In the future, cancer becomes what war always struggled to be – the greatest threat to the existence of humankind. In their last dying breath, humankind sends five ships out to the stars in search of a cure that will bring them back from the brink of extinction. This grand undertaking is named The Daughters of Asclepius Project. Five ships were sent out to five different planets known to support life – Panacea, laso, Hygieia, Aceso, and Meditrina. This mission marks the first time humans have dabbled in hyperspace travel, and with limited technology, they are unable to communicate with Earth or each other. Each group of brilliant scientists is on their own, with the fate of mankind resting on their shoulders.
This story follows Dr. Beau Rowland, an evolutionary biologist and the lead scientist onboard the ship sent to Panacea. They have no clue what they are getting themselves into. Will they be able to solve the mysteries of a long lost civilization, survive the biological realities of an alien ecosystem, and find the universal cure that the Greek goddess Panacea is known for, all while trying to figure out who is sabotaging the mission? Or will they bring about their own destruction and doom all of mankind?
I don't read as much as I should, and I don't write as much as I'd like to. Life gets in the way sometimes.
Right now I'm focusing on school. Writing has taken a backseat to things that I feel are more important right now. I have no doubt I'll get back into writing, and finish my novel, but right now I just don't have the time.
So I really enjoyed Panacea: Part 1. It is one of those books that makes me wish that goodreads had a 10 point rating scale because I would give it a 7, but on a 5 point I can't quite give it a 4... boo. Any way, this is a really great idea, engaging and different. I really enjoyed the concept and the way the story developed. For idea, ingenuity, and creativity I give this book a solid 9. I don't really love science fiction but this one was very enjoyable. However, (don't you hate that), I feel like the author needed some fine tuning. The characters in general were fairly flat (though the love interest and the captain were very interesting). Also I felt like the author felt the need to hold my hand to make sure I picked up on all the different things that were going on. The prologue was AMAZING, hooked me right away, but I never felt like I left that "set the scene" stage of the book. Even when the action happened there was lots and lots of explanation (kinda like a bad horror flick). In spite of that the story it's self (and did I mention how much I loved the prologue?) made up for the style flaws. Over all a good book for those who like science fiction and are looking for something short and fun. Like a long weekend, airport, or bathtub book. :) Can't wait to see what parts 2 and 3 have to offer.
The story is an interesting one. Exploring a new planet for the first time, sabotage, the weight of humanity's survival on your shoulders. It's good! I gave it 2 stars because the story doesn't make up for the writing. I got my copy from amazon, and there were so many grammatical and homophonic errors! It really distracted from the story. Also, I thought the phrasing didn't flow well at times, and there was a bit of a redundancy issue. Simply for the story, I'll read part 2.
