I received an advance copy of this book from the author for an honest review. Molly is a human girl in love with a guy from a different planet - one that unfortunately ages you faster, slowly forcing the two apart. However, Victor loves Molly and is willing to fight ceaselessly to keep her by his side. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes Molly's family and she's forced to rethink her life and her priorities, to the point where she's seriously thinking of joining the Sentinel ranks.
Okay, so first things first! I liked this book better than the previous one, I really did. But...that doesn't mean I liked it a whole lot. Like the first one, this book has great ideas and potential, the execution is just not as great as it could be.
Molly's relationship with Victor continues, seemingly growing stronger and stronger. Yet I couldn't help but feel like I was reading Twilight (which I really do NOT like) all over again, just with better characters and a much more interesting plot line. Molly develops as a character more in this book, only not in a way that made me like her! At the very beginning, she literally uses her friends to see Victor, knowing that it's despicable of her but she just doesn't care. I thought the point of that was to set up a contrast between her relationship with her friends at the beginning of the book and how their relationship would be at the end...but nope. Her friends are hardly in this and granted she has a good enough reason to not go to school, but why even bring them into the story in the first place? The story line would have been just as effective and much more streamlined had it taken place in the summer where extraneous details could have been erased. D:
In addition, like the first book, the conversations all felt very forced (and everything is described as sexy! :p ). I think it's the minimal use of contractions but I'm not sure. Unfortunately, because of this, I felt very little emotion when Molly's parents died ): I felt more for the animal deaths than the human deaths, even with Molly continually using the death of her parents as an excuse for various behaviors and actions. Molly's loathing for the Terrakas felt really weird - like she's forgetting that she's human too and even though someone horrible hurt her parents, that there are people out there who feel the same as her.. Her actions just always feel so irrational to me, but maybe that's the point! Anyway.
BUT!! This book did manage to draw me in, much like the fist one did. The ideas and concepts are very interesting and really give you food for thought and I thank the author for giving me a chance to read this ahead of time (: If you like Twilight, this is definitely a book you should try out! If you like heart-racing romance with dangers trying to keep the couple apart, then deeeefinitely try this book.
Mrs. Whelan offered to send the ARC copy of the book over to me in exchange for an honest review, and I am so glad I accepted. (:
The Story: The story starts with Molly thinking about Victor and Arkana at school. He's been coming to see her regularly, and her feeling for him haven't changed. If anything, they've grown stronger. Victor pleads with Molly to finally tell her parents the truth--not only about him being her boyfriend, but about everything. She agrees. Right after revealing and explaining everything, tragedy strikes. Soon, it all goes downhill from there.
My Thoughts: Just to clear things up with readers, Yes. This is part 1. Part 2 will be made and released along with the book of both parts combined later on in the year.
So, just like with the first book, I really did like it. The only reason it has four stars is because…well, I only have part 1. My only complaints are that we didn't really get to experience, and see Molly trying to become a Sentinel, but hopefully, that will be in Part 2. Also, I felt that the book went a little fast for me. Not just because it is only the first part, but the events in general. One thing happened, and then another, and it just kept building up. But, then, that also makes sense considering how Molly reacts.
Once again, Molly's feelings are portrayed and written very well. I can practically feel the pain myself. The description of landscapes, clothing, and technology were very detailed. You can literally see them in your mind. How she reacted with everything that was going on her life was very realistic as well. Naturally, when something this big happens in your life, affecting you negatively, you want to get away and forget the pain, which is exactly what Molly did.
Victor's love for her is absolutely amazing though. No matter what she did and how she reacted, he loved her through it all. He was always there for her, providing what she needed, guiding her on making the right decisions. You can tell their love for each other is strong. I hope there's no love triangles in the next few books. :o (actually, I don't think I would mind that, lol.)
Also, I am so rooting for Molly right now. I hope she gets to become an awesome Sentinel, proving everybody wrong. I can't wait until she's all badass and stuff. But I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE CUT HER HAIR! Couldn't she have been badass with her hair? I hope she's able to grow it back quickly, with time 5x faster than earth and all.
And, what about that ending?!
Haha, thanks again to Mrs. Whelan for giving me an ARC copy of the book.
