A Political Affair

Rate this book
No one expected Stephen McEvoy to fill his father’s U.S. Senate seat at such a young age, least of all him. The scion of a revered political dynasty, he’s appointed to the Senate after his father’s untimely death. Now he’s in a tough election battle against an archconservative. When clever Anne Norwood interns in his office, he dismisses her as another pretty face—until her independent streak catches his attention. She soon finds him far more interesting than his Senator McEvoy persona. They’re both too smart to fall for one another, yet they do. Their relationship becomes a political gamble in a tight election, and all the while, his opposition lies in wait for him to make a mistake. As Stephen’s past catches up with him, he and Anne must fight for their future. Their lives mean more than politics, and campaigns—like love—are either won or lost.

Mary Whitney

Mary Whitney blames Laura Ingalls Wilder and Margaret Mitchell for her obsession with romance novels. At an early age, Mary fell in love with the Little House series and its dreamy hero, Almanzo Wilder, who only wanted Laura to be Laura. Like many women, Mary later graduated to the ultimate, tall and dark bad boy, Rhett Butler, who loved Scarlett despite her flaws.

Mary has lived around the U.S., and after a first career in the non-profit world and politics, she's settled in Northern California with her husband and daughters. She spends her days writing characters she hopes somehow capture the romance of Rhett and Scarlett and Almanzo and Laura. She's a firm believer in what Rhett says to Scarlett: "You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

I have to preface this review by saying I'm a political scientist. So, for better or worse, politics (without exaggeration) is my life. So I was super excited to delve into A Political Affair!
I've been familiar with Whitney's work for several years now, and I can say, without a doubt, no one melds romance and politics the way she does. It's an art, and Whitney is extremely gifted. She gives us distinct and solid characters, complex and controversial contexts, and intricate relationships. Whitney nests all these things in a very realistic setting; so much so, that I could wake up tomorrow morning and conceivably find myself in this world she's created. I enthusiastically give A Political Affair 4 stars.

We begin with Stephen McEvoy, U.S. Democratic Senator from Colorado and member of an American political dynasty, akin to the Kennedys. He's in the midst of reelection season against a Republican contender who, despite the strength of the McEvoy name, poses a threat. Enter Anne Norwood, the black sheep of her moderately conservative family, who earns an internship with Senator McEvoy's office. What begins as a casual office friendship grows, as Stephen and Anne discover they have more than their politics in common. How will they negotiate a budding romance in the midst of a political campaign, where any hint of a scandal could potentially damage them both?

A few comments:

Before I even discuss my favorite things about the characters and plot, I must express my love for Whitney's use of Washington DC as a setting. I've spent a good deal of time in DC, and she writes so accurately about the city. But not just landmarks: you get the feel of the town. Certain descriptions make me laugh at their accuracy. For example:
"Washington D.C. is Hollywood for ugly people."-Hilarious and pretty true!

In addition to this real setting, Whitney also gives us characters who are wonderfully smart, witty, and likable.
I love Stephen! He's first and foremost, a family man, desperately wanting to carry on his family legacy. But he's also committed to his life of public service. Stephen is charismatic, persuasive, shrewd, intelligent, and gloriously romantic. In short, he's my ideal man.

I would describe the rest of the McEvoy clan in a similar way:
Lillian is a brilliant political matriarch, while the McEvoy sisters (Patty and Megan) are also extremely savvy. It's clear that the McEvoys are born for politics.

Interestingly, all the words I've used to describe the McEvoys also apply to Anne. She's smart, self-possessed, and ambitious. And as Stephen adds:
"He thought she [Anne] was the definition of a mountain beauty...She was lovely."
Their similarities probably explain why Anne and Stephen are drawn to each other, even from their first meeting. They spend a lot of time thinking about each other, watching each other, considering each other...
When they reach the point of laying all their feelings out in the open, Stephen and Anne know they're in a tough situation. But they just can't seem to stay away.

