This book was a bit confounding. The first two thirds are very much like Sherwood Anderson on quaaludes, but then there is a sudden Bulgakov turn to things that didn't ever quite work for me. I suppose I should have paid attention to the "a parable" subtitle, which appears here on Goodreads but not anywhere in the book itself.
