Vacation Rules

Rate this book
Vacation Rules is an exploration of the psychology of travel: what makes for a happy vacation, and how greater happiness and well-being can be achieved through a different approach to planning and experiencing vacations.

The book is based on the PERMA model of positive psychology, and proposes 36 “rules” to assist its readers plan and enjoy their vacations. It suggests that rather than concentrating on the mechanics of travel—who we fly with, where we stay, which car we rent, which tour we take—we should first consider exactly why we want to go on vacation, what our current state of mind is, who we are traveling with, how we manage expectations and interruptions, and other issues of a strategic nature.

Written by a travel industry veteran and an academic focused on travel happiness, Vacation Rules distills the results of years of academic research into travel, happiness and well being into an easy to read format, and invites readers to submit their own "vacation rules" for publication in future editions.

A captivating, yet surprisingly quick read. "Vacation Rules" has shed a lot of light on why many of my past travels haven't gone so well, and I have new inspiration to begin planning my next trip. Each rule is succinctly articulated and well defended. I am thoroughly convinced that the advice offered through these rules will work. And what's better... I found my mind wandering across the landscapes of my past travels, remembering the best and the worst... and fantasizing about future adventures. I wish I had discovered a book like this earlier! Can't recommend it enough.

Vacation Rules touched home and explained simply why some holiday experiences just don't seem to satisfy our expectations while other experiences that may seem mundane stick in our memories fondly.

I'd recommend the rules to those who are seeking clarity on what they are trying to capture from their next vacation.