Several times while reading, Stephen and Anne's interactions give me tummy flutters. For example:
-Their convo in the Hilton basement, "Please... Don't call me that. Not when we're like this. Please call me Stephen." *swoon*
-Their first kiss *feelings*
-"Darling, you're perfectly endowed." *faints*
-"But you feel isolated, and I don't like that. I want you to be happy. Because you make me happy." *stil swooning*
-"I'm not going back to life without you--that's for sure." *happy sigh*

Contrary to what one might expect, Anne's relationship with Stephen is pretty balanced. She wields a lot of influence over him. But dealing with Stephen's political position, his past, and any potential threats has to be awkward and isolating. I find myself CONSTANTLY worried for Anne's reputation. The fact of the matter is the female intern never gets the benefit of the doubt in these types of situations.

Other favorite moments:
-LOVE Anne's family...they are actually quite reasonable and moderate. I also, I love Anne's dad: "He hates evangelicals, he thinks they invade his privacy." *giggles*
-The description of the big reveal to Anne's family is perfection!
-When Patty comments: "Never underestimate the ability of the American electorate to behave irrationally." SO TRUE.

I also must say that this story is very well edited. Whitney covers about a year and a half, and she does a great job of moving the plot along. But, if I can offer one critique, some things do feel rushed...in particular, I'm thinking of Stephen and Anne's first time making love. They've been circling each other and this moment for awhile. We [the reader] have been looking forward to it too, and then it's sort of glossed over. This is somewhat understandable since we have a lot of time to cover. But since we get more qualitative descriptions of other love scenes, it seems odd to fade to black for their first sexy times.

In any event, there's so much more I want to discuss, but for the sake if avoiding too many spoilers, I won't give it all away. Suffices to say, I love the resolution and the prospects for Stephen and Anne's future. I WANT MORE!
This is a great novel and Whitney should be very proud. In fact, if she wants to write more, I would LOVE to immerse myself in this world again.

So, as soon as you can, go buy the book, read the book, and come find me so we can gush over the Senator!

Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read this book!

I have a soft spot for political love stories - coughPantydroppercough - so I was really excited to read this. Yes, it's the old story of a politician falling for his intern, but the way Mary Whitney has told the tale means it comes across as far from cliched.

Stephen McEvoy, heir to his family's political dynasty, has been a player in the past, but when Anne Norwood becomes an intern in his office he fights his attraction to her, not in the least because her family comes from the opposite side of the political spectrum to him. Once they can no longer deny their feelings, their relationship must be "managed", and that's where the excellent secondary characters come in. I loved Stephen and Anne, but his family and old friends were lots of fun, and the rival politicians were suitably villainous. The behaviour of Helen, in particular, made me wonder what really goes on up on Capitol Hill!

This is a great read, which I would highly recommend. I must also say it is a beautiful cover. I'm looking forward to more from Ms. Whitney :)

I was very lucky to have received an early copy of A Political Affair via ARC.

I wished Goodreads had the option of half ratings as I would have given A Political Affair 4.5 but as they don't I'm giving it 5 stars.

Living in Australia I'm not very knowledgeable with the American political world but Whitney has such a gift with words she made it easy to follow and the mixing of politics and romance was a real turn on.

The Senator had me swooning from the very beginning, he's charismatic, smart, good looking and he's my perfect man!

Senator McEvoy loves his family, after Stephen's father dies he steps into the Senator role. Stephen's trying to be the upstanding politician his father was well known for.
Stephen also likes his women and he's a well known ladies man, well that all changes once he meets the beautiful Anne Norwood.

Anne has everything that Stephen would love to find in his perfect woman, she's smart, loves the outdoors, is passionate about the environment and she can hold his attention were no other woman has been able to do.
The only catch is that Anne is his intern so it's a big no no for any kind of relationship.

The chemistry between them is hard to ignore, as much as they both try they keep finding themselves drawn to each other.

