Mythos Academy #6

Killer Frost

Rate this book
I’ve battled the Reapers of Chaos before–and survived. But this time I have a Bad, Bad Feeling it’s going to be a fight to the death … most likely mine.

Yeah, I’ve got my psychometry magic, my talking sword, Vic–and even the most dangerous Spartan on campus at my side, in Logan freaking Quinn, but I’m no match for Loki, the evil Norse god of chaos. I may be Nike’s Champion, but at heart, I’m still just Gwen Frost, that weird Gypsy girl everyone at school loves to gossip about.

Then someone I love is put in more danger than ever before, and something inside me snaps. This time, Loki and his Reapers are going down for good … or I am.

Killer Frost 4.5-5 Stars

I’M BIASED. I love this series, therefore I absolutely loved this final book! I’m absolutely heartbroken that this wonderful series has come to an end, but glad that it ended the way it did .

I’ll keep this short since I’m never really good at writing long reviews for the last book in a series so let me just say that if you’ve read all of the books up until this point and you’ve either liked or loved it: FINISH IT. It’s just as funny, just as emotional, just as action packed, and just as crazy as the previous 5 books! There was some romance in the final book (not as much as books 1-4 but definitely more than 5), but that s of course understandable since Loki returning to full power is sorta, you know, more important to focus on than a romantic relationship.

Anyways, thank you Ms. Estep for a wonderful series! I absolutely look forward to any plans you may have in store in the YA department!(:

Killer Frost by Jennifer Estep
6th and final book of the Mythos Academy series. YA paranormal urban fantasy.
The ultimate battle pits Loki against Gwen and her friends.

A tense and action packed novel from beginning to end. A shocking battle tactic and the ultimate sacrifice and win of good over evil. But how much of a win given the sacrifice? You’ll have to read it to find out!
A satisfying conclusion to the series.

The battle with the Reapers is coming to a head. It is crunch time and Gwen Frost is feeling the pressure. She feels the pending doom right around the corner. How can Gwen defeat Loki? The whole world's fate lies in her hands.

Killer Frost is they highly anticipated conclusion to Gwen's battle with Loki. Estep has woven a marvelous tale of gods and demi-gods with a modern day twist. I've gobbled up this series and Killer Frost wasn't an exception. I was once again captivated by the characters, the plot and this action filled adventure. Tying up all the loose ends and giving us the closure we needed, this story provided a twisty, turny, ride that will go down as one of my favorite young adult series.

I received this ARC copy of Killer Frost from Kensington Books - K-Teen in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication February 25, 2014.

I thought that this book did a fantastic job of wrapping up an incredibly entertaining series. I have spent the past 5 months working my way through this series and I was eager to see how things would work out. This story had all of the action, excitement, romance, and god/goddess appearances that I hoped to see. I was very satisfied with the way that things worked out.

This book picks up shortly after the events of the previous installment. This is the sixth and final book in the Mythos Academy series which I would recommend reading in order. Gwen is just trying to live a normal life but with Loki on the loose, I knew that things wouldn’t stay calm for long. Loki and the Reapers want an artifact so they are all being moved to Gwen’s school so she can use her magic to figure out which one they are after. When they can’t get the artifact, someone Gwen loves is placed in danger and Gwen will do anything to keep them safe.

This book kept me guessing. I couldn’t wait to see how Gwen would finally take care of Loki and I loved that there were a few surprises along the way. Gwen has grown a lot over the course of this series and I was impressed by how many now look to her as a leader. Her group of friends was amazing in this book and made sure to support her when she needed it most.

Tara Sands has been the voice of this series and has book an amazing job of bringing these characters to life. I love the fact that the character voices have been very consistent throughout the series. I think that she is able to add a lot of excitement and emotion to her reading. I listened to this book for hours at a time and do believe that her narration added to my enjoyment of the story.

I would not hesitate to recommend this book to others. I thought that this was an incredibly well-done series that had me reaching for my headphones time and again. I definitely plan to read more of this talented author’s work soon.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Kensington Books and purchased a copy of the audiobook.

