JM Mystery-thriller #5

The Second Amendment

Rate this book
One simple thesis. But it threatens the very roots of the Constitution. There's too much at stake.

20,000 gun deaths a year, schoolyard massacres, and now a wave of militia bombings. America is under siege.

At the heart of the storm is Josette Horvath, the FBI counter-terrorist agent whose world is torn apart when her young son, Daniel, falls victim to a militia bomb. Her brother Bernard's latest political studies thesis meanwhile focuses on the thorny issue suddenly foremost with the President and an outraged America: stricter gun control.

But Bernard doesn't appreciate just how momentous and far-reaching his thesis is destined to become. And as Josette, torn between tracking the bombers and coping with her son's fate, discovers the extent to which the far right have infiltrated the FBI and the White House - she realizes this is one final battle she can't possibly win.

It’s rare that I give up on a book. Especially one that I’ve been given the opportunity to read an advance copy of.
But......I just had to cry “enough” on this one. The premise was great. But the ever increasing cast of characters, erratically weaving in and out of the plot, made the book seem very choppy, confusing, and actually irritating. It just didn’t “flow”.
It’s a shame, really, I was looking forward to enjoying this one.

Power and corruption

Incorporated legal precedents into a manhunt for a bomber. Betrayal, twists and turns, blackmail and obsession all confounding the search. Hard to identify the good guys. May require a second reading.

I've just finished this second part of this crime/ political thriller and I did enjoy it.

The plot is quite convoluted with a lot of confusing characters, you really have to keep your wits about you to keep up with the cast.

If you enjoy a good political romp with an interesting thesis at the centre of it you'll enjoy this.

Timely and poignant

Not your run-of-the-mill mystery, this one delves deeply into the shadowy world of political lobbying and dirty tricks on Capitol Hill to explore pro-gun enthusiasts and their desperate attempts to counter gun control legislation no matter the body count. A terrific exploration of the titled Constitutional issues at stake in America today.
