The 4th book in the Paradise Valley Mystery series, small town private eye Emily Parker's world is flipped upside down when the man she loves is accused of murdering a female Assistant District Attorney. The police believe he was having an affair with the ADA and murdered her to keep her quiet when she threatened to go public with their relationship.
With the District Attorney seeking the death penalty, Emily must fight to prove her man innocent before the police and the press poison the jury pool and he's sent to Death Row. With the help of her close circle of friends, she pursues leads and suspects, at the same time struggling against her own doubts and suspicions. Sensual and suspenseful, you're in for an entertaining read!
The Paradise Valley Mysteries: The Scent of Lies: Book 1, The Heart of Lies: Book 2, The Chain of Lies: Book 3, The Pursuit of Lies: Book 4 (Most enjoyable if read in order.)
Debra Burroughs writes with intensity and power. Her characters are rich and the stories are full of compelling suspense and real romance. She can be found, most days, sitting in front of her computer in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, dreaming up and writing about strong women, their relationships with men (good and bad), involved in exciting, mysterious, and romantic situations.
This book wove a tale of deception. I kept waffling while reading trying to decide if one of the main characters, Colin, was lying or being honest. I kept looking for signs and flaws in his story. I couldn't decide to root for his relationship with Emily or to yell and scream that she should get out while she can.
The story line had twists and turns that kept me twisting and turning. I like the book. I will read more of this author's works.
Ladies, if you have ever questioned your boyfriend's past, then this story will strike a cord within your heart and mind. Love shouldn't cloud one's judgement, but adversity shouldn't cause one to abandon one's love. Read this story and find out how the heroine resolves this very problem!
Sassy small-town private-eye Emily Parker races to solve a scandalous murder. Her world is ripped apart when the man she loves, the town's hunky police detective, is arrested, accused of murdering a female Assistant District Attorney with whom the police believe he was having an affair. The D.A. is pushing for the death penalty. With the help of her close circle of friends, Emily is in for the fight of her life!
Okay, so this is book four, and I guess I am just over it. Emily Parker is at it again. She's off and running to catch a killer, but this time she is trying to save the life of her fiance. This series started off pretty well, but it has become juvenile in nature. These are grown women in their 30s who constantly refer to themselves as girls. Comments made in the book mention that the 'gang' will all help save Colin's life. I expected the characters to grab some Scooby snacks and pile into the mystery machine. It was crazy. In addition, Emily took cooking classes from her friend (at one point before the series began) who is a caterer, but Emily hasn't managed to learn how to cook anything. There are constant comments about her lack of cooking skills. Come on. Is she an idiot? I am so glad I didn't have to pay for this book.
If I could have, I would have given this book 2.5 stars but am rounding it off to 3 stars. I liked the plot and characters for the most part. However, there were some questions and loose ends that were never answered or tied up. Tne ending was too rushed, in my opinion. 1) Why didn't Colin recognize the killer? 2) How did the murderer get into Colin's apartment? 3) How did the murderer spoof Colin's emails and texts? 4) How did the murderer manufacture a photo showing Colin and Allison?
Still this was a quick and easy read and I like this series better the author's Jenessa Jones series. I didn't like the character of Jenessa because she seems so flighty. Emily seems a more capable character, although she can be too business-like and short with people, even her close friends--except Colin, of course.
Another cosy style mystery from Emily and and Colin in paradise valley. When the Ada gets viscously murdered and all evidence points to the newly engaged Colin, Emily and the gang set off in a race against the clock to find the killer before the DA throws the death penalty at Colin. I did read this over two nights but like most of these paradise mysteries I could have easily read it all in one sitting the characters are very likable lovable in fact and the book itself keeps the reader engaged and engrossed.
This might just be my favorite one in the series! Pursuit of Lies see’s Colin - Emily’s now fiance being accused of murder! All the evidence points to him - and the evidence is substantial at best - I had no idea how Emily would be able to help prove his innocence in this one!
My heart was going, no surely Colin wouldn't do that to Emily - they are great together, but another part of me was wondering if Debra was taking a dark turn with the series and their relationship.
This one had twists and turns that I wasn't able to predict (unlike the previous books) and I loved it!
Did Colin murder the ADA? Do they manage to prove his innocence? You will have to read it to find out!
3.5 rating as we watch a private investigator and her friends work to solve a murder for which her new fiancé is accused...with the evidence mounting that he must have done it with videos, murder weapon, DNA found to Implicate him. How do they prove his innocence and who would hate him so much to create such a web of damaging evidence. A fun read but a bit too much romance mixed in with the mystery for my preference.
Good story, interesting twists. Characters keep developing. A bit disappointed that Emily kept having doubts, blaming them on Evan/David. Also that the DA didn't have any doubt that Colin was guilty, his record should have given some room for it, and the police treated him badly, causing real harm. What about the files in the storage for Isabel, that all got forgotten along with the mayor and his loan, plus the safe deposit box.
This series is wonderful! The storyline is captivating and keeps you engaged from the first page! These books are a quick read, but they are so good!! I am so excited to read the rest of the series!
Emily and her friends are shocked with her fiance being arrested for murder. Clues are found and the mystery gets solved. The story is annoying at times when supposed detectives miss clues and ignore procedure going against their characters.
I have a difficult time finding authors that can keep me reading. I can't put Debra Burroughs down. Excellent clarity and focus to detail. Looking forward to another series of hers.
I've read a few other books by Debra Burroughs and I think I can safely say she isn't really my favourite author. Her characters are not full of life. The plot of this was just good enough that I'll read the next in the series.
I have read the first books but it's been a while ago and it took me a little bit to get back who was who and how it all fit together. But because of that I feel you could read this book out of order and do just fine. It's a good easy mystery.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so.Shelley MA
A must read mystery series. I felt like I was right there as I read this series. Loved the characters, and the strong willed nature of the main character. One of my favorites for sure.
A police detective is charged with murder. All the evidence points at him. It's amazing how his friends come together to prove that he had been framed. The book includes a lovely romance.
Colin is accused of murder and its up to Emily to find out the truth. Did he do is? Is he just like Evan? A mystery that keeps you guessing til the very end!
In this, the 4th book in this series, Emily must use all of her skills and brains to find out who murdered the ADA. Whoever murdered her, has gone to A LOT of trouble to put the blame on Colin. He finds himself arrested for the murder, and the District Attorney is out for blood!! He, Emily and their friends have 4 weeks until trial, to prove his innocence. I found myself not able to put this book down. With each book, they just continue to get better. I enjoy reading how Emily and all her friends come together to support each other. I also was glad that Peter made his way back into this book as well.
The heart-fluttering romance and suspense continues in this 4th book of the series! Debra Burroughs has a real talent for bringing realism and heart pounding romance and suspense into her stories that will keep you turning the page to see what happens next!! Loved, loved, loved it!
I think I would like to read one more book by this author before deciding if the series is worth reading them all. I like the people, they seem like real individuals. I just think the story was weak.
