It started out to be an very interesting story with Serena and Sebastian. You got a look at a young woman going to college trying to get an advisor for her music degree. In comes professor Sebastian Sorensen a young, Oscar winning composer. Serena seems to be an beautiful virginal like smart young lady. It started out as a request of give and take until it spun into something else. But later you find Serena is not this virginal like after all. Throw in mystery and your own detective work and you found a whole new story all together in this one affair. It sounds thrilling....but it's not. I think Serena is nothing more than a weak young lady that when something went wrong instead of talking to that person and get answers. She went back to what was familiar (Dom/Sub). I didn't care for the book. I have read a few books by Kailin Gow and like them but this one was not what I hoped for. Don't get me wrong, I loved "Finding you finding me" & "Saving you saving me" series or trilogy. I can't wait for the next book to come out on that series, even "Loving Summer" series. But I will not be waiting on Volume 2 of this series. Sorry it was just ok!!!

NOT QUITE WHAT I EXPECTED...strange to say the least!, March 29, 2013

This review is from: The Protege (Kindle Edition)

In all honesty, I don't really know how to rate this much more give it a review. What with a lot of five star reviews it has received I'm hesitant to even try, afraid I won't do it any justice. In my eyes and I say this humbly, the story goes against my good sense of right and wrong. I know this is just a story but behind any good book is a great story and I have strong reservations claiming this to be that. That of a good story that would leave you feeling happy, smiling, that sense of feeling exhilarated, refreshed, inspired, fulfilled even. Surprisingly, I have not encountered anything close to this plot, I admit the author has a clever and imaginative mind to come up with this kind of story. Though it has its merits, twists and turns thus making the heroine ( you got it right, the heroine, not the hero! ) seem like a sicko with disturbing proclivities. Making the Hero looking pathetic after discovering and witnessing the heroines sickening truth, why strip him of his pride? It goes against the earlier description of how strong and solid kind of a man he is. Around the next half of the book he's described of being spineless even, can't stand up to his own harsh condescending meddling pathetic excuse of parents, whom are aware of an impending threat against their son yet they chose to be quiet about it. Why? I just don't quite get it, aren't parents supposed to protect their own children no matter? aah, frustrating! Maybe I'm just naive, still clinging and believing in that wholesome, feeling good after reading a book. After all, that's the whole purpose of reading isn't it?...to escape our stressful world of reality temporarily, clear your mind, take a breather and relax and indulge in another world while we read, no stress, no heartache, just pure entertainment and a feel good mood...not leave you feeling down, disheartened and disturbed.

Please read this, it might be something you'd see differently and perhaps even enjoy. Besides, the writing is good...as for me, I really tried to like it but sadly, it just isn't for me.

This was a great story. This was Kailin Gow's first adult book. I thought it was a great adult debut. The story was about Serena Singleton is a young musical composer who is looking for an advisor. She wants the advisor to be the sexy, and charming, Professor Sebastian Sorensen.

However, their first meeting did not end very well. Sebastian Sorensen gave her an ultimatum after she was late for her appointment and asked her to be a date to his family's fundraiser. Then, they begin a relationship that is really steamy.

Serena Singleton is a very talented woman who wants to be a composer just like Sebastian Sorensen. She is smart and sweet. She has been through some bad things in the past such as the fact her father left her at the age of 8 and her mother's passing. She is also a bit hotheaded.

Sebastian Sorensen is a very admirable professor and composer. He is adored by all of his students as he helps them bring out what is necessary for their music. He is from a rich family. However, his family does not care about the well-being of Sebastian, but more about themselves. He is sexy and charming.

The story gets a little bit weird. As the story progresses, another character named Price, comes into the picture and takes Serena and makes him his property. The ending was sad as Serena and Sebastian have to stop loving each other. Overall, a great adult debut.

This book started out interesting, but then when the heroine all of the sudden went back to her Master, who we knew absolutely nothing about... Nor did we know that the heroine had been in the BDSM lifestyle & was a submissive. Had the author wrote about that in the beginning of the book or wrote a prologue about her life before with her Master, then everything would have made sense. However, that is not what happened. We were lead to believe our heroine was one way, then all of the sudden other things are thrown in to the mix & the entire story no longer makes sense.

