I was six years old when I lost my innocence. Keeping quiet about it was more out of fear of his wrath. When it was finally revealed, I was a drama queen, they said. At age thirteen, they didnt believe me after the gang rape but found it justified to send me away to have the baby. I was a drama queen, they said. Living in a family of dirty little secrets, I began acting out in a big way.
A friend once said, it only takes one person to change the direction of your life. Well, it happened to me and I started writing.
Raised in rural West Virginia and the daughter of a coal miner, my first job was with the hometown newspaper.
I now live in the seaside village of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. We have a saying in our town... "a quaint drinking village with a fishing problem." I love to fish.
My favorite quote is "Gardeners know the best dirt." I'm the type of person that has to be in the know, the inner circles, the front lines. I love gardening too.
Favorite genre is anything with a true story.
I'd be thrilled to get your friend request. Gracias!
Yes, it was amazing as the stars have shown. When you look at the book, do not start judging for how skinny it is. If you put your emotion into reading seriously, the book may even cause you a tear. Just think of this way, when a person you love the most, respect the most, adore you like a treasure, but then then one day that person is also the one who destroy your life totally and make you suffered. I love the way Joyner twists at and end, very simple, but happy-ending and make the readers remember forever. I would give this book more than five star if it was possible, recommend everyone to read
I received this book through a goodreads giveaway a little over a month ago and put off reading it until I finished a book I had just started. I wish I hadn't put it off for so long because it truly was an excellent read. It only takes a couple hours to go from beginning to end and is a wonderfully poignant story all the way through. Sheila Joyner does a great job portraying the story of a young abused girl just trying to find a way through life and the family she is able to create along the way. I would highly recommend reading this story whenever you have a few hours to spare.
This book is an amazing look into a girls struggle throughout life. This young girl faced so many problems at a very young age and in the end she overcame everything. She grew up to be an amazing woman, wife, and a mother. I would highly recommend this book to all parents and/or anyone interested in knowing more about abuse. I want to thank the author Sheila Joyner for gifting me this incredible book!
Such an emotional book! Its a fast read full of horrid people and a beautiful misunderstood girl named Birch. I couldn't believe how so many awful people could be in one persons life. Just when I wanted to scream, some angels emerged and my faith in good people was restored. Beautiful read!
I received this book during a giveaway sponsored by Goodreads.
While brief, the story was a heartbreaking look at child neglect and abuse and the efforts of one girl (Birch) to survive and rise above it. I think the story would have benefited from more detail and more even pacing, as it seemed to gloss over certain events and move too quickly through some parts of Birch's life. I would have liked to see more of her efforts in overcoming her history and her growth as a person. All in all, I enjoyed the story, and found it very compelling. I just think that if fleshed out it would have made a better novel than novella.
First off, I won my copy of this book via a giveaway hosted by Goodreads.
It's not so much the content of the book that induced only a 2-star rating. It was more the formatting and setup of the storyline. Some parts were so confusing that they were impossible to follow. Time jumps forward with little to no filler detail (i.e. "The next 3 years passed by in a dull routine..."). It's an ok short novel and with a little re-writing it could be a better one.
it was an emotional story, about a girl who had overcome a lot, going from her bad home life , being abused by her grandfather, her life through the foster family, and turning into a great young adult, would have loved more details.
