During a routine case, private investigator Elena Ronen meets and falls in love with Vittorio Santini, member of a secret coven, and a kiss awakens her dormant magical powers. Because Elena wields an extremely powerful form of magic, she struggles to convince her enemies she has no desire to take over the coven. When loyalties are questioned, and Elena can no longer tell friend from foe, she must prove she wants nothing more than to live her life quietly. When this wish falls on deaf ears, Elena and Vittorio must work together to defeat their enemies as they try to save their love, their lives, and the lives of those they care about.

Full disclosure: I’m friends with the author, Jen Sights. We met through NaNoWriMo. But she did not provide the book to me or ask me to review it. I’m doing it because I want to.
Divided is the story of private investigator Elena Ronen. When she’s called on by a mother to find her missing teenage daughter, Courtney, it seems like run-of-the-mill case. It turns out to be anything but. Elana is pulled into a world of witches, covens and dangerous power plays she never knew existed. Along the way, she discovers her own power and meets Vittorio, a handsome fellow witch to whom she’s instantly attracted. As the case progresses, magic, fate, love and human machinations intervene to blur the lines between friend and foe, illusion and reality. Elena is determined to find out the truth and rescue Courtney, but doing so may cost her life and endanger those she holds most dear.
I downloaded Divided because I wanted to support my friend and fellow writer. Never in a million years did I think I’d finish it in a matter of days. I couldn’t put it down and spent way too many nights awake reading when I should have been sleeping. Jen does a great job of turning what could be a conventional urban fantasy plot on its head. She deals with magic in a way I’ve never seen before (and I’ve read LOTS of books with magic in them), plus the powers Jen gives to her witches and the mythology governing them are fresh and believable (I’m still waiting to discover mine). Her storytelling ability is evident in the way she uses the missing girl plot as a way of revealing the bigger story of Elena, Vittorio and the coven they could rule or may kill them both. And if you’re wondering about character development, let me just say this: I’d like Vittorio to leap off the page and kiss me (although sometimes his devotion gets a little cloying for me). I also yelled at the book (out loud) when something bad happened to one character, so Jen definitely got me to care about them.
While the book has some flaws and typos, Jen is a promising author and Divided is an excellent illustration of her talents. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel and watching her grow both as a writer and in her career.
Sometimes when I have the time to sit back and relax, I love to explore Amazon for Kindle freebies, and most often cases run into little gems like this. I was amazed to see there were not many reviews for this fascinating bewitched tale. I think what caught my attention at first was the cover. My first though when looking at it, I thought, “Man, she looks a lot like Elena from Vampire Diaries.” Also how lovely yet simple the cover is, perfectly depicts the title. So getting into the first chapter of the book, you learn that our Heroine is indeed named Elena. She’s a well put together, young and intelligent private investigator and works with missing person cases. She’s approached by a mother and is set on an investigation to find her missing teenage daughter. Little did Elena know, just what she was getting herself into. Solving many cases of ordinary missing person cases, Elena finds herself in a world of magic, darkness and danger when she’s undercover investigating a Goth club downtown where the missing girl was known to visit. Here she meets the enigmatic Vittorio, club owner and drop-dead handsome man. Indescribable passion strikes them when they are near each other, and never able to control how they feel for one another. The two characters finally discover what great things they can bring to the world by being together, magic awakens in Elena. Then, things suddenly take a turn in the investigation, leaving me on the edge of my seat. These two characters together make for some steamy, fervent scenes. And per usual, I hope this vague opinion of mine will spike a bit of interest for you to get on Amazon and get this book, I hate to spoil anything drastic, and like so many other books I love, I try to be careful, because the magic this book contains is best when experiencing it on your own!
All in all, the mystery, the paranormal, and the romance, all together make for an enthralling story. I believe if you like books such as Night Huntress, Vampires in America, and Sentinel Wars, this book will blow you away. I cannot wait to see what happens next. Thank goodness for Kindle apps, I would have never found this piece of treasure.
On a routine case, private investigator Elena Ronen is suddenly thrust into a magical world full of enemies and she will have to trust Vittorio, the man who awakened her powers with a kiss in this fascinating paranormal fantasy romance.
This steady to fast paced plot keeps readers shivering in anticipation with suspense, magic and passion. The author describes the story with well written words and details that capture the imagination and the fascinating magical world draws the readers deeper into the story. The characters are strong, compelling characters grab the reader’s attention and the well orchestrated suspense ensures that the reader can’t put the book down until they read every word.
The attraction Vittorio and Elena burns hot enough to scorch the coven, but the relationship puts them both in danger as Elena’s unknown powers erupt. The reader can’t help but get caught up in their story as Elena first has to come to terms with the fact that magic exists and then betrayal as enemies want to use her powers by threatening everyone around her. There is a lot of emotional turmoil in the story that adds depth to the story which along with the believable action scenes makes the reader feel as if they are part of the story.
Spine tingling tension builds as the danger escalates and their enemies true intentions become known but that’s not where all the excitement comes from, their personal life, figuring out who they can trust and trying to figure out what direction they should take in their future also plays a huge part in the story along with the original investigation ensures there is never a dull moment. I found the story to be enjoyable and the world intriguing with captivating characters and I can’t wait to read the next story in Elena’s life.
I kept waiting for it to be good I could feel the potential but sometimes the writing have was like hitting a wall. The main character has a tendency to monologue which is quite irritating. All the players have these intense back stories which would be fine if said back story influenced the plot. The magic system... it seemed to have no rules and very little layering and she would be assassinated before folks would let that kind of thing out of the bag lets be real. Nice try but not compelling enough for me to follow the series. Also the author did a lot of Christian bashing. I was like I get it you got hurt by a church at some point in your life yeah people stink but I think that her attitude reflects a bad experience rather any research she comes across as bitter rather than reasonable and if she wants her world view accepted she should probably be very much more subtle.
I normally don't read paranormal romances...unless they involve mermaids. I decided to try this because it is written by a local author and set in St. Louis, Missouri, which is near where I live. It was fun reading about locations in the city that I'm familiar with. Unfortunately, there's a bit too much romance for my taste and I just couldn't get into the characters or story. I do feel that this book is very well written and I do like the main character's name, Elena Ronen. I believe that most people who enjoy stories about modern day witches will probably enjoy this book (and series). I would certainly be willing to try other books by this author.
This book read like a gothic City of Bones novel. In other words, I really enjoyed it! Kevin was an awesome side-character, Vittori was a cool dude to fall for, and Elena was a smart and brave. It was a very romantic story. I enjoyed the magical elements, and the mystery just as much.
I enjoyed the book overall, and look forward to the next one. I have a feeling that the author is going to be yet another one where I keep an eye out for her books whenever they come out.
This was an excellent paranormal romance. I loved the connection between the two main characters. Vittorio was strong but not controlling. Elena was not weak, but also knew when she needed help. This story is unique to anything I've read so far and has definitely earned a spot on my favorites shelf. I can't wait until the sequel is released. I hope we get go read more about Elena and Vittorio.
Jennifer has done a fantastic job of creating characters you want to learn more about. I know there are people out there who do not believe in "Love at first sight" like the one shared by Elena and Vitorio, but as a woman married to her "love at first sight' husband of 14 years...sometimes the universe lets it happen. Divided is the start of a magical story by a truly talented woman.
I really liked this novel. It was a fun, easy read. There is some room for character development as the series continues, which I look forward to in the next book. I also look forward to seeing how the war between Vittorio and the rest of the coven develops.
Liked this book cause it was set in the St Louis area. Elena, as a character showed a lot of growth in the book, which is wonderful and the story unfolded nicely, well done!