I found myself falling in love with all the characters.
The McEvoy's are passionate and will do anything to protect each other.
Stephen's mother Lillian is one smart woman and she's not to be messed with, loved her!
Patty and Megan, Stephen's sisters work for him and they don't hold back in letting him know what's on their mind, especially Patty.
The Senator has his family in his ear reminding him that it will be political suicide for him to pursue Anne, but the attraction is just to great to ignore...

The story is well written and I found myself reading into the early hours as I didn't want to stop.
Once I finished A Political Affair I was filled with love and happiness, Stephen and Anne make a wonderful couple.

I know many believe this is just another Fan Fic story that has been pulled to be published but there has been a LOT of changes made by Whitney and I urge you to please give it a read before you judge it, you will be very surprised just how different this story is.

Thank you Whitney for writing this beautiful love story and introducing me to my ideal man.
Looking forward to reading more in the future from this very talented author.

A Political Affair is a fast-paced, thrilling, West Wing style drama. The outcome? Sexy Senator Stephen McEvoy is bamboozled by the young, witty and intelligent intern Anne Norwood and therein lies the problem. Cue sexual tension, some oozing thick intellectual substance and A Political Affair is a stand out fiction.

It’s election year and Senator McEvoy’s biggest rival is Dan Langford. With his sisters Patty and Megan working at his side, the McEvoy dynasty will pull out all the stops; Senator McEvoy is playing to win the election and, most importantly, the girl.

As a fellow lawyer, working in the rat race of litigation reading fiction is my escape. This story gives you the oppourtunity to delve into the world of American politics while still reading a romance.

This story also educates in the most unexpected ways. Mary Whitney is a brilliant story teller and takes the reader on a journey through the iconic political and historical sites of Washington DC while dropping anecdotes and details about the US political system and the finer etiquette of political life. Add scandal, games and players, hot Senators, current political issues plus treachery and A Political Affair will not disappoint.

Yes, this story was based on a fan fiction story but it has been largely written, edited and changed. You should read it for yourself before you immediately discount it. So grab your best suit (or your Monica Lewinsky blue dress!), some large Jackie Onasis style sunglasses plus a string of pearls and jump on the campaign trail of Senator McEvoy.

No Alpha Male in this story, Mummy in charge lol:))

I don't even like the hero first, he was a manwhore who had an easy life.
Slowly he change tho, but he still fucking other woman eventhought he attracted to the heroine but thought he won't get her. He stop did that when he started to pursuit the heroine.

I really don't understand this, why bother writing about his feeling to heroine when he still fucking around? But no worry you won't read that in detail only couple of lines to understand his characters.

He is a change man later on but nope, I still not his fan but why still 4 stars you might ask?
The dynamic political background in this story, you know all the back stabbing, sex scandals, young sweet intern, hot gorgeous senator? They are make a delicious story!:)

This close to the presidential election I was thrilled by the idea of taking a step outside real world of mud slinging politics. Mary Whitney paints a beautiful portrait of Washington D.C and a family who is thoroughly devoted to one another no matter what. Stephen McEvoy is a young senator who is thrust into the senate before he or his family had planned, by the unexpected death of his father. With ten years between he and Anne and the fact that she is an intern in his office it could have easily taken a salacious Monica Lewinsky-esque turn. However, both Stephen and Anne are wise beyond their years; rather than conducting an illicit affair they have a heart melting romance.

When I began this book, I wondered if I could truly love having a politician as my hero. Whitney quickly shattered this thought into a million pieces. Stephen is an ideal hero with just enough mix of imperfections to make him believable and human. You will not only find him attractive, but you'll want to see him find something that makes him truly happy outside his professional life. He begins the story with what appears to be a melancholy and resigned spirit. One of my favorite things about Stephen is that he is just as intrigued and interested in Anne’s mind as he is her body. The love they share of the outdoors feels so natural and only serves to give their relationship a grounding point outside of their political world.

