the Handcuffs and Lace series; Breaking Cover and In Time of Need!

This book is about a man who struggles with the fact that he is a submissive. And I mean, really struggles. Not only has it gotten him kicked out of the police force based on his former partner's disgust with him being gay, but it also devastated him to be seen as "weak". Never mind that he shouldn't want the "perverse" things he craves so deeply. That's what a lot of people told him, and he is so ashamed of his needs that it crushes him. Luckily there is a man, the guy who pierced him for his undercover assignment after which his life fell apart, who can help him find his self-respect again.

Poorly developed novella. Story ended feeling incomplete as far as resolving Royal's internal conflict of being a submissive and his homophobic stalker ex-partner Mike. One day was not enough time for Bone and Royal to develop a trusting relationship. Also, not only did Royal need a D/s relationship, he really needed more comfort than Bone gave him. Three years was too long for Bone to hold a torch for Royal. And no information on Royal's current job situation after a forced retirement from the force.

Royal was a good cop. On the force for 10 years, 8 years in homocide, and 3 years undercover. His undercover operation had him and his partner in a D/s relationship which put Royal in the sub position. He's kinky and dreamed/NEEDED to be a "real" sub. His partner is straight (and homophobic). Before he went under he got a piercing and the piercer, Bone, is a Dom and lusted after Royal for 3 years. Thinking he could be what Royal needed because he knew his partner couldn't (he didn't even know his partner wasn't gay).
Now, kicked off from being a cop he's sitting in a bar and, what do you know, Bone walks in.
Things get hot and heavy FAST! I think that's why I had trouble with it. If their time together had been longer I could have bought it.
However, Bone reassuring Royal was amazing. Batting down his fears and telling him he's okay.

I dont like to rehash the plot of the book bc we all know how to read and already did that before purchasing this book.
I LOVE this author and I LOVE this series of books with the police theme. So im quite confused as to what happened here. It was a massive piece of bdsm fluff and not in the fun way. The connection between the MCs seemed so forced and rough that it was difficult to accept. Even in a fantasy land. Bone the Dom has basically been obsessing over Royal the sub for three years and takes over hus life in a matter of one day? Im familiar with the books about subs who struggle to accept their sexual desires but he comes to terms with it in one day and one fisting session...if only real life was so easy :-\.
On a positive note I did really like the MCs themselves and could picture them together if the story had developed differently. In my opinion, the foundation was good the MCs were good it just didnt pan out in the end. :'(

Royal had been a police officer for ten years, the last three of those undercover. After some false allegations from a bad collar, he’d been squeezed off the job and nothing had been right since then. Even though it had been a number of years, Royal hadn’t forgotten Bone – the piercer and BDSM Master who had pierced Royal’s cock before he’d gone undercover. When they meet again, this time nothing is stopping them from truly getting to know each other.
I enjoyed this quick read – steamy and sensual with a good level of kink in it. I liked how things were simple and easy for Royal even though he had a bit of baggage and some genuine trepidation. I felt like the scene with Royal’s ex-police-partner was a little brief. While it absolutely helped bring the conflict and tension to a head the antagonism felt just a little out of the blue to me and I feel a bit more detail before and after this scene would have really rounded the story out.
I loved both Bone and Royal’s characters though and the chemistry between them absolutely sizzled. Readers looking for a good amount of spice and kink should feel this really fits the bill. This story isn’t dark – Bone has been in the lifestyle a while and Royal isn’t a virgin to these games. I found it refreshing that all of Royal’s experience with BDSM though had been undercover and therefore “not real” in a sense. This was a delicious way to have many things new and fresh for Royal without him appearing to be completely innocent. I loved that balance and found it really helped sell the story to me and I greatly enjoyed it.
With some seriously smoking hot sex scenes, plenty of various kinks – sounds, plugs, piercings and restraints – but nothing felt over the top of excessive in the style of the story. Best of all the attraction and chemistry between the two men felt realistic to me and it was clear they were both completely into each other which was just lovely.
A kinky, steamy read that was highly enjoyable for me.

Royal discovers something about himself while undercover but he's made to feel shame about his discover and longings. Bone had a hand in setting up the undercover situation Bone is also just the person to teach him that there is no shame in wanting and needing.

Just an amusement to pass the time. I sort of wish it'd had more pages to really develop the characers. But I'm also satisfied with what I got out of it (considering the current state of my attention span).

Not a very satisfying ending

Rating: 5/10
PROS:
- I thought Bone was just the right amount of pushy to be hot. He has a bit of arrogance, naturally, but I didn’t think it was over the top. And Royal’s fight, his resistance, matches Bone well.
- Royal’s age isn’t identified, but he’s no spring chicken; he’s old enough to have earned a pension from the police department. In spite of that, Bone doesn’t treat him any differently than he would an 18-year-old twink. He calls Royal “boy” and sweeps him off his feet. I liked that.
CONS:
- The ending of this is…not necessarily “unresolved,” but maybe “not resolved ENOUGH” is a good way to put it. I wanted more resolution about Royal’s former partner, about his shame regarding the lifestyle, and about how the two men settle into life together.
- There’s a bit more background information in this story than in some Michael stories I’ve read recently, which I appreciated. But there’s still not much. There are still holes, still things I was curious about.
Overall comments: This isn’t a bad *start* to a story, but I was pretty disappointed with the ending. It’s not sad or anything; I just didn’t find it satisfying.

However something was lacking in the story, it felt too superficial which detracted from my enjoyment. I wanted to find out more about the events that resulted in Royal's fear over his submissive tendencies - what specifically happened when he was undercover acting as Mike's slave? I also thought it so unlikely that

This is the first Sean Michaels book that didn't leave me feeling ripped off or mislead by the blurb in a long time. This author usually promises more than the actual delivery. Actual character development would have been nice. Suspended disbelief for insta-love, how someone longs for another for three years then finds him just when he's at his lowest, and why any law enforcement agency would require such a piercing. Minus a star for recycled shaving scene that seems to be on a loop for Michaels. Torrid D/s short.

I really liked this book, I only wish it were longer. I want to know what happens with the piece of shit ex-partner, does he continue to make his presence known or does he come out as we all know he is such a homophobe because he secretly wants to do what Royal wanted? I WANT TO KNOW!!! Other than that small problem I can't wait to read more from this author.

Yes, the reader gets dropped into the middle of a story, but this time, you hit the ground running. I felt connected to the main characters, the peripheral characters were as necessary; no more. No less.

A Sean Michael BDSM story at its best! Lots of steamy and controlled hot sex but what amazes me most is S. Michaels ability to still give me a great feel for his characters and their personal story even though this is no long novel. Bone and Royal so perfect in their own need. Mike the forever and always ass who needed to drown himself in that vanilla flavor he seemed to love so much!

Very short read. My, my, my, the sex was steamy and smokin! I enjoyed the book and it managed to grab my attention.
