When medical examiner Sara Linton and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver take a trip away from the small town of Heartsdale - an escape from all the pressures which complicate their relationship - it should be a straightforward weekend at the beach. But they decide to take a detour via Jeffrey's hometown and things go violently wrong when Jeffrey's best friend Robert shoots dead an intruder who breaks into his house.
Jeffrey and Sara are first on the scene and Jeffrey's keen to clear his friend's name, but for Sara things aren't so simple. The sear marks around the bullet-hole don't tally with Robert's story. Robert's wife, Jessie, is incoherent and confused. And when Jeffrey appears to change the crime scene, Sara no longer knows who to trust.
Twelve years later, Sara and Jeffrey are caught up in a shockingly brutal attack which threatens to destroy both their lives. But they're not random victims. They've been targeted. And it seems the past is catching up with both of them ...

I was very disappointed with Skin Privilege, especially after having read Coptown, which I loved. The beginning, with the malpractice suit, is quite good. We understand the reasons why Sara did what she did, but also why these people are suing her. Great explanation of what these lawsuits actually do: strip rural communities of basic medical facilities. The marriage of Sara and her cop husband is good again, which is a bit boring for us readers. But I had real trouble with Lena, the tough as nails latina cop, who always gets herself into trouble. How can a woman like that still be so manipulated by that horrendous boyfriend? And why, given that he is so evil, does he still protect her? The psychology of the characters is not well worked out, which makes the plot ridiculous. Lena's uncle is sentimental, and her mother plain ridiculous. The evil characters are just that, evil. I really hope Slaughter will continue combining controversial themes in thriller format. Sara is cool, dump the others or turn them into believable human beings.
Well…..certainly a few twists and unexpected turns!! Loved the characters. And it kept me in suspense all the way through, I didn’t see the ending coming!
Skin Privilege was a gripping story throughout. I found myself wanting to read more & more to see what happens next. It was one of those edge of my seat moments, with many surprising twists. The way it's written, in Karin's usual descriptive dialogue makes you feel like you are right there with the characters. It's a hard book to put down! The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the ending - or at least, the last chapter, after all the gripping story & build up, twists & turns!"
Could not read the Grant County books fast enough. Could finish one in a day. Loved that it was set in Georgia in familiar places and settings. Not great literature but thoroughly enjoyed it.