4.5 STARS! A thousand thanks to the lovely A.B. Whelan for offering me a free e-book copy of this novel in exchange for a review!!! I have to admit, it was truly a spectacular read considering it is only part one of the sequel! We see a lot more drama and complexity in the different aspects throughout the story, which is actually very impressive compared to the first novel, Fields of Elysium. There wasn't as much adventure, but instead we are given the opportunity to go deeper into the amazing Arkanian world in terms of its culture and society. I definitely love the intensity of Molly and Victor's love for one another and how it continues to grow despite obstacles or consequences they may face. I did cry... or at least teared a few times because of a few scenes as well as because we start to see a different side of Molly that's just both so emotional and profoundly motivated, really bringing out that quality in her that separates her from other average teenage girls and pushing her to mature to a level beyond her comfort zone. I could also sense a little bit of foreshadowing here and there, so it made it even more exciting to continue to read on and on to find out what happens next. Again, there's some wonderful character developments, and I felt that the details and writing were just right for me so two thumbs up for that!
The plot was very gripping. Rather than there being a drag or static-feel to some part of the story, it kept working its way to the top and I became more engrossed in the different situations and events that occurred as I kept reading, in addition to being completely mesmerized by how the author described Arkana. I just honestly cannot get enough of it. The author has such a creative way of transforming modern day into a futuristic approach that just when you think it's gonna be something predictable, it turns out to be nothing you'd expect. The only reason I couldn't get myself to give it five stars is that it didn't reach "amazing" for me because it didn't really blow me away as much as I wanted it to, but it was ABSOLUTELY something worth reading and I really did like it a lot. I also love how it focuses more on our main female character's inner self this time because she definitely puts herself out there more, especially towards the end. I am desperately excited to read part two!!!
Wow... okay. It's taken me forever to read this one but it's not because it wasn't good. It was actually GREAT! It's simply taken me so long because life gets in my way entirely too often. Grr. Darn life.
Ha. Anyways... back to the fabulous goodness that was Valley of Darkness part 1!
I can't tell you enough how amazing the world is that the author has created. I want to GO there! Just see it with my own eyes! The creativity is just... there are no words. Love it.
Now, here's the deal. I really liked the first book - just disliked the insta-love. Valley of Darkness - LOVED this one! I honestly knew I'd like it because I loved the world that was built in book 1 and I loved the characters. But this one blew me away. There was absolutely no way for me to predict some of the plot twists. I was speechless... I teared up a few times... I wanted to reach out and hug poor Molly on so many occasions. I mean... seriously did NOT expect what hit her life. Victor's character really found a place in my heart during this one. He was... so supportive and caring... Gosh, I just loved him.
If you haven't read book 1, you definitely can't just jump into this one. You NEED the background in book 1 before starting this one. Whelan's writing flowed seemingly effortless and things just... clicked for me. I loved the time difference in this Valley of Darkness. It was like it showed itself more and began to actually be a prominent concern. Loved it. Okay... Sorry guys. I keep saying that over and over again.
Overall, I loved this one even more than book 1. It seemed everything just fell into its place. Loved it! Can't wait for more!!!!!
I recieved an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. After reading book one, I must say that this book was as good as the first.
Molly and Victors's relationship is thriving. They have found a way to be together all of the time. However is all of her happiness worth all of the pain she will face after death stills her heart. Will it be enough to still love Victor?
There were some parts of the book that I thought could have been better. There were also some parts that I felt were not explained enough. However I know that this was an ARC copy, so some things will most likely change. Now since that is over, lets get to the good stuff. Awww, I hate crying over books, but that is what I did with this book. This book was really good, almost better than the first. I enjoyed reading more about Molly and Victor. I am so excited I got to read the second book so fast! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I finished it so fast, I just couldn't stop, and before I knew it, the book was over. Thumbs up to this awesome book, no thumbs up to this awesome series. Bring on more!
I would like to say thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC copy of this book to read and review. If you have not read book one yet, please get a copy of it, because book 2 is coming out soon!
