Just entering second grade, Herbie Jones is just as likeable and mischievous as he is in the middle-grade series that kids have been enjoying for over twenty years.
Herbie Jones gets two surprises on his first day of second grade. One is meeting a new friend, Raymond Martin, on the way to school. The second is learning that the new teacher they have is Mr. Schnellenberger, not Mrs. (and Ray wants to call him Mr. Burger). Mr. S has lots of fun plans for his class to sail through second grade. And even though Ray is nervous about reading and Herbie about spelling, they are pretty sure this will be a fun trip because they can go on it together.
Suzy Kline, nee Weaver, was an elementary school teacher for 25 years and most of her books are based on the experiences she had while teaching. Suzy and Rufus got married and had two daughters named Jennifer and Emily. Now, more than 24 years after writing her first book, Suzy has traveled all over the United States helping children learn how to enjoy reading and writing.
Super cute. Can't wait for my beginning reader to read these.
My 7 year old really liked it. Luisa: I like this book because he is friendly to the new kid in his class, and he makes it easier for his new friend. I want to read more of Herbie Jones!
“Herbie Jones Salis into Second Grade” is a nice story about a boy Herbie Jones who begins second grade.
Most of the setting of the story takes place at the school where Herbie meets his new teacher Mr. Schnellenberger. He also makes friends with a boy Raymond who is new to the area.
The plot of the story is about Herbie’s first day in second grade. Lots of things happen. Herbie makes friends with a new boy in school and he meets his new teacher whom he likes.
The theme in “Herbie Jones” is meeting new people. In the story Herbie meets Raymond, he meets his new teacher, and he meets a classmate Annabelle.
The main character in the story is Herbie. Herbie is a nice boy who likes eating ice cream for breakfast if he can get away with it. Writer Suzy Kline does a good job of describing the character of Herbie through his actions.
The story is told from the point of view of Herbie. Herbie does not narrate the story but we see the events in the story unfold through his eyes.
My rating for this book is three stars. The book is most appropriate for younger students in grades one through three.
Second grade here is all about sailing, the entire year. And the story is about Herbie’s first day in second grade, where he made a new friend, Raymond, who just came from Minnesota.
What I think about the book:
The book is funny and helpful; it shows how to be a good friend, and how to help others feel good with themselves.
