Benjy and Sue have a busy day helping Daddy. Mommy and Daddy are so pleased with their two helpers. Benjy and Sue are very pleased, too, because helping Daddy is fun.
#14 of 68 Special miniature versions of Golden's best-loved children's stories
Written in 1962, this book depicts an idyllic Saturday. A little boy and girl help their daddy complete about a dozen different tasks around the house in a single day. Mommy waves from the kitchen window as she bakes cookies for them. Daddy's pipe is in his mouth in about 90% of the illustrations - even when he's chopping wood, inside the house, or near the children. At the other times, his children hold it for him. When the odd-jobs are finished, daddy and the kids settle down at the table to a nice warm meal that mommy has prepared. Then the children are both very tired and go straight to bed! What a wonderful day.
A favorite golden book of my childhood. As I read it now, it explains how I became such a hard worker! I always wanted to help daddy. That's how I learned to hammer at four and make rice a roni at five and why I still love a pretty watering can.
A Little Golden Book from my youth, re-read as an adult. One to read if you harken back to the golden age of gender stereotypes. (Though it is a cute book and the illustrations are very appealing.)