I...uh...yeah. Breaking Dawn plot tactics, really?

What do I even say? What CAN I even say without spoiling?

As indicated by my star rating, Killer Frost was my least favorite book of the series, which is a bit of a shame for a series ender. Even so, 3 stars is still a halfway decent rating from me, so all is not lost.

FIRST, the not-so-great...

1. It took far too long to get to the point where the story grabbed me and took over.

2. Logan Freaking Quinn (her words oft borrowed by me) was not as shiny as he'd been in the past. I almost forgot that he was there.

3. Breaking Dawn all up in a fight scene - no.

BUT what I did like...

1. As usual, Ms. Estep put a lot of care and thought into her world and the characters who live in it. Groundwork that was laid in the very first book came back full circle.

2. I appreciate the variety of mythological gods and creatures the reader gets to learn about (or revisit). You can tell that this author loves her mythology...maybe not on the same level as Rick Riordan, but still. I had wished for more information at times than just face-value name dropping, but I've (unfortunately) read much sparser "mythology" founded stories than this one, so I'm happy for the most part.

3. Since it was time to get things wrapped up, at least Gwen got to go out in a blaze of glory. She'd never be able to fill Rose Hathaway's shoes, but the kid's got some guts, nonetheless.

I'm ready to close the page on Mythos Academy. It was a fun ride, but the time was due to end the story.

I'll definitely be curious to see what series is up next from this imaginative author.

I can't believe it's over. Sniff. Hold me...

The last installment of the Mythos Academy series was a doozy, and by far the best, in my opinion. I'm not going to say too much because it's obvious what goes down in this novel. Let's just say that all the characters are rounded up for one final showdown, even the ones you've probably forgotten about, and the way Gwen goes out is quite unexpected! In good news, the Mythos world may not be completely over. Ms. Estep may've closed the door on Gwen, but she left a window open for Gwen's cousin Rory, so it's entirely possible she may decide to revisit this world in the future.

If you're a Mythos fan, you'll appreciate the finality of Killer Frost, so pick it up!

The thing about series is that when you finish it you instantly missed the characters, as if there were in half of your lifetime.

I won't say this series is my favorite or anything, in fact I have a lot of problems with it. Like how the plot is so predictable, the characters are so annoying and so on. But in a way I really enjoy reading this, I love the protagonist more and more over time, the character development was amazing.

Overall I enjoy this series, as I said wasn't the best but it's interesting and a fun read.

-mild spoilers ahead-

eeeeh .. I'm sad. I used to love this series. Maybe I got too old throughout.

The main problem I got with it was how NOT subtle it is. I mean again, maybe I'm too old, but all those "mysteries" where sooooo clear to me. I mean when an author writes:"He first looked at his artefact, and then at the statues, as if they somehow were connected" ... I am like .. well if you say it like THAT .. they probably are, and its clear how .. duh.. but nobody connects them and is suddenly all suprised when they are. Really?
Secondly,

And sadly, I must say, I didn't believe in the romance AT ALL. The attraction from the earlier books I totally get, that was believable. But in this book they kept saying: I loooove you so much etc etc. And they only ever kept saying it. They didn't show in my opinion. I kept skipping the pages when Logan appeared because it actually didn't feel right to read about those two. I don't know what happened here but somewhere along the way there should have been more build up to this. Suddenly they know for sure they are going to stay together forever and to me they are still stuck in the attraction range. It all feels like the first crush in highscool to me. Nothing that has anything to do with love....

And the last problem .. the whole war thing ... the only ones attacking were always the reapers. And the Protectorate NEVER went into the offensive. They were always just deflecting what came their way. And they weren't even clever at that too. And Gwen was always this bad in fighting, but after she just got the hang of it she kills all those reapers who have been training all their lives? Sorry but that always felt too easy for me.

But what I always loved was Gwen, although she can be quite thick sometimes. But the change in her was well written throughout this series and apart from her lovelife always believable.

I'm really sad I lost interest in it, I used to love this series. Well at least I liked it enough to finish it, but it could have been made better I am sorry to say.