Anne Norwood is an appealing and realistic heroine from a long and prominent line of Republicans. In fact, her father has a slight friendship with Stephen’s opponent. While Anne talks herself out of their attraction on occasions in the beginning, I wanted nothing more than for her to find the loophole and to get her happiness with Stephen. Despite her twenty-two years, Anne is poised, smart, and genuine. She lacks the exasperating low self confidence it seems so many heroines possess as of late. Anne is a self assured, impressive force to be reckoned with, and once she sets her heart on a relationship with Stephen no obstacle is too big.

As a conservative and evangelical there were a few moments in the story that made me raise my eyebrow, and wonder just how democrats view us. However, no matter your political leanings this is a breathtaking love story that will take you on the roller coaster ride that I imagine a political campaign is. Whitney successfully creates loves who may bend under pressures, but they never break. Stephen and Anne’s love is undeniable, and you will find yourself not wanting to walk away from these characters.

This is the first book in a long time that I stayed up all night reading once I started it! I loved it! It is the perfect antidote for the end of election season.

Anne is an intern in Senator Stephen McAvoy's office and, from her first day in the office, there is an unmistakable pull between them. Of course, a relationship between them would be taboo and so a friendship begins. However, it isn't too long before their friendship turns romantic. I loved their courtship and growing relationship -- it was very romantic and my heartstrings pulled for them having to keep it secret.

I loved the interplay between the inside workings of Washington versus the real need to have a relationship that was not defined by those trappings. All the characters were well developed and extremely well written.

I hate to give away the ending but my favorite part was definitely the elopement! It was so magical and I loved all the reactions to it.

A Political Affair is a well written, political romance!

Ripped from the headlines, A Political Affair is a story of a US high ranking official who got involved in a clandestine affair with his intern. It seems like if there's a scandal involving sex, a Democrat is never far away. So stereotypical. What's with that party anyway? Why can't they keep their dicks in their pants?

This book is one of those fan fictions that were pulled-to-publish type of deals; and while I have no problems with authors doing their thing, I've always hoped that they would strive to make it worth the money we're spending to buy their books. This had some editing problems - nothing major, mind you. Just missing words here and there. Still. I expected a polished work.

I can barely recall reading this when it was still a fanfic so I can't tell you what the differences are other than the characters' names. I know it was a Twific, though, so don't be surprised when you're introduced to a whole slew of secondary characters.

CHARACTERS

The characters left a lot to be desired. For a couple of people who are supposed to be political savvy and intelligent, they hardly discussed anything that could be considered as such. I get that this is a romance first more than anything else, but I expected to be wowed by intelligent, scintillating conversations between characters. Both characters were one-dimensional with little to no developments. I'm not sure if it had something to do with how the author chose to tell the story but this third person POV tend to create a problem for me. I'd rather read as the characters feel and not have someone else tell me how the characters were feeling. In general though, Anna and Stephen were but mere cardboard cut-outs.

PLOT

Okay, so it's a bit of a cliché. But I must admit that it's a story line that I'm a fan of. Besides, who doesn't like campy political scandals? This one, however, was very clean. I liked that the author chose to drag the culmination of their relationship until almost to the bitter end and didn't force her characters to a raunchy closed-doors monkey sex.

My complaint lies in the fact that there's hardly any excitement in it - no suspense, no drama. In fact, it was a pretty boring read, in my opinion.

IN CONCLUSION

This was a fast read but don't expect much. Many have given this book a glowing review so you might want to read those if you're dead set on reading this. I think for someone of Mary Whitney's political background and education, she could've done a much better job. To be honest, you're better off reading T. Baggins' Fifteen Shades of Gay if you're interested in a campy political scandal. That book at least stimulated me...intellectually and...yeah.

"And what are your intentions?" she asked with a smile and an arched brow.

He took the basketball and tossed it on the ground. Wrapping his arms around her, he smiled. "Well, they're good, I assure you, but I can't say they're pure."

This quote sums up this book for me. A Political Affair is the story of two people--A U.S. Senator, Stephen McEvoy, and his intern, Anne Norwood--who fall in love under challenging and potentially scandalous circumstances. As they (and their politically active and astute families) navigate the complexities of their circumstance, intentions, and motives, we are treated to a fast-paced, funny, and romantically charged political thriller. Throughout, Whitney does an excellent job keeping the story grounded, moving, and realistic.

