Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ-centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition. Exalting Jesus in Exodus is written by Tony Merida.
Tony Merida is the founding pastor of Imago Dei Church in Raleigh, NC. Tony is the author of Faithful Preaching, co-author of Orphanology, and serves as a general editor and as contributor to the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series (B&H Publishing Group) along with David Platt and Danny Akin. He is married to Kimberly, with whom he has five adopted children.
This has been really helpful for my study through Exodus. Tony Merida does a great job of explaining the significance of certain events in Exodus, and as the name of the commentary series says, most of the content focuses back to Christ! I had never heard of Tony before but would love to read more of his work.
I am very thankful to have found this series. This is a very readable exposition commentary with very helpful and illuminating application based on the text. Most importantly, this is not a stand-alone exposition of Exodus, but one in view of the entire bible and the larger redemption story. As such, connections are often drawn to the salvation through Jesus and how we should respond as a result. This book helps me to see the hands of Jesus in Exodus and to love Jesus more even in my daily life. This book is best used alongside your Bible reading. The experience of reading this book is like hearing a sermon - simple but convicting. Looking forward to reading other books in this series.
For the amateur theology student and for the pastor, this book (and perhaps the entire series) stands out as a must read. Viewing the Bible, and in this book, Exodus, through the lense of our Messiah's work is beneficial for the faith of every Christian. I enjoyed the writer's tone, his ability to practically explain passages, and his continual tie to the life and ministry of Christ.
All the books I've read in this series have been greatly insightful and this one does not disappoint. Tony Merida does a great job of explaining how the book of Exodus connects to Jesus and helps to connect the reader to this story. I haven't read many other commentaries on this book (other than the Expositor's Bible Commentary and the Believer's Bible Commentary) but this one did a great job of describing Exodus as a complete book and giving insight into great themes of this book.
Just finished an expositional series through Exodus and either read or at least glanced at the passage for each sermon. I like his outlines and pacing through the book. Great for ideas of how one might break up the book into sermons. He is sure to see Christ appropriately throughout Exodus. Leans on the authority and truthfulness of Scripture (Conservative). He quotes from all the familiar reformed sources, Ryken, Enns, Calvin, Cole, Motyer. Gets the job done!
a very helpful commentary to accompany my bible reading journey. appreciated the insights on how exodus relates to God's larger redemption plan for all of us and its close relation to Jesus. it's beautiful to see the attributes of God displayed throughout exodus and this commentary breaks them down into bite-size bits for meditation.
Found this to be a very helpful commentary in preparing to preach a series from Exodus to teenagers. As the title suggests, it provides helpful connections from the OT to Jesus. Questions at the end of each chapter are mostly good and useful for personal, SG, or family study.
Very helpful short chapters for pastors preparing sermons through each section of Exodus, sometimes very insightful, but more often than not the real vale is that it does the hard work of condensing long complex sections into organized presentations. I always found at least one thing valuable that i could use in each chapter in preparing my sermons.
A helpful work for preaching through Exodus, offering stories and practical applications. Given my different theological orientation, my expectations weren't high, but I enjoyed the book and found it beneficial.
The "Exalting Jesus" commentary series always offers very good practical ideas for the pastor and teacher. I always recommend this series, and the Exodus Commentary was also excellent.