A very satisfying conclusion to the series. Love Vic and his nemesis sword. Also really love the wolf pup. If you don't end up craving some of grandma's sweets after this, I'd be surprised. Libraries haven't been this exciting since Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

So far, I haved loved everything I've ready by Jennifer Estep.
But this story felt like the last story, and the one before that, and the one before that.
So I think I am done with The Mythos Academy series.

All in all:

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS THE LAST BOOK I didn't approve that. I'm not ready to let go of the only high school I'd willing return to.

I suppose I will give props over the ending resolution (suck it Loki...but not Tom Hiddleston Loki. Reaper Loki. Very important distinction there) it made quite a bit more sense then I gave it credit it for at first. And wooo bloodthirsty battles.

But seriously how about a Short Story featuring Rory? Yes/yes?

+++

This is the last book of this series. The last book in a Young Adult Urban Fantasy series that dealt with every mythology ever and had a high school I'd kill to go to. I'm not ready for this.

Let me fess up right now - I kind of wanted to smack Logan around...a lot...in the last couple of books. And maybe also Gwen a little bit. And all of their classmates. Many of their teachers. Some of the other adults. Really it was going to be a slapfest in general if no one got on the band wagon that shit was getting real.

Despite how much I enjoyed this series I sometimes felt a little frustrated with how these people kept trying to do something normal when every indicator pointed to normal would lead to travesty. I had a surreal moment when Gwen found out that some classmates were betting on whether the Reapers would attack at the dance or not. Because honestly? Gwen was right, it wasn't even a close bet. They would because their MO was basically 'You want normal stuff? That's gotta stop right here while we just do something even more horrifying then last time'. I was so happy someone at least seemed to acknowledge it.

One of the strongest points for this series has always been Gwen's friends and the adults in her life. I know that sounds odd considering I wanted to slap them all around, but none of that had anything to do with how they were with each other. Gwen began the series as your typical outcast loner type. She had little enough interest in making friends and in the beginning they had little interest in making friends with her. But over the course of the six books (and numerous side stories), we've seen that Gwen doesn't just need her friends because it may have been foretold that way, she needs them because they keep her grounded. Without them she can't find her center and motivation (she was, in many ways, becoming very much like her cousin Rory).

The climatic battle between Gwen and Loki is, as you can imagine, rather epic. And the resolution is purely Gwen. When Gwen realized what she had to do it became very obvious was she was chosen as Nike's champion. Its hard to imagine that anyone else could have come up with such a perfect solution.

I did cry. This book isn't without its moments of heartfelt sadness and emotions. While I can say that by in large it ends on a good note, its not without lots of consequence.

And I really have to wonder at the body count in this series total. Because we're once again treated to the Red Shirt Brigade (aka the Reapers) as they just THROW themselves at Gwen's group. Literally. If the Reapers had trained half as hard as Gwen's group they may have had a better shot, but other then some fancy sword work the rank and file members all really kind of sucked.

Quick & Dirty: The final battle between good and evil.

Opening Sentence: “This is pointless.”

Excerpt: Yes

The Review:

Gwen and her friends are back in the last book of the Mythos Academy series. They have lost some and won some, but they still have to figure out what the next artifact that Loki wants and why. The Protectorate brings the rest of the artifacts to Gwen so that she can use her touch magic on them and figure out which one he wants. After touching several, she still can’t figure it out and then decide to go back to the school, but during the drive back they are ambushed and Gwen’s grandmother is taken.

Once back at the school Gwen quickly figures out they are after the candle and why. It is an artifact of Sol and has tremendous healing power. Gwen soon realizes they want to trade the candle for her grandmother, but Linus refuses to budge. So Gwen figures out how to steal the candle, and comes up with a plan that will turn its power against Loki. Soon she realizes she hasn’t fooled all of her friends and they set out to avoid the trap and save her grandmother.

Will Gwen be able to defeat Loki and save the world, or will he defeat them all?

