ساده و کوتاه و مفید بود.
بنظرم تیر خلاص رو در یکی از عناوین فصل سه زد. با وجود تمام قواعد و تقسیم بندی ها، همین که به دیگران کمک کنی زندگی بهتری داشته باشند، یعنی شما یک فرد اخلاقی هستی

فلسفه اخلاق
سلام. بدون مقدمه به سراغ معرفی این کتاب را می رویم.
در فصل نظریه های خودگروانه و دیگر گروانه با مثال هایی مواجه می شویم که طرفداران هر نظریه برای نشان دادن ضعف های نظریه حریف مطرح کرده اند. یکی از آنها بدین شرح است:
-اگر فردی را برای لذت بردن از تماشای اقیانوس به ساحل ببرید بر اساس "نظریه خودگرا" شما یا وجود زحمتی که متحمل می شوید از لذت بردن آن فرد لذت می برید و رضایت خاطر می یابید. از سوی مقابل "دیگرگرا" می گوید:همیشه مقداری حس نوع دوستی در سرشت بشر هست که هرچند خودش هم ممکن است از کار نیک لذت برد اما مبدا اصلی انجام کار خیر همان حس درونی بوده است. (مضمون بیان باتلر در ذیل بحث خودگروی روانشناختی)
یک سوال: حال اگر آن فرد را به اقیانوس بردیم و او از آن لذت نبرد آیا بر اساس نظریه خودگروا فرد خیر لذت نخواهد برد؟ پاسخ را در صفحات۵٩ و ۶٠ بجویید!

در فصول میانی با نظریات اخلاقی بیشتری آشنا می شویم مانند:
سودگروی عمل نگر، سودگروی عام و سودگروی قاعده نگر
مولف با مطرح کردن هر کدام و بیان چند مثال سعی می کند تا مهمترین عناصر در تعریف فعل یا گزاره اخلاقی را بیابد. نکته جالب این است که در مقام عمل و بررسی مسائل به تزاحم های مختلفی بر می خورد و هرچه جلوتر می رود به عناصر و عناوین تازه ای می رسد که نسبت امتیاز یک فعل از فعل دوم در یک موقعیت خاص را تغییر می دهد.

همانطور که از اسم کتاب بر میآید غور و جستجو در میان ده ها تعریف و نظریه پیرامون چیستی اخلاق و فعل اخلاقی و خاستگاه آن موجب می شود تا ما با اثری علمی و نه صرفا گزارشی ترویجی مواجه باشیم به طوری که مقایسه میان ده ها تعریف و بررسی نسب منطقی بین اجزای آنها حتی برای بنده نیز گاهی با غلبه حس ملالت همراه می شد. وجه اثباتی کتاب و کم بودن مثال های جذاب جزئی به شدت از گیرایی آن کاسته به طوری که پس از مطالعه ۴٠ صفحه ممکن است از خود بپرسی حال این همه کر و فر و بالا و پایین نهایتا در جنبه عملی چگونه می خواهد خود را بنماید؟! به ویژه در مواضعی که نویسنده در چندین نوبت اذعان می کند احکام نظری و تئوریک بررسی شده با احکام عملی و کاربردی در دنیای واقعی فرق خواهد کرد و استدلال ها یارای مقابله با شرایط میدانی را نخواهند داشت.
پ: این کتاب٢۴٢ صفحه ای که سال ها در کارتن خاک می خورد و به حکم کفاره آثاری که هنوز نخوانده ام مطالعه شد همراه شد با تکان دادن گاه و بی گاه نوزاد کوچک ما که خود البته قندی شد بر طعم تلخ مستدلات بی روح این اثر.

Tertarik dengan ulasan salah seorang pembaca, " don't read this book unless you have to".
Apa itu morality? Apa itu etika? Apa itu Intrinsic value? Atas premis apa etika dan morality harus dipandang?
Secara kesimpulannya, buku ini memuaskan. Pembahasan soal etika dan morality menurut pandangan falsafah dikupas dengan begitu panjang lebar. Termasuk pandangan tokoh dari aliran utilitarianisme, deontologis.
Apa itu morality? Apa itu etika? Apa itu Intrinsic value? Atas premis apa etika dan morality harus dipandang?
Secara kesimpulannya, buku ini memuaskan. Pembahasan soal etika dan morality menurut pandangan falsafah dikupas dengan begitu panjang lebar. Termasuk pandangan tokoh dari aliran utilitarianisme, deontologis.

