I received a free copy of this book in preparation for running a Ruling Our Experiences (ROX) group at my elementary school. This book does a beautiful job balancing hard research and data on the problems girls face today with enlightening anecdotes and practical strategies for the adults in girls’ lives to support them. From topics spanning body imagine, gender stereotypes, sexual violence, and girl drama, I feel equipped and excited to use the takeaways from this book to enact meaningful change in young girls’ lives!
I picked this book up after seeing it at a conference. It's a pretty quick read, and well-organized. Some of the information can feel like common sense, but the book summarizes a lot of research and has an entire table of further resources that make it a handy tool for finding further information on specific topics while giving a good overview. It also has little activities throughout the book that the reader can do on their own to better uncover their own biases and understanding of the material, but I also appreciate that a lot of these activities could easily be done in a group context or individually with the girls you're working with as well.
Overall I feel like the book's given me some better insight into how to tackle some of the more difficult conversations with my students, and it's straight-forward and approachable enough that I can easily recommend it to the parents who sometimes come to me looking for help in improving their relationships with their daughters.
I received a free signed copy of this book at an event hosted by Lisa Hinkelman promoting her organization, Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX). This book is amazing for helping people understand girls' perspectives, the way girls perceive certain situations, and developing new ways to improve our interactions with important girls in our lives. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has important girls in their lives, i.e. parents, teachers, counselors, etc; There are suggestions and activites that are designed to facilitate communication between adults and girls. Some of the examples and activites could possibly be fleshed out a little more, but that's okay. This book addresses all of the important factors in girls' lives and provides great resources for additional reading. Anyone who wants to learn more about the issues girls face, learn how to interact with teenage girls, and who support women empowerment will probably enjoy this book! It's a pretty quick read, too!
Every educator and parent should read this book. After surveying over 10,000 girls, Hinkelman offers her insights into what is happening to the girls as they go from middle school to high school.