Stephen McEvoy is the young and sexy Senator from Colorado. As Whitney describes him, he has "the trifecta of wealth, fame, and good looks," and I couldn't agree more. There is something about a man in power that gets me every time, and Stephen has it in spades. With that comes some baggage though. Stephen is notorious for his *ahem* trysts with the ladies, including a Hollywood starlett and at least one Member of Congress... from across the aisle.

After his father, also a U.S. Senator, passed away, Stephen took over his seat, and finds himself up for re-election. The race is expected to be a tough fight as he takes on Dan Langford, a staunch Republican with some strong and often ruthless political backing. Bottom line: The stakes are high, and any hint of scandal would be devastating and just the thing the other side needs to pull ahead and take the seat... and potentially the Senate.

The heroine, Anne Norwood, is a twenty-two year old Democrat who comes from a long, long line of politically active Republicans, including several who've held political office. That list just so happens to include her father.

While at first it might seem cliche-wayward daughter goes against the grain of her political roots-Anne is anything but that. Not only is she is mature, intelligent, and quite funny, but she's also passionate about environmental politics and is really sort of a policy geek. I loved that about her.

As it turns out, Sen. McEvoy does too, and he's immediately taken with her. As the story progresses, they find they actually have quite a lot in common, and well, one thing leads to another and a friendship... and eventually a romantic relationship is born. But, of course, a senator dating an intern is definitely not on the up and up, and the two of them are forced to take pretty drastic measures to keep things a secret. At one point, a relentless Stephen fights his family--his mother Lillian, the matriarch, and his sisters, both of whom work for him, Patty and Megan--to pursue his relationship with Anne, and what at first seems like an impossible situation becomes an opportunity for the McEvoys to pull out all the stops. Together, they mastermind a plan that is tight and well executed.

But... a plan is just that... a plan. And while the McEvoys have a solid one, they are fighting against an equally intelligent, and potentially more ruthless political machine. Like all political scandals, the one before us is rife with complexity. Whitney successfully paints a compelling and realistic picture of how things in Washington... and behind the scenes, works, and I found myself on the edge of my seat just waiting for things to explode. As the truth comes out... well, you'll just have to find out for yourself.

A Political Affair is an easy read, with characters and a plot line that are both mature and fun. Between Anne's strength, poise, and wit, and Stephen's charm, dedication to his job and family, and his sex appeal you won't want to put this book down. A solid 3.5 to 4 stars.

I could not have read this book at a better time--for sure! A political book during a very busy election year! And this book does not disappoint--in so many ways. I honestly think I can say that there is something for everyone in this book, and I feel it will appeal to many different kinds of readers.

I will admit, I am a sucker for a sweet romance, and I loved the romance between Stephen and Anne. I am so glad that we did not follow this couple into the bedroom, and although their morals aren't the best, they are better than some romances I have read. I never felt that the romance was sappy--it seemed quite genuine. I could have done without the profanity in the book, but at least it wasn't too rampant.

There was another moral issue for me, but in light of the political environment, it is the only response. There is much deception throughout the book, and I know that there are always half-truths and outright lies in politics. I could never work in the political world--I'm just too open and honest. But I will say that Stephen and his family are absolute experts in this arena. Yes, there were references to the Clinton-intern scandal, and sometimes there was the concern that this romance was headed down the same path--so glad it didn't.

If you are in the mood for a romance with some dirty politics on the side, this book is definitely for you. And the author's writing style is readable--the dialogue especially seems to be authentic.

I was sent a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

I have to say I read this book at the perfect thing. I read it during election season. I LOVED A Political Affair by Mary Whitney. I haven't had the pleasure reading anything before by Mary Whitney but after this book I will sure be on the look out for more great reads from her.

Anne Norwood is s sweet but strong and independent girl. She has followed her own path in Intern with a Democratic Senator even though her family is Republicans.