Then, she goes from practically being in love her the hero to fu#%-ing her Master and being OK with that? Nope.... I just couldn't continue with the story. Plus, the writing was broken, the story didn't flow very well & there were a lot of really cheesy lines.

Kailin Gow has blown me away with The Protege. I have always been a fan of her books and her writing, but if I had never read a book by her before, this book would definitely make me a huge fan of hers! I read it one day! It is beautifully written and the character development is amazing and definitely makes the book so much more enticing!!

The dynamics between Serena and Sebastian is amazing. Serena does her best to keep her sights set on her main agenda, obtaining the best adviser and becoming a talented composer. However, the sexual tension is too hard to fight between her and Sebastian. And it doesn’t help that Sebastian doesn’t hide his feelings and desires from her. These two quickly come to an agreement that will help them both and not interfere with the student/professor relationship.

As the story unfolds, we learn a lot about Serena and Sebastian. Sebastian doesn’t fit well into his family and their way of living. Serena didn’t have the best upbringing yet did her best to get where she is today. These two mold perfectly together and move with such ease. However, not everything is as it seems. Secrets will always come out. The twists in this book are amazing!! It will leave you sitting at the edge of your seat!!

I love Kailin’s writing style – she doesn’t always have to go into great detail to give you the image that you want. A few words alone and the whole picture in painted! The scenes between Serena and Sebastian are hot and sexy! You can feel the heat just rolling off of them. The banter between all the characters is great – you get a pretty good idea of how each character comes across, especially when they are interacting together. I was drawn in from the beginning and couldn’t put it down. Very well written!!

If Sebastian Sorenson had been a professor or advisor at my college, no doubt I would have majored in that field just to get close to him!! I absolutely want to know where the next book will take us and can’t wait for it come out!

Was pleased to be one of the beta readers for the ARC on this, though my copy came late...

This is a slight departure from Kailin Gow's "usual" writing, but only slight as her character building, human interactions, and emotional undertones still are a major part of the story. It is a departure in that it is aimed at a slightly more adult audience due to the level of steaminess included in it. The storyline left a person wanting more, and thankfully she is working on the next book n the series already! There are characters barely introduced in this first adult novel that I am hoping she will go into greater depth in the next book. Her characters, even the minor ones, seem to intrigue me.

Of course, the main male and female leads are fantastic. It is not easy to box one of Gow's protagonists into a mold; I feel there is a lot more to be seen from both Sebastian and Serena that we have barely seen the surface of. There is more back story there than has been given in The Protege, leaving me wanting, NEEDING, to know more of them.

The sexual content in the book is done well, not too graphic but not tip-toed around. There is undertones of S&M, without fully diving into unneccesary smut levels. It is sexy, provocative, as opposed to cheesy and overplayed.

Definately worth a read whether or not you have read any of Gow's other works ( which I can also highly recommend ).

I'm not really one to like leaving a bad review, but I really didn't understand this one??...
It seemed all over the place towards the end. Like the author had all these thoughts of where she wanted to go with the story, but it wasn't put together very well. The editing also didn't help in some of my confusion. I spent more time towards the end going back over some of the paragraphs to make sure I grasped what she was getting at. The character development was subpar, meaning she started to draw you in in the beginning but it fell short somewhere, not sure where. But I honestly won't be looking for the second one. Sorry

This book just didn't do it for me.
I felt that she was trying to get into the BDSM market,50 shades - and it just fell flat.
I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but it feels like 2 different books.
It does end in a cliffhanger, which is usual. I am just not sure whether I will bother
with the sequel.

WOW!!!

When I was asked to read and review The Protégé, I had no idea what the book was about, only that it was an adult romance. So let me tell you this book surprised me and there were things about it that I did not expect to turn out the way they did. During the initial few chapters, The Protégé seemed to have a Fifty Shades, Gabriel’s Inferno vibe to it. Now stop your ‘it’s all been so overdone and why can’t an author get original’ rant. Most of you loved those books and bookmarked your favorite chapters to reread. Here’s the thing, Kailin Gow did change it up and took it to a new vibe. I did not see it going in the direction that it did. I am not going to go into any detail because that would involve spoilers and I think you all need to read this to know what I’m talking about. Here’s what I will talk about…

Sebastian Sorenson is a man—not a boy, not a guy but a man. He is a distinguished composer and professor. He is sinfully gorgeous yet he is focused on his career.
Serena Singleton is focused on her musical education. She has given up things in order to leave a past and create a future. Never did she think that Sebastian would have such an impact and effect on her. Together they will test new waters.
Someone wants to stir these waves.

