Wheeler went west in 1868 when buffalo still roamed the wide open plains. Whether fighting with or against Indians, keeping store or raising cattle, he courted excitement just as his acquaintances Buffalo Bill and Jim Bridger did— Buffalo Days is western history made personal.
Some treasured stories to be sure. The description of Crazy Horse dying is referenced in more than a few history books and is the definitive version from the mouth of the man who was at his side shortly before death found him. Wheeler speaks highly of Indians from a time when white men had very little use for them. His personal experience as written in this book is invaluable to western history.