Stephen McEvoy has taken the position of Senator following in his deceased father's shoes. He has a true ploy boy imagine, that is until he meets his new intern Anne Norwood. Sparks start to fly right away and just not physical sparks. He respects Anne's thoughts and finds himself not only attacked to her body but her brain as well.

However Stephen is a Senator and Anne is his Intern so it is a total NO NO for them to become involved. They find a way to get to know each other with his family's help.

This book shows you that even when things are totally on the up and up it can be made into a political mess and a scandal. This sweet couple just wants to get to know each other but they can't be seen in public together for fear that the public will take their relationship the wrong way & totally ruin both their lives.

Stephen McEvoy is a young Senator that tries to be re-elected after his dad pass away. The whole family is involved in the whole run for it.
He is a Democratic Senator and fights against the Republican candidate.

Anne Norwood comes in his live as a intern, she is all he ever wanted, smart, pretty, loves outdoors, sweet but she is taboo. She is the daughter is a Rep, technically his counterpart. What I admire about the Norwood couple is that they allow their daughter to make her own choices and mistakes in her life.
They are very into each other and it becomes a real threat to his political carrier. It seems it will be a nasty game between Democrats and republicans and if he will make it and keep Anne is fr you to find out.....

I love the characters in this book, even the tramp Senator. I adore Lillian, Stephen's mother, she is adorable, so are the judge and the (older) couple who are family friends. It is a good book, a love story not so much politics i n it as you think. It shows Senators are only human too. I recommend it.

3 1/2 stars

Just finished and I feel this story needed further editing. Many simple errors. I'm use to reading errors but the number of them was quite distracting. The ending just happened abruptly and the storyline missed much of its original drama and punch. All in all though it wasn't a bad read. Fine for an afternoon.

I liked the romance of courting each other around present (or not so present) family members. Lillian (his mother) was a great character. I think the initial romance was missing its original spark and the storyline of "other" love interests was also absent. The sneaking around lost its drama some what without flat mates to catch them and blab.

I liked the political life around them. I would have loved to have seen them go hiking in the country areas that they first bonded over. Longer scenes like that would have helped the romance to become more believable. All in all it's a sweet romance.

Happy reading.

This week I received an ARC copy of "A Political Affair." Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. This is a political romance drama with two intriguing characters--an unmarried senator and his young office intern. The story is fast paced and has clever plot twists. The story includes political history, romance, and humor to keep the reader riveted to the story. There are lots of memorable characters, some that we love and some that we love to hate. The author uses her background in politics by including examples of past events to help the characters solve their problems and resolve their issues. There are some nail-biting moments that keep you turning the pages until all is resolved by the end of the story. This is a new favorite for me, and I would love to have a paperback copy soon!

An intriguing, well written novel that has you from page one.
The characters and the setting are beyond what anyone would expect from a book. Ms. Whitney has totally out done herself!

I truly found myself falling for Senator Stephen McEvoy myself, but who wouldn't....with his charismatic self. Intelligent and romantic, just what every woman wants.
When Anne Norwood comes on the scene, I knew from that first few lines where things were going to go....it's just as if you are sitting there at the table with the rest of the interns....AWESOME!
She is everything thing he wants....Lovely, smart, ambitious...but everything he doesn't need with a re-election coming up.
The numbers are too close!
All through out this novel you find yourself giddy to worried to on the edge of your seat....to the end.
Chemistry is a strong thing!
One of my top ten books of the year!

I thoroughly enjoyed, A Political Affair, by Mary Whitney.

When a newly appointed senator's world collides with his young, and beautiful intern, forbidden longings and undeniable attractions surface between them.

With a grueling re-election campaign ahead of him, the senator's relentless opponent scrutinizes his every move, just waiting for a slip up or faux pas.

Being caught having an affair with a young intern would likely be a mortal blow to his future in the Senate.

Whitney weaves the delicate feelings of the heart with the cold and harsh realities of the political world. I highly suggest reading this book to find out and discover the true winners in this political affair.

