In the Shadow of Alexander: A Soldier's Tale

Rate this book
The year is 356 BC and the lands of Europe are ruled by Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander. A young man in his army’s phalanx, known for its impenetrable wall of sharp pointed, 15’ sarissa, Thessius becomes completely enamored by the young golden-haired boy, as does a whole army after him. As one of 45,000 men, he begins the long march with his young king to Persia, and on to India, hoping for a night alone with his beloved ruler. Alexander’s first wife, Roxane of Persia, is portrayed as his murderer. Thessius tries his best to prevent Roxane from moving to her victim, but, inevitably, fate wins out and Alexander the Great dies. With the help of his friends and lover, Thessius manages to find the strength to take the long road back home.

Very badly researched book (if you want to write historical fiction- read some sources!); a lot of editing errors (Bagoas- after two pages Bogoas etc.). Some very flat character (Marty Stu) and lack of strong story. Avoid it!

Can't describe how bad this book is. I am an Alexander fiction fan and this is why I bought this book and now I want my money back! The summary on the back sounded really interesting, plus the reviews on Amazon where good. But this is where it all ends. The characters are flat- even Alexander for god's sake, how can that be? The protagonist, a Macedonian soldier-who is the one writing down his memoirs, thus the story is from his POV-is not really that likeable, the writing is not good and even the humour fails. Save your money and go read some fanfiction instead. They are better written, better researched and their authors are more passionate for the characters they write about.

P.S. Oh, and I almost forgot. Did I mention that this book is in serious need of editing?

So bad it's good. Let me clarify. I did enjoy this book, but only because I didn't take it as having any historical basis whatsoever (not the fact that there was another soldier obviously, but the rituals, warrior knowledge etc), and because I realized that it was a complete Marty Stu. Once you get past that, it's a fun, entertaining, read. Serious Alexanderphiles may feel otherwise.
