The Silent Dance

Rate this book
Summary: Drydyn is a no-bar – a male with no social standing in a female dominate world. He is expendable, without worth and wholly at the mercy of the women who run his life and dictate his every move. However, everything changes when the Matriarch – the ruler of the land – decides to purchase him from the club where he works as an erotic dancer and call boy. Drydyn's relatively peaceful existence is turned upside down as heavy expectations are placed on him and he struggles to keep out of trouble – a near impossible feat since he's caught the eye of the highest ranking male employed under the Matriarch.

Wow! I was up till 4am reading as I was glued to the story.

Drydyn, a no-bar (bars being a ranking system of rights - 6 bars is the max) male in a matriarchal society, is an erotic dancer in a brothel. The Matriarch, after hearing of his show-stealing act, visits the brothel, and after seeing him dance, buys him from the brothel owner for her own personal use.

Fearing that he will be a Palace Concubine, he is pleasantly relieved that, instead, he is the Matriarch's selection for a dance competition, despite the fact that failure to win could mean his death. Put into the care of a personal dance trainer, where nearly every hour of his day regulated - including training and diet - he captures the attention of the highest ranking male, Zius - a three-bar directly in service to the Matriarch. With Zius interfering in his life, he also comes under the direct scrutiny of the Matriarch's personal spy and assassin, but is unaware that he should be unable to detect the spy.

As the story unfolds, it slowly becomes clear that Drydyn is rather more than he thought he was, and as a result, he becomes intricately involved with not only Zius, but also the Matriarch and her two closest personal attendants - Timothy and the spy/assassin Mazian.

This story's genre is a bit hard to define, with sci-fiction being the dominant genre, with fantasy elements. A romance element is included too, but it is not, perhaps, an obvious one at first, as it involves a number of non-con/dub-con scenes. (There are also a couple of other non-con/dub-con scenes in the story, since Drydyn is essentially a slave, so if dub-con is not for you, you probably should not read it. That said, there is very little, if any, violence involved with these scenes). While this story is M/M fiction, there are a few vague references to some M/F scenes early on, while Drydyn was still in the brothel; definitely nothing explicit, but again, it might be an issue for those who draw a hard line about M/F references being in M/M stories,

I thoroughly enjoyed the story - the writing is good, and the character development, particularly Drydyn's, is above average. The plot is intriguing, with a few unexpected twists, and I really liked the world-building. I would have happily paid for this story and would have still rated it 5 stars. Highly Recommended.

I believe the world is intended to be a futuristic earth. Women are now the ruling class, males with very little status. The book was good, lots of suck you in factor, till nearly the end. It was still good, but the story pattern changed abruptly from character driven to plot and action driven, and it was neither smooth nor an improvement. Things started getting missed from the story, like, say, purpose. Kius kept directing or leaving Drydyn at certain dangerous locations without rhyme or reason. The overall action segment felt like it rushed the story, which had been taking a leisurely, though entertaining path. Additionally, I didn't see the reason for Drydyn to make the life choice he did in regards to worlds at the end. I saw no benefit it his choice. Still, overall a good read.

I came across this when I was looking for something different to read and it was certainly that. I'm not sure how to label it - it started off as kind of slave fic/non-con/alternate universe but there were also elements of fantasy, paranormal and even touches of science fiction. Whatever you want to call it, it was a good read. There was a solid core of characters who developed throughout the story and I was with Drydyn on every step of his journey. There were a few spelling/editing errors but they didn't really detract from my enjoyment.