By now, most of you have realized that I go through book spurts where I read a whole bunch of books at once and then have to take a break. This most recent break was called "Second Semeseter at Sac State."

Any hoo, I was given the opportunity to review 'A Political Affair' before it's publication and although I'm not much of a political gal myself, Whitney made the story realistic and with a fair balance of angst, capitol hill drama and of course, love.

Go forth and read!

I finished reading 'A Political Affair' at 1 am this morning - I found that I couldn't put it down!
Mary has delivered a smart, sweet and very entertaining story - you will fall in love with Stephen as fast as Anne does. In fact, can there be more politicians like him?
If you're a political junkie like myself, you'll enjoy the action on the Senate floor and if you're not, there's plenty of action off the floor to keep you happy. This was the perfect way to spend the weekend!

An election year, when there's been a great deal of focus on the political climate, is a stellar time to release a novel which chronicles the romance and political missteps of a young Senator who has assumed his deceased father's seat in the hallowed halls of the Hart building.

Stephen McEvoy, it's safe to say, has been groomed for the office since birth. A political family dubbed the Kennedys of the West Coast have had a long and illustrious career in politics, and are struggling in an election cycle to keep the job in the family. When Anne Norwood, an intern, and daughter of a state politician from the opposing party catches Stephen's eye, the McEvoy sisters and the beloved Matriarch of the McEvoy clan are hard-pressed to keep a brewing scandal at bay. With a long list of politicians having fallen from grace due to their inability to literally "keep it in their pants," Stephen's family is concerned that he and Anne will become the butt of many jokes, and a political scandal to rival Clinton/Lewinski if their increasing romantic interest is discovered. Positive perception is paramount if he is to stay ahead in the polls.

Whitney has written a spot-on fictional account of what it must be like for someone whose life becomes "of, by, and for the people," and not his own. Her knowledge of politics shines through in her writing in a first novel that unlike some new writers' first foray into published fiction can be rife with grammatical errors and writing faux pas. Ms. Whitney delivers a solid freshman offering that she can truly be proud of.

In my minds eye, I see John-John when I think of Stephen McEvoy, or a a younger and better-looking, Ryan-esque character. He's absolutely swoon-worthy as he is described, and I for one, don't fault Anne Norwood at all for falling hard for Senator McEvoy. I am particularly grateful that Ms. Whitney took time to develop the relationship between Stephen and Anne, going against the grain of the current crop of romance novels which have the male and female protag falling in love at first sight so much. It was refreshing to discover with them what they each had in common, watching an attraction become friendship, and a friendship become love.

You should definitely buy this book because it is apropos considering we have an election coming up next month, and because it is an awesome romance, which becomes a political intrigue when the McEvoy political machine goes into action to protect their candidate at all costs.

I had a unique opportunity to get my hands on an advance copy of a
this book. I can tell you that I have genuinely fallen head over heals
for author, Mary Whitney's characters and their pickle of a predicament.

While the book, A Political Affair is set in the corridors of power in
Washington, DC the actual heart of the story is set in the majestic mountains
and trails of Colorado. At first blush the dashing Senator Stephen McEvoy
falling for his whip smart intern, Anne Norwood made me nervous. As a former
congressional staffer that is a serious line that you don't cross if you
want to keep your job or your reputation but the author eases us into their
relationship with humor and integrity. In fact, I found myself flying through
the book giddy with anticipation for their next encounter. Much of their
budding relationship is built on sharing stories about their favorite places
to hike and camp in Colorado, leaving even this not-so-outdoorsy gal wishing
I could walk out my door and explore the trails during the summer months
sans skis or snow.

Its not all hearts and flowers though, for those that prefer more action
packed reading there are a number of plots brewing involving overly involved
family members, opposing campaigns and scheming allies and enemies on both
sides of the proverbial aisle. There are so many twists and turns that I
literally couldn't book the book down last night. I read through the entire
second half while promising I'd only read one more chapter. Personally, my
favorite character is Senator Grayson York, a good 'ol southern blue dog
with a dry wit, sharp eye for what matters and a wicked sense of humor but I
don't have the space to go on about him.

