Rear cover "A comprehensive pattern library containing hundreds of different stitches written in easy-to-follow language. These range from variations on the basic knit and purl stitches to the most intricate and beautiful traditional cable and lace patterns. A concise, clearly illustrated introductory section explains the basic techniques of knitting from start to finish, including hints and tips on how to follow a pattern."
This is a very nice basic selection of stitch patterns: Textures, laces, cables and colours. The photos and text are reasonably clear, although there are some non-standard abbreviations. (They are explained in the opening pages.)
This is the best book for knitting stitches I have ever seen!
It does not have any patterns, so if you are looking for knitting projects this is not the book for you.
It does have very clear tutorials for basic knitting, with two colour diagrams for basic techniques. I go to these whenever I have forgotten a technique, since I learn best with clear written instructions and diagrams. The techniques covered are:casting on, basic stitches (knit and purl), casting off, information on tension, increasing, decreasing, slip stitch decrease, working two stitches together, yarn forward increase, working into the front and back of a stitch, make 1, Picking up dropped stitches, grafting, backstitch seam, mattress stitch seam, picking up stitches along an edge, joining in a new colour, stranding colours, weaving, colour patterns, and Swiss darning.
There is also two pages of common abbreviation meanings.
But what makes this book truely great is the 78 pages of stitch patterns! There are about 7 stitch patterns per page (based on the first 5 pages), with an image of each stitch pattern followed by the patterns written out in abbreviation. (Man, when I was learning did I go to that the abbreviation meaning page SO many times!)
The knitting patterns are sorted into: knit and purl patterns, patterns for texture and colour, all-over lace patterns, lace panel stitches, rib patterns, cables, and edging patterns.
A pattern "dictionary." There are a lot of good patterns, but the only thing is that the abbreviations are slightly different than the standard American ones.