The characters in this book were well developed considering this is a shorter novel at 284 pages. Kailin Gow does an excellent job of reeling you in and then tossing you back. Throughout the story you have a nagging in the back of your mind. I was constantly trying to figure ‘what the deal’ was with certain characters. I kept thinking there is something up and when I thought I had figured it out, she pulled the carpet out from me and I sat there sayin’ WTF? Did that just happen?
This bodes the same for the plot. She keeps you guessing the whole time and never do you see what is coming. I think I must of reread the last couple of chapters at least 3 times because I didn’t believe the turn of events. I love that this is how the story played out. Absolutely brilliant! There were a couple little things in the initial chapters (description of both Serena and Sebastian’s apartments) that I thought repeated in a couple of chapters. I just remember thinking,, she already told me that. As I said though, minor.
Secondary characters were actually pivotal to this story and Gow did a great job of creating their story and creating characters that you could clearly picture in your mind.
By the time I got to the end of the book, I found that I was quite absorbed into the story. So much so, that the bit of a cliffhanger (even though I know the next book is just around the corner), had me wanting to throw my iPad but in a good way. ;)
Kailin Gow, you definitely had me questioning situations and characters and then left me with my jaw hanging. I loved that—to me it means the book has done its job. You have done your job as a good writer. Kailin Gow brought sensuality, sexiness, thrill, suspense and a certain sincerity to the characters and story. Can’t wait to see what is in store for the next book. There are definitely a couple of ways it could go. Eeeeeppp!!!!!! D 4/5

This is Kailin's step into the Adult romance genre. She has given us amazing titles in the YA genre, which are always great reads. Her Loving Summer series and Finding You, Finding Me series was a step in this new direction. She has written some of my favorite characters and I am adding Sebastian to my list.

While setting up my bookshelves and cleaning up my kindle books I noticed that I have more books by Kailin Gow than any other author. She just amazes me with her writing. She can write a story that on the surface is entertaining and draws the reader in but underneath there are relevant issues woven in the mix. She makes her readers aware of issues like bullying, male and female abuse (physical and mental), health (mental & diabetes),and many others. She has a talent for bringing to life a story line with characters that the reader will attach to. This book was no different. It was a little bit edgier than what I was used to from her but I loved it no less. She threw in a twist with one of the characters and I had to go back and make sure I didn't miss something. Very sneaky, Kailin, very sneaky indeed. That intrigued me the most. I was convinced I had Serena figured out and then BAM, it was like where did that come from. Things just got real interesting.

Sebastian is my new book boyfriend. Don't worry Danny Blue, Kian, Nat and Collins/Daggers you still have a place in my heart. You just have to make a little room for Sebastian. On the surface I thought Sebastian was cool and collected but the more I read about the dynamics of his family relationship I started to see some chips in that armor. He was gorgeous, musically talented, and prominent. His family was very non supportive of his choices. Even as a grown man he wanted their approval on some level. He finds in Serena someone that he wants to know and protect. She treats him differently than all the others. She is his match but he soon finds out that she may be more than a match for him. It gets real interesting in the last few chapters. What's going to get me reading the next book is what Price is up to, what Serena is up to, and where Sebastian fits into all of it. Quite a dilemma you left us with Kailin.

Now onto the love scenes. For those of you that need to have the temperature rise when reading your books, don't worry Kailin has given that to you. I like the way those scenes did not detract from the story. They weren't just added to be added. The love scenes play a role in the story like they were another character in a sense. I thought the whole book was well done. Kailin writes with purpose in mind and this reader has never been disappointed.

This is Kailin's step into the Adult romance and I have to say it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Serena Singleton and Sebastian Sorenson Have chemistry that is off the charts. Steamy, hot and certainly sparks you will see flying.

A chance encounter between the pair turns out to be an arrangement that takes them on a journey they never anticipated. Through a whirlwind of twists and turns we find out Sebastian’s dark past – Serena’s hidden past and many other things that were certainly unpredictable.

The storyline takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, to pasts between the pair we never saw coming and other factors entwined throughout this read.

