Sunil Chakravarty, a crime reporter with a passion for investigative work, is approached by a young lady called Rama Khosla with an unusual request. Her father Jamnadas Khosla is in jail for allegedly committing a robbery on his bank. Rama claims that her father is innocent and requests Sunil to clear his name.

Sunil finds that the evidence is stacked against Khosla, even though the stolen money has never been recovered. To make things worse, nothing is what is seems and its hard to know who can be trusted. Can he outwit the others, not least the redoubtable Inspector Prabhudayal, and crack the case?

Written over 50 years ago, this was Surendra Mohan Pathak's first novel. It makes for a quick, gripping read. It hardly feels dated despite the passage of over half a century.

While not an extraordinary work, there are unmistakable signs of the genius that the then 23 year old Pathak would become. For SMP fans its a must read.

4/5 stars

The Case of the Sun Bather's Diary का।

This mini-novel was written in 1963, yet doesn't feel much dated today. In fact it is quite a well paced whodunit-thriller interlaced with lovely humour that fits quite organically in the story. And the humour is not of the slapstick version, so common in whodunits, but has rather suave feel to it. The principal character, Sunil, is smart, vulnerable and a really charming character, who is always ready with a quip on his lips and a twinkle in his eyes. And although the murder actually happens well into the second half of the novel, you won't find a single uninteresting paragraph throughout primarily because the length of the novel itself is quite short and the pace is good.
But the real soul of the novel is the language that the characters speak : the classical Hindustani of 1960's era! What lovely words suffused with all the innocence and simplicity of a bygone era! You start suspecting that all the characters have just came back from a 'mushayra' or a 'kavi goshthi'. And add to that the innocence and charm of the 60's, which spills out of the demeanour of the characters here and engulfs you as well. How can you not fall in love with such people ?!

The only niggle that I had with the novel was that for such good buildup, the ending was a bit rushed and did not do justice. Also the speed at which some of the investigative actions were conducted in the novel ( especially for the 60's era ) require some suspension of disbelief. Apart from that a very enjoyable read, if not for anything else then at least for the nostalgia factor and as a remembrance for much simpler times!

Amazing start by Surendra Mohan Pathak

This was the first published novel by Surendra Mohan Pathak (SMP) where he introduced iconic characters like Sunil, Ramakant, Prabhudayal who go on to appear on more than 100 novels.

Considering that this was the 1st novel, the characters where not fully developed. One of the suspect could ve guessed at around 60% point of the story. The story itself was relatively short, but it is understandable as this novel was printed as part of a magazine.

Despite all this, the novel had one of the best characteristic of SMP (especially Sunil series) novel. Once you start, it becomes very difficult to put down.

Thank you Amazon for the kindle edition of such an old book. Please keep updating your liabrary. I hope one day I will have the complete SMP collection on my kindle.

The very first book by Mr. Pathak. The readers are introduced to the affable character of Sunil, and his famous traits. Though rthe book was written in 1967 It still holds on its own in these modern times.

Very Nicely written novel by the writer. Suspense is maintained till the end of novel. One cannot left till the end of the story. Good one.