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review... We find Molly in school, she is day dreaming of Arkana and uses her friends as alibi's so she can go and see Victor... Victor is asking Molly to introduce him to her parents so they don't have to hide their relationship from them. ( but in reality how do you introduce your alien boyfriend to Mom,and Dad?). Molly and Victor take her parents to Arkana, and they are beyond themselves that a wormhole is in Griffith Park...in a cave, and there is a whole other world on the other side similar to ours. (but they are peaceful, and advanced). Molly's parents are killed and she calls upon the worst Aunt known to children...her father's sister Darlene. Darlene ,is the kind of character you want to throw your book at... before they lay Molly and Nick 's parents to rest, she gets Pandora killed <\3 it was so sad that Molly's world is turned upside down in a fraction of a second... Victor tries to be there for her but she's a shell... you almost want to give her a hug and let her know it's ok... I can go on, and on this was such a great read, can't wait to see where Molly and Victor go from here...
The Valley of Darkness, Part 1 by A.B Whelan is the second book in the Fields of Elysium Series. (See my review of Fields of Elysium on January 21, 2013.) This is an exciting continuation of the story began in book one. As a sci-fi YA novel you will not be able to stop reading.
The author did an excellent job of tying the storylines and continuing to build on the relationship between our two heroes. With each new twist we see the story build and our heroes mature and grow. The story is easy to follow making it hard to put down once you start reading.
A.B. Whelan, as in the first book, does a great job of character development. By writing with feeling and emotion you quickly become attached to the characters and the story.
One recommendation to all readers is to read the first book in the series first. It lays the much needed groundwork for this story.
I really enjoyed reading The Valley of Darkness, Part 1 by A.B. Whelan. I highly recommend this book and series to all readers.
[Please note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.]
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. This book continues with Molly and Victor's relationship and Arkana, but is much darker.
Victor sneaks into this reality almost daily to visit Molly while he continues his Sentinel training. He continually pushes Molly to allow her parents to learn about their relationship. Molly finally agrees, and through an accidental meeting, the relationship and Arkana are learned about. Suddenly tragedy strikes, and Molly's parents are killed in a robbery gone wrong. Follow along as Molly tries to recover from the loss of her parents, tries to keep her relationship with Victor alive, tries to protect her brother, and decide what she wants to do with her life. Surprise twist at the end of the book leaves you panting for more. Cannot wait for the next installment to this book.
This is a series where the sequel is just as good as the first or even better. I fell in love with the first book where we learned of the parallel planet which move 5 times as fast as our and is truly peaceful.we learned of the hatred turn to love.
This book expands on that book in many ways, however it has a quality that makes it stand alone. We learn more about Molly and her trials through everything dark that this planet is know for. We see how her love for Victor also grows.
Let's not forget all the twist and turn and gut wrenching emotion you feel as you read. The cliff hanger at the end is tremulously overwhelming. I have to have the next book soon
Valley of Darkness is very well written I really enjoy how Whelan introduces new ideas and characters. She also has a unique way of entwining the two worlds in this incredible series I hope to read the second part soon. Be prepared if you can't handle sad books don't even open it. Valley of darkness part 1 ends when our heroine is in a veritable valley of darkness and depression. Shaky and Lost this is a story that will leave you begging for more.
It was hard for me to give this book such a lower rating when I rated the first book 5 stars. Now it's been a few years since I read book 1 but I remember loving it and being excited to read the next book in the series. With that being said the kindle version I have of this book is no longer available so maybe things have been corrected in the other book 2, but this version had so many mistakes. At one point an entire page and a half was just randomly repeated. This is a Young Adult read, but the main character of Molly seemed really young to me in this book, really immature. Almost annoyingly so. Part of me really wanted to just put the book down about 50% through but I was reading this book for three reasons. One was because I really wanted to, two was because it filled out the letter V in an A to Z book challenge I was doing and three it was giving me lots of words for a scavenger hunt I was doing on Goodreads. Because of the last two reasons, I kept reading. Lots of bad things happen in this book, there is little to no happiness. So the title Valley of Darkness is fitting. I don't think I will be reading on in this series even though I had already purchased book 3.
I'm so emotional about Victor and Molly. Their love is constantly being tested and some horrible things end up happening. I can't put this series down, just when you think things are going good, bam, another bad thing.
