Unable to cope, they are sent to live with their Grandfather on a wildlife sanctuary in rural Colorado. Amidst their unresolved grief and resentment, they each have strange encounters that make them wonder exactly what kind of wildlife their Grandfather is protecting.

When a secret world of cursed men, mythical beings, and mounting stacks of magical paperwork is revealed, the Rose siblings begin a journey into the heart of magic. One sibling will risk their life for a simple wish, another will save them, and one will see the darker side of magic that threatens them all.

If the author hadn’t at one time been my student, I wouldn’t have known about this YA book, and I’m glad to have read it. Having three teen focalizers works: the middle sibling, Sarah, is 15 and sees more interior details of house and furnishings than her brothers might. Older brother Tyler at 16 tries to remain aloof but doesn’t always succeed, and younger brother Benji, approaching his fourteenth birthday, is appropriately the first to experience the fantasy elements of their new home. Their grandfather’s house in Colorado would already seem strange to these teens from Mobile, but on top of that it’s so elaborate that I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t just been watching HGTV--and it’s in the middle of a Sanctuary for all kinds of unusual beings besides. So it’s a good story, balancing real-world themes (coping with the untimely death of a parent, the power of love to heal) with action and startling, non-human characters. A drawback of the e-publishing format is the distracting lack of copyediting: “you’re” instead of “your,” a character named Jessie and Jesse on the same page, plurals formed with apostrophes. The ending is satisfying, while leaving the door open for a sequel, and I look forward to it.

I've been looking for a new and interesting book to read and I found it in Sanctuary, by Evelyn Edgar Price! Sanctuary is a very well written book targeted at young adults but is truly a book for all ages! I loved this book yet it is also something that my daughter can read when she is old enough. I was interested right from the start and though I tried to predict the next move of characters or story line in the book I could not. The characters are easy to relate to and likable. The book follows the story of 3 children (well, teenagers) who recently lost their Mother and were sent to live with their Grandfather on a wild life sanctuary in Colorado. The author does not fail to go in to detail to give you a clear picture of the sanctuary and the characters. I couldn't wait to see how the book progressed and how it was going to end. I hope there is more to this story as I love to be enthralled in a good series!

Evelyn Edgar Price is an up and coming author and I can't wait for her next work to be released! She is quickly becoming one of my favorite Authors! I've recommended this book to all of my friends and am sure they will love it as much as I do.
