Read with my Turkish host family's children. Of all the Oxford Reading Tree books, it's the Magic Key series I can't get into. The adventures are always so lame. This one starts with Biff reading a book about pirates even though she doesn't like them. Then the magic key takes the children to a beach which they think is 'magic' and 'What an adventure!'. Seriously?! Maybe because they're British kids and they've never seen a sandy beach before? Then they're 'captured' by pirates who really just want someone to come to their party. The one saving grace was the glasses geek guy who I first encountered in Strawberry Jam.

First I see the story, I don’t like pirates but this story made me like pirates because the pirates were very funny and kind. They helped the children and pirate invited the children to the party. The children joined the party and in the end the magic key was glowing, the pirate and children say to each other bye bye.

Ah, Roderick Hunt, what a vital part of my growing up you were.

I’m fairly certain it’s a British rite of passage to read a Roderick Hunt book. They are the books you have to read at school, the ones that will move you towards the entirety of the literary world.

And boy, were they ever fun!

It doesn’t matter how old I get, I’m still more than capable of recalling details from his stories.

They certainly left a lasting impression!