The storyline was fluent and easy to read and follow. The chemistry I felt a bit floored when Serena returns to her Master whom is unbeknown a rival. I felt like I had done a big loop - I didn’t think this mixed well among the story – but Kailin made it work none the less and I read on – after my first initial thoughts. It certainly left me curious as to the next encounter.

Serena was a likeable enough character – when we think we know her story we are given a completely different side to her. I certainly enjoyed the mystery within the pages.

The BDSM elements mentioned were very minor – those who know the lifestyle or read about it will find it mild in comparison to most but still titillating none the less.

A few things Ill mention – as far as the storyline goes. Certain words used to many times on one page get rather repetitive, no background into Serena’s past , aka I’d like to have seen more history between her and her master. But this didnt affect my enjoyment of the story .

As a parent - I can’t relate to Sebastian’s parents. This stuck like a lump in my throat... But how very true this can be in real life – The rich and famous, tend to think only of themselves and how this may impact on their lives... Sad but very true. Others – turn a blind eye, it doesnt matter what side of town you come from some people just dont know how to protect the ones they love. I can see why Seb is the way he is towards them !

Overall – I really enjoyed Sebastian and Serena’s story (The Protégé) Kailin has done a great job delving into the adult genre.

These characters are likeable, flawed and certainly not perfect. Child hood abuse is brought into the storyline so for all those that it offends this may not be for you. Mention of the BDSM lifestyle is also present.

This book gave me the wow factor. It knocked my socks off. I was so excited to get this book from Kailin. I delved into it as soon as I could. I was so absorbed by this story I just couldn't put it down. The whole book had a pretty nice flow to it. A very well constructed and thought out story from the beginning until the end.
This whole story is about Serena and Sebastian. Sebastian is a pretty famous composer. Serena is a music student in need of an advisor. As you can imagine these two have a pull toward one another that is hard to deny. When an attraction is a strong as theirs, the only choice is to give in to their wants. Serena and Sebastian seemed to be world a part. The one thing in common they do have is music and possibilities of so much more.

Their relationship develops naturally through the attraction they feel towards one another and both of their love of music. This book was so tastefully mature on addressing such adult issues. Serena and Sebastian were smart, talented, and have naturally beautiful hearts. This is not your average new adult romance. Their are plenty of twists and turns, danger, mystery, and passion. I call that the wow factor.

I made this a short review so not to spoil it for anyone. I would go into with an open mind and understanding that sometimes there are things out of our control. Some secrets and truths need to be known at the right time. There is a perfect time for everything. That is how I felt when reading this story. So go a head and give it a try. It will definitely intrigue you and open up your heart.

Serena Singleton wants to be a music composer and to graduate she need a faculty advisor. She thinks she has the perfect person in mind Professor Sebastian Sorensen. However things don’t work out how she thinks they will. From their first meeting when Serena shows up late there are sparks. Sebastian proposes an ultimatum Serena accompany him to a family fundraising dinner and they can talk about his becoming her advisor. From that moment on things really heat up.

We learn more about Sebastian. He is from a wealthy family and although he is a very successful composer he still does not have his families approval. We see a man who wants nothing more than his parents to be proud of him. When Serena steps up and cares for him he is blown away.

Serena is a intelligent woman with an amazing music ability. Even though she had a rough child hood she has overcome and wants nothing more than to be a successful composer like Sebastian.

Overall this is a great read. The tension between the 2 characters keeps the story interesting and the twists thrown in at the end leave you wanting more. Thanks goodness I have the next book in hand ready to read.

At first this book seemed like your typical college student crushing on her super hot, extremely talented professor. However, it is NOTHING like it at all. Serena is a music major looking an advisor for her graduate studies and wants Professor Sorensen because he is an accomplished composer who has won an Oscar and a couple of Tony's for his work. She thinks he'll be perfect to guide her into a successful career. She is convinced she will not be attracted to him like every other female seems to be. However, they seem to be drawn together.

As the story progresses, secrets are revealed and pasts are revealed. Serena's past catches up to her and she finds herself struggling with herself again. Serena's story breaks my heart and frustrates me all the same. I ADORE Sebastian (Professor Sorensen)!!

The end left me wanting more! Can't wait to read book 2!

I loved that not only did this book encompass the erotic romance genre, it was full of suspense and had moments where you really couldn't predict what was going to happen next. Definitely a recommended read!

