The author of such novels as The Killing Season and the best-selling The Domino Principle, Adam Kennedy also wrote screenplays and teleplays and occasionally worked as an actor in films, television, and on-stage. He made his feature film debut in The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell (1955) and made most of his movie appearances during the rest of the '50s. He wrote his first film screenplay for The Dove in 1975. On television, Kennedy appeared on Playhouse 90 and Gunsmoke. He was also a regular on the series The Californian and The Doctors.
At 160 pages this is the most thrill packed story I have read. A classic of the thriller genre "The Domino Principle" paints a dire picture of how easily a person can be manipulated. A great plot, great characters and a blazing fast pace make this a great story that is going to entertain no matter how many times you read it.
I usually do not read books of this ilk , but it was free at the YMCA I go to, it was short and the blurbs were peaking my curiosity. So I started reading and I could not put it down. It was like I was watching a movie, his writing is so descriptive and came to life before my eyes! My husband does not read ad much as I do but I gave it to him to read and now he is into,it. It is story of a prisoner who is sprung from jail , free, but he has an assignment . He is given, money, new name, new clothes, and is even reunited with his wife.... I will end here because I do not want to be a spoiler. Just read it !
I recently saw the movie, which I thought was good, and decided to read the book. As an entertaining story, the plot fires on all cylinders. The prose is taut and sharp with very few wasted words, although there are a few passages about Roy's background which seem like superfluous padding, even in a book as short as this.
There are plotholes, such as whether this group, who might be the CIA, would really recruit a prisoner instead of one of their own trained agents. Also, the general is along for the helicopter ride, why doesn't he just do the business himself?
But the story conveys such a sense of paranoia - everywhere Roy tries to turn, the group are there cutting off his escape avenues. That, I think, is its strongest point.
That said, I think the film's ending is much better and fits the tone of the story more (although the film also had a stupid, unnecessary plot twist). I really don't think there was a need for a sequel book to this, providing explanation that undermines the mystery of "them."
Only because I rarely give up on a book once I start one, I stuck with this. It never developed and was fairly predictable. The only good think about it was the short chapters.
Excellent thriller highly recommended to anyone who likes conspiracy theory. This is a book in which there is no happy ending because the main character is facing truly insurmountable odds. He's dealt lousy cards so to speak and he knows it. His only goal is to just try to survive.
A formulaic, by-the-numbers thriller with not a single moment of real suspense. The plot is totally implausible and the characterizations, especially that of the protagonist, hopelessly flawed. If you're stuck on a long flight with nothing else to read this might help pass the time; otherwise, I'd just pass on it if I were you.
I got this book off a library throw away pile. Something about it really intrigued me. It is dated to read, but I still enjoyed it. The narrator does a good job of telling his story in a concise, stark fashion.
Great classic thriller! I remember it from years ago, but I don't think I ever read it before. Chills, thrills, just enough reality that it could happen. I need to find the movie now.
This is the kind of conspiracy thriller I love, easily compared to James Brady's Six Days of The Condor or The Parallax View by Loren Singer. The late 1970's produced pessimistic novels where an unknown organization manipulates an everyman to upend the political order for their own gain. I've read many of those and was impressed by this (reading it twice).
Roy Tucker has served 5 of his 25 year first degree murder sentence at Hobart Prison. He had an affair with a married woman and was sentenced for killing her husband. He married Thelma just before she served 5 years as accessory. Roy is called to the Warden's office to meet Mr. Tagge, a tight-looking business man who represents a group interested in Roy. They know his history of Army marksmanship in Vietman, and offer him an easy out. If anyone hears about this, everything will be denied. Over several meetings they move him out of maximum security, and offer him a smooth release, a deed to a house, money in the bank, and a new identity. When you need a lost dog with no face, name, or future - look to a prison. "I can play by anybody's rules if I have to...I'm good at that....whatever I have to exchange for some kind of life outside I won't question it or back down. For Christ's sake, let's get on with it." Within a week Roy is reunited with Thelma for a few idyllic days in Chile before a trial run of the assignment. Within a month the job will be over and the couple can live under no further obligation. The less Roy knows the better. All the thinking has already been done. Each member plays his hand, knowing only their piece. No target is ever spoken of, but we can guess it is the assassination of an American ex-President. What no one knows is that with success or failure, everyone involved with the operation will have to be permenantly silenced.
If you are cynical, you can see how easily we are manipulated. Roy realizes they now have complete control, and may have, forever. They say a man is valuable, that he can go far with strength and honesty. They say it is wrong to question, and find ways to punish people who do. Our votes don't mean anything when unknown entities can shut people up, or kill them outright. Getting elected is a license to steal big, and a long time after everything goes down the drain, a bureaucrat will write it all off. It's a more realistic thriller when everything goes south, and the bad guys win. The plot complex, the characters well drawn, and the bursts of action exciting. This is up there with the best of them, and deserves to be highlighted.