Wow, what a ride this last book was. I went and read the whole series in preparation for this review. I loved every minute of it, and there were moments where I almost cried. What a beautiful ending! I have to say that Gwen is hands down one of my most favorite main characters of all time. She was loyal, loving and flawed. She made mistakes and tried her hardest and she was utterly willing to give everything she had more than once to save her friends and the world.

If you are looking for a fantastic YA series to binge on, then look no further. All of these books are out and this one series you will absolutely adore.

Notable Scene:

It was life. All I could do was stand there, clutching the candle, and let the intense rush of power wash over me again and again, each wave a little hotter and brighter than the one before, and sweeping more and more of me away with it, as though the violent spark at the center of my being was melting like the whit was of the candle should have been. It took my breath away. Still, try as I might, I couldn’t unwrap my fingers from the smooth wax, and I knew that I was in serious danger of falling so far down into the artifact and the immense power it contained that I might never come back to myself again. I felt like I was drowning in the heat, being burned alive from the inside out…

FTC Advisory: Kensington-Teen provided me with a copy of Killer Frost. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

I know I have said this numerous times in the past but it bares repeating, it will never get easy saying goodbye to a beloved series. Never.

And this is definitely one of those series that I really don't want to say goodbye too, I love them far too much and as I sit here and right this review, I already miss them and am sad that it is all over.

Gwen, Grandma Frost, Nyx, Daphne, Oliver, Logan, Nickamedis, Vic, Alexei, Metis, Ajax, Carson, they are like family now and you never want to have to say goodbye to family forever, well not unless they are the perverted uncle or the obnoxious cousin that will never leave you alone.

Either way, you know what I am saying. I knew this was going to be a hard read and one I was a little worried about. I was so nervous someone beloved would be hurt or killed again or worse, something awful would happen to Gwen herself and while I of course, won't say what happened, I will say there was one absolute epic battle that took place.

It was brutal, it was fierce and it showed no mercy. People were maimed, they were murdered and they were destroyed. There was lots of gore and blood and it all went down exactly like I thought it would, not that it was predictable mind you, but that is was a fantastic battle to the end.

This amazing group of friends were as wonderful as ever and I loved them all the more as they worked together and had each other's back. I love their unity, their understanding and their camaraderie. I couldn't have created a more diverse, great bunch of people if I tried. You can tell that Estep loves them, that she put her heart and soul into them and it shows in her writing and in the way she ended it all.

Am I happy with the way it was all brought together? Absolutely but I am sad too because it is really over, at least for now, for a good long time. And I am going to miss them just like I would miss anyone I cared about that went away to someplace I could never talk to them again but I am pleased too because it was a good solid ending. One with lots of promise and one with lots of hope. It won't be easy now for any of them, it never will be, but it will be happier and lighter and most of them will get their happily ever after and I love that. I love that we got glimpses of what will happen in the future, that was brilliant.

I love that all my questions were answered (especially about Raven!) and then some. I love that I feel contented and not cheated out of something I felt should have happened or out of something that didn't. I think a lot of people will be pleased with the way the author choose to end it and wrap it all up.

I have to say, for a series ender, I wasn't that impressed with this book. It seemed to be a lot of buildup for not a lot of payoff in the end. Not to mention, there were some pretty unrealistic situations happening during the big fight! I have to say, I did like the role that Rory took in the story, and the way Gwen finally handled the Loki situation, but it just wasn't 4 star worthy for me. I'm definitely interested in reading the spin off series, but only if I can get it from the library or on sale.

***This review has also been posted on Tangled in Pages

With this book comes to end to a series I’ve adored for almost 2 years. I’ve anticipated each installment eagerly and devoured them rather quickly and it breaks my heart a little to finally have to let go but at the same time I can genuinely say that I am satisfied. Estep did NOT disappoint with the finale. Perhaps there could have been a little less cheese but in the end the conclusion was well done.

The beginning had me a little vary. Logan and Gwen were not back to normal and there was still a certain distance to them. Logan was still heartbroken about what had happened back in Crimson Frost and I was a little worried at this point. I thought Midnight Frost would have ironed out some of the bumps but it hadn’t. With the kidnapping of her grandmother things became even worse and well.. I was worried I’d have to spend the whole book like I did Midnight Frost but there was nothing to worry about because that was sorted out easily.