With all the campaigning and political bickering going on this fall in real life, it was
an extra treat to escape into this delicious story. I highly recommend it!

I just so love "A Political Affair" and in fact, hoping for a sequel to this marvelous story of romance, humor and politics.

Mary Whitney writes eloquently about the captivating romance between US Senator Stephen McEvoy and Anne Norwood, an intern. Anne maybe young, but she is witty, smart, intelligent (thank goodness!), and savvy. She complements Stephen and his prominent political family, such that the readers can relate to their relationship and appreciate the kind of love & admiration that a seasoned Stephen has for Anne. Being a political junkie myself, I enjoy the insight into legislative interaction/manipulation, strategies, posturing, and understanding the minds of the different characters. I admire the gritty Lillian, Judge Clements and Senator York very much.

Incredibly enough, Stephen is surrounded by strong and empowered women. Yes! So love Mary Whitney for it.

She's brilliant in the way the lovers are able to be spend time together in private despite the high visibility of the Senator. Their chemistry is fascinating, and I am mesmerized by the public and private persona of the charming Senator. I can feel the restraint that he exercises when it comes to Anne to cover his feelings and not expose themselves to the public. There's always that hint of desire that is quite engaging.

The book leaves me with wanting to read more about Anne and Stephen as they go through life together in the political world, and becoming accomplished in their marriage and individual careers.

I've pre-ordered the books for my Christmas gift-giving. Can't wait for the launch on October 18th.

Congratulations Mary Whitney!!!

Lisa's review of
A Political Affair
By Mary Whitney

I was given a copy of A Political Affair by Mary Whitney in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book. What would you do when you start to have feelings for someone but that attraction could cause a major scandal and harm many people in the fallout. Stephen took over his fathers US Senate seat but he was now coming up for election. In walks a woman who could give him the desire for more Anne Norwood who becomes his intern. Couple things wrong with this situation. Stephen is a Democrat and she is from a Republican family. Two she is still in college it would look like he took advantage of her. Through spending time together they find that they have many hobbies and past times that they share. The attraction continues to grow even though his family is really against it. What would you do for love would you risk everything for your one true soulmate? Thank you so much Mary Whitney for writing such a great story.

I very much enjoyed A Political Affair.

They don't plan it , they don't even want to act on it at first. Senator Stpehen McEvoy and his intern Anne Norwood just seem to be drawn to each other. They know there are great risk involved if they choose to be together. It's politics after all. Mary Whitney does a nice job of taking you into the life of a politician and the scandals they face being in the public eye. I love that Whitney not only weaves a story between two people but includes their families and creates a real life type story.

I recommend you pick this one up and see how it all unravels.

I received a FREE copy of Political Affair from Promotional Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.

i really enjoyed the political angle of this love story. it gave a behind the scenes look at the campaign process, and what goes into the infamous mudslinging campaigns that we see.

Overall it was an entertaining read that I didn't want to put down. The multiple POV style was easy to follow, and I enjoyed reading from the different perspectives. The pacing was well done, and the twists of suspense were dead on.

I'd say that anyone who enjoys contemporary romance and/or suspense would enjoy this as much as I did.

"A Political Affair" is a well written, fast paced romance that had me intrigued from the start. Mary pens her characters believable and you will find yourself falling in love with them. I honestly thought I would be bored with this book, but it turned out to be one of the better books I've read this year. Highly recommended for all romance fans.

I have always been a fan of Mary's writing and this book didn't let me down. I am familiar with the story, but this version was a fresh take on it. I read this book very quickly as I didn't want to put it down. I found myself disappointed when the book ended. It left me wanting more of Stephen and Anne. I enjoy Mary's writing style and look forward to more of her work.

Another romance set in the political arena between an older U.S. Senator seeking re-election and one of his intern staffers. Good solid story but nothing different from others I've read.