Not an easy, or even a particularly enjoyable, read.
Frankena lays out his aim in the preface, "My aim in this book is not just to introduce the problems and positions of moral philosophers, but to do moral philosophy." (xv) And this would excuse his frequent interjections, "My own position..." (p. 113); however, the book is much better at Frankena stating his own position (or lack there of) than the former (cl)aim of explaining the positions of moral philosophers.
His own position relies heavily on Joseph Butler and W.D. Ross, a position that severally dates the books, written in the 1960s, prior to John Rawls' impact, and prior to Alasdair MacIntyre's deconstruction of western ethics.
The thematic ordering also results in a lot of bouncing back and forth, especially to Hume and Kant, making an systematic evaluation of those thinkers (along with others, both whales like Platon, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Bentham/Mill and minnows like Ayer, Stevenson and Moore...and Ross and Butler).
The book is divided into 6 sections:
1) Morality and Moral Philosophy
2) Egoistic and Deontological Theories
3) Utilitarianism, Justice and Love
4) Moral Value and Responsibility
5)Intrinsic Value and the Good life
6) Meaning and Justification
And each section is divided into relatively short (1-3 pages) subsections, giving a taste larger issues, like Act-deontological Theories, Kant's Theory, "Good" and its senses, Theories of Justification etc.
The book does a good job at discussing the difference between act and rule ____ (deontology, utilitarianism...etc) and some basic psychological underpinnings, but much of which is very dated.
The main takeaway is Frankena's hybrid end of morality: benevolence and justice, not being satisfied with either deontological rules nor the raw hedonism of the consequentialists. But to me, the (semi) literate consumer, the hybrid "good" is both unconvincing and unsatisfactory.
All through the book I kept thinking how strange it is for a Calvinist to both distrust/disparage reason, and "do" philosophy of ethics.

Solid general introduction to ethics. Somewhat out of date. Frankena offers a sketch of his own ethical theory that place the principles of beneficence and justice as the foundation. Interesting arguments throughout. His approach is balanced and gives ethical views he opposes a fair hearing.

Frankena is quite fair in this introduction to normative ethics (and meta-ethics). He encourages his readers to listen to his arguments but also to reason out the subject matter for themselves; he tries to avoid dogmatism. For the most part, he clearly defines his terms and occasionally repeats the points of previous chapters, thus making the book tie together well.
This book has challenged me about the connection between metaphysics and ethics in that Frankena seems to argue that ethics is not rooted in the nature of things (although Frankena does discuss the question of whether humans are free or determined, a metaphysical concern). I, however, tend to lean toward the notion that God as Creator has given humans their nature and determines what is good and evil for us. Specifically, as humans are made in the image of God, it is good for us to be like God (e.g., to love one another). It seems that many moral laws can be derived by considering human nature and society and what preserves human life. For example, we ought to feed the hungry because humans as made in the image of God have intrinsic value (for they are lesser goods made in the image of the supreme good); but because we as humans can reason, act freely, and know our own nature, we have extra moral responsibility. Thus, in some cases the death penalty for murder may be appropriate, especially if the murderer has no remorse. (On another note, is it humane to institutionalize someone? Some after extended solitary confinement can no longer stand society and thus turn to crime or suicide to take themselves back out of society.)
Even so, I have much to learn about the study of normative ethics and meta-ethics. But I still prefer metaphysics.

I read portions of it for a course I took on Ethics. It helped to provide introductory framework and arguments for further study. At the time, I did not know who William Frankena was. However, I came across him again in his introduction to Jonathan Edwards' The Nature of True Virtue. This peaked my interests in the views that Frankena might hold. I don't know, maybe I will return to this book one day.

اگرچه کتاب حدود 50 سال پیش نوشته شده ولی در مقایسه با کتاب های دیگه مثل گنسلر و مانند اون بسیار عمیق نوشته شده.
نظریه ی فرانکنا در دیدگاه تلفیقی واقعا جالبه و باید بگم خیلی قابل تامله اگرچه به نظر من دیدگاه تلفیقی یک مشکل بزرگ داره و اون هم اینکه به قول مایکل مور: دنبال کردن دیدگاهی ترکیبی مثل آن است که بخواهیم با یک سنگ دو پرنده را شکار کنیم؛ بدیهی است وقتی سنگ پرتاب شد، پرنده ی دیگر را از دست خواهیم داد.
ویلیام فرانکنا استاد دکتر مهدی حائری یزدی بوده است.

Not bad, but not really great either. Fair to midland I guess. Much of Frankena's language is difficult to follow, but his points are good. I would say don't read it unless you have to...

Don't read this book if you want to learn about ethics. It's dry, very dense, and our professor basically wrote the book into an easier outline format, so I did't read beyond the first two chapters.