Gwen is a very likeable female lead. She always makes a point to understand people’s points of views even if they don’t line up with her own. She may not agree, hey no one asked her to, but she respects other people’s opinions. Especially when it came to the situation with her Grandma. She HATED Linus for not trading the candle but at the same time she realizes she would have made the same choice had she been in his position because there is too much at stake. Gwen isn’t a hero. Yes she is Nike’s champion, yes it’s up to her to end the war but she isn’t a savior. She very much needs help from other people. She isn’t some lone wolf who can take care of everything on her own. She also takes responsibility for her actions and is loyal to a fault. She loves her family and is willing to do anything for her grandma and this just adds up to make Gwen a relateable and very down to earth female lead.

This series also has some of the most adorable relationships ever. From the one she shares with her friends, to the one with Logan, her family and Nickamedes. I love how her friends are ACTUALLY GOOD FRIENDS. They see through her bullshit with an ease that only true friends can. They support her and back her up and are willing to help her no matter the cost. Logan was also the sweetest guy ever. You probably wouldn’t have expected it in book one but he isn’t a bad boy cliché. He is ADORABLE. The two are the cutest couple too. Gwen doesn’t want to drag him into her mess not because she doesn’t trust him or couldn’t use help but because she doesn’t want to make him choose between her and his father and you can tell Logan is glad for that, later, even when he doesn’t say it and even when he actually HELPED. I love Grandma Frost and her relationship with her Grandma is adorable. It always makes me want to give mine a huge squeeze (accept that I am an awkward hugger). My favorite relationship in this series it the one between Nickamedes and Gwen; they’ve come such long ways since the beginning of the series, from barely containing their animosity to truly caring for each other. AND THEY FINALLY HUGGED.

All of that aside, I AM SO EFFING HAPPY ABOUT THE BATTLE SCENE. Holy crap Estep wrote an amazing battle scene. One that did my proud. The scenes before the battle were perfect. Dripping in tension, you could feel the emotions rolling off the pages. I was nervous, scared, frightened and really hoping that everything went well. When the battle commenced, I kid you not, there was music playing in my head. IT WAS PERFECT. The battle was VERY WELL DONE. I don’t think I can emphasize that enough (even with all my caps locks) because well it’s the thing we’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of this series. The show down. The end of it all. The fate of the series, whether I would like it or not, was all dependent on that one bit. The battle. And it didn’t let down. Emotions ran high, things were tense, and everyone was on the edge (including me).

My biggest qualm about this book was the aftermath of the battle. I was running on a high from the wonderful battle scenes and the high was ruined by an overload of cheese. I didn’t like how

One of the biggest plus points of this series is that the gods are actually kind of cool. They aren’t some kind of joke. They are serious beings with a shit load of power.

I still cannot quite wrap my head around the fact that this series is over. Admittedly, it isn’t a favorite or even an out of my mind experience, but I had a certain attachment to this series. Gwen was a great female lead and her adventures will be missed. To those who haven’t started the series, I’d definitely recommend this to you if you’re looking for a cute/fun series to latch on to.

3.5 stars. Considered rounding up to 4, but ... eh, upon further consideration, my feelings are closer to "liked it" than "really liked it".

Anyway. This has been a series that I've enjoyed - with some major reservations - from the start. I can't even begin to count the ways it's frustrated me, intensely, both with the way Gwen acted to start with, and with the writing. The repetitiveness. The word choice. The repetitions. The phrasing. The repeated words. The recaps (oh god, the recaps). The repeating of the same words, over and over again.

Aaaaaargh.