This is my first experience with one of Kailin Gow's books and wow! Where has Kailin been in my life??

The Protege provided every genre that I love in this book!

We are introduced to the successful, sexy, Professor Sebastian & the sweet, innocent, yet a siren Serena.

They have an attraction to one another that is steamy and the emotions for each character is well written to the point where you feel that you are right there emotionally.

We come to a point where danger is lurking in the shadows. Sebastian & Serena both are in danger and Sebastian always will put Serena first.

With on the edge suspense, sensual scenes, mild bondage...in the end The Protege leaves me wanting more...exactly how I want to feel when I read a story, onto The Innocent ~Shannon

Sebastian Sorenson is a lot of things. Sexy. Wealthy. Artistic and brooding. Yep that sums him up. Did I mention sexy?

Serena Singleton is beautiful. Sexy. Secretive and alluring.

Add the two together and you get off the charts chemistry.

Will Sebastian give in and fulfill his desires for the lovely Serena? She wants him for her academic advisor. He just might want more...

This book has twists and turns galore. Will Willow get her way? Who is really involved and what do we really know about the beautiful and sweet Serena? Sometimes things are not as they seem.

Oh the tangled webs we weave. Take a chance and see for yourself. You will be hooked.

Well done Ms Gow. Now on to book two. I have questions and I need answers...

The Protege is a good book.

What annoyed me was the ending. I don't know if it's personal or anything. But When Serena went back with her "Master" I got annoyed. When the going gets tough go back to the person you left a year ago. He obviously isn't good for you but you go back.

Sebastian and Serena make a good couple. Maybe the relationship went a little too fast, but I'm fine with that.

The mystery of who poisoned Sebastian and messed up his apartment was good. That made the story interesting. When I found out with was Price A.K.A Serena's Master, that was a shock. I thought it was Michael, Willow's brother.

I can wait for The Innocent which is the next book, but I will be reading it.

I found it difficult to rate this book...
I'd give the first 75% of this book 4 stars - I thought the storyline was great and loved Serena and Sebastian together. But when it hit 75% and someone from Serena's past comes back into her life, their relationship and the events that follow just didn't flow for me. All of a sudden too much was happening and changing and I started to lose interest.

I have to say that I have read and loved several other series of books by Kailin, and am interested in checking out her new Master Chef series; I'll just be staying away from this series...

This book could have benefitted from more editing, as there were a lot of spelling, grammar and sentence structure errors, which, coupled with the cliffhanger ending, are what led to my four star, instead of five star review. Overall I found the story and characters very engaging and I will be reading The Innocent to see how the relationships between Serena, Price and Sebastian end up. I thought when it started that I was reading a replay of Gabriel and Julia with the Professor/student romance....boy was I wrong!

I just finished this book and I have nothing good to say about it. I wish I could give it no stars. First of all, the characters were not that like able. The storyline and overall writing were dull. And then all of a sudden there was this Master and these bdsm elements that suddenly appear near the end of the book and the heroine morphs into another character. Weird and not cohesive. Sebastian was a real sap, too.

I really liked this story through most of the book. The last part, suddenly out of nowhere, changed that. I felt like it was almost a mistake, like it was cut and paste from a completely different story. I was left with an impression of WTF!?

I may consider reading the next book to see if it helps this come together for me. I do hesitate though because I feel so mad about loving this until the strange way it ends and ruins all things I felt for it.

I felt like this book was sort of all over the place. The premise was interesting and I liked it in the beginning, but there were so many random plot points thrown in that just didn't fit. It didn't flow well or make sense, really. Plus some of the dialogue was so unbelievably cheesy I couldn't even take it seriously.

Unfortunately, this was a flop for me. :(

I love Kailin Gow's YA books -Loving Summer, Never Knights, Finding You, Finding Me. The Protege is her exciting introduction into Adult Romance. The Protege sucked me in and kept me interested in the lives of Sebastian and Serena. Plot twists had me screaming at the book and left me wanting more! I can't wait until The Innocent is released!

Well this one kindof upsets the genre apple cart! First--whoa. Big twist that I didn't see coming. And two, I'm still not clear on what totally happened. I hope that's intentional. Second book is due this summer, reportedly. It's well-written, with an interesting backdrop of the university & composing.
