4.5 stars - a must-read!

Clara Asscher-Pinkhof has made an important contribution to the holocaust literature with this book. Focusing on the perception of children, she is telling very short emotional stories illustrating different steps in the persecution of Dutch jews.

The statement of the Jury of the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis is summerazing the importance of this book in one short sentence: Mit einer tiefbewegenden Schlichtheit und Wahrhaftigkeit beschwört die Autorin, die selbst jüdische Kinder auf ihrem Leidensweg begleitete, die Bilder jener Zeit. Das furchtbare Geschehen wird zu einem dichterischem Gleichnis und zu einer Botschaft von Hoffnung und Versöhnung".

This book should have its place in every child's bookshelf.

I am very much into reading about people's experiences during the Second World War, especially from the jewish perspective. If I remember correctly, this is only one out of two books in this subject area that I didn't manage to finish. The narration style didn't suit me. The story is told from a child's point of view, and although the author did a good job at catching a child's tone thus making it sound more authentic, I still wasn't able to bond with any of the characters. There was a distance between us and I was unable to overcome it emotionally. Despite the fact that they were going through some very harsh times, I didn't feel sorry for them at all because they didn't feel real to me. Speaking of real, I am not sure if the book is based on true events (meaning if the "characters" did in fact live and go through the things depicted in this book) or if the author was just inspired by the gruesome history as a whole. I don't like the thought of rating this one star knowing the book might be based on somebody's life. It doesn't feel right. Therefore, I have decided not to rate this at all.

Sommige verhalen moeten verteld blijven worden. Het verhaal van de holocaust is er daar 1 van, en dit boek doet dat meesterlijk. De manier van vertellen, door de ogen van kinderen, maakt aan de ene kant sommige verhalen minder erg, en aan de andere kant maakt het het juist erger, omdat je als lezer weet wat er gebeurt en gaat gebeuren, en de kinderen dat in hun onschuld niet. Een absolute must read...

In Sterrekinderen bekijkt Clara de oorlog door kinderogen, die van de joodse 'sterrekinderen'. Kinderogen zien meer dan wij zien, ze zien de mooie, de nieuwe, de ongelovelijke dingen in hele 'normale' dingen.. of juist in de abnormale dingen die we nog steeds niet kunnen geloven. In korte verhalen/anekdotes of columns, net hoe je ze wilt zien doorloopt Clara haar tijd in de oorlog. Van het ghetto naar westerbork en de uitwisseling naar Palestina. Vooral het eerste gedeelte is sterk waarbij elk verhaal een onverwachte twist op het einde bezit. Het prachtige verhaal waarbij de kinderen nog trots zijn op hun eigen ster. Maar, het valt te verwachten, hoe verder we in de oorlog komen hoe grimmiger de verhalen. Hoe mensen zich proberen te redden in de schouwburg en hoe de kinderen verblijven in westerbork.

Sommige zullen zeggen dat het schandalig is dat Clara af en toe een luchtiger onderwerp of aangezicht pakt om de lezer te laten zien. Ik vind het een prachtig (nieuw en) integer perspectief waar al vele schrijvers hun pen al eerder aan hebben bevuild.

First published in Dutch in 1946 after the war, then in 1986 for English reader's, this book is all about the children... collected for transport in the Joodse Schouwburg (Star House) in Amsterdam to Westerborg (Star Desert) and then further to Bergen-Belsen (Star Hell). Who would be the final survivors that are transported to Palestine? Very, very few.

This was one of the most difficult WW2 survivor stories that I've read in my collection... heart-rendering stories of all the little star children of various ages.

If you are studying WW2, this is a must read.