On the other hand, there was something about the books that kept me going. And I'm glad I did. Gwen grew on me, the recaps got a little less annoying once I'd caught up and read each book as they were released (meaning that I'd forgotten enough that some of the recaps actually came in handy) plus I have a feeling the repetitiveness in general was toned down (if not by a lot) in the later books. The plot line, while not exactly highly original, was well maintained; the romance, while annoyingly teenager-y and with Logan being a bit too bland, was given some time to develop over several books (and no triangle!!!) and never fully took over either the plot or Gwen's ability to focus on her real tasks. Also, while the supporting cast stayed two-dimensional, all the good guys were actually likeable (always a bonus, especially with rather flat secondary characters).

It's a very... airy series, I think. Entertaining. Not a lot of depth to it - but some, at least, which is more than a lot of books can say. Fairly simplistic in its good vs evil themes, with not too much ambiguity, but it worked for me.

This being the last book, it was obvious that the repetitive plots of the previous books - Gwen fights Reapers, there's a win but only a temporary one, Reapers will attack again, stronger than ever - would have to come to an end: it's Gwen vs Loki.

I ... um, I don't think there was a lot of doubt as to how this would go, given the general feel of the series. I actually rather liked the way the final battle went, the way things were wrapped up - I wouldn't have been happy with a resolution like this with some other series, but it fit this one. My only real niggle is that, even if it was in keeping with the overall feel of the entire series,

Anyway. As said above, I did enjoy the series. I think Percy Jackson has more real depth to it (and better writing), but for a mythology-infused action-focused YA series with a reasonably realistic teen girl protagonist who experiences some growth throughout the series, one could do a lot worse than pick up the Mythos Academy books. (Provided one isn't driven to throwing the book at the nearest wall in frustration over the repetitive writing, that is. Wink-wink-wink!)

(On another note, wtf is up with the cover for this final book? I sorta liked the covers for the first four books - nothing particularly amazing, but they were nice enough. The fifth book and especially this one, being body shots instead of just a face, seem to focus a lot more on, well, Gwen's boobies. Why? :-|)

Before I go any further, let me just start this off by saying, Killer Frost is the final installment of the Mythos Academy series. When I started, I had NO clue what so ever that Killer Frost was the end of the series. The summary gave no indication of this. Even the way Killer Frost was set up gave no hints… well, not at least until towards the end. You have been warned.

For the last few years, Mythos Academy series has been my go to for a great read. Whenever I needed a read to make me laugh, follow an adventure, and / or watch a cute romance unfolding, the Mythos Academy series was there.

Killer Frost was everything I had been hoping for in not only a Mythos Academy series ending, but also as an installment. Maybe it is because it was the finale, or something else, but Killer Frost had different feel to it. The pacing was spot on. The humor, as always, was great. Even though I love this series to pieces, Killer Frost sometimes made it felt like I was reading a book from a different series. Now don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed all the previous installments. Some more than others, but I have always felt like this series could have been shorter and it would not take away from the series as a whole.

With Killer Frost, I felt like everything was just right. Enough mystery / let's solve whatever it is we have to solve this time around. Enough romance. Enough action / battles scenes. Speaking of battle scenes, Killer Frost has some killer ones. Gwen is at her best. Gone, for the most part, is the self doubt, the insecurities. Just her and Vic (with help from everyone else, of course) fighting with all they have to defeat Loki and save the Academy. It was pretty epic.

Final Verdict:

Killer Frost ending is kinda bittersweet. I am sad to see this series go, but at least it went out with a bang and wrapped everything up properly. Plus, I am not sure how many more installments I could have taken if things continued to drag out. Again, love the series… but it was starting to go into House of Night territory. Definitely did not want to see that happen.

AFTER READING:

Series review can be found at Thoughts of a Hopeless (Book) Romantic.

That was completely unexpected. Somehow everything came together and worked? Wow.

********************
I really can't see how this will all end. After reading Midnight Frost it feels like the plot is still a bit standstill.

Update:
Um.. How long is this series going to be!?

And that's the ending to the Mythos Academy-series. It was alright but I would have liked to see more of some things, e.i. Gwen and Logan's relationship. Things went so fast without much place in the story, which made me feel kind of snubbed. I wanted more details and depth. Otherwise, I like Estep take on different myths from around the world, althought I'm still mad that Loki was the bad guy in the series... ^^
