About the author

Durga Bhagwat's notable works include biography of Rajaram Shastri Bhagwat, Pais, a collection of articles based around religions, their literature and practises and Vyas Parva, a book about her study of Mahabharat. She studied religious literature, particularly Buddhist, works of Marathi saints from Dnyaneshwar to Tukaram, major Sanskrit works of Vyas and Adi Shankaracharya. Her book 'RRitu-chakra', detailing the nature (particularly trees and flowers) in each Indian month, is perhaps her most famous work. In early 1940s during her stay in forest, she tried to cook a vegetable which turned out to be poisonous and she was bed-ridden for years. The recovery was slow but it helped her observe the changes in the nature over the 12-month cycle, and spurred her to write articles on each seasons. She was a good cook having inspiration from Smt Seetabai Bhagwat,her paternal aunt.Though she has not written any specific book on this topic,had written many articles on this topic.She was much interested in crafts even,on which she wrote many articles.She was a lady who was interested in learning any new thing and was ever curious to have knowledge.That is why perhaps Va Pu Kale calls her as 'Marathi Saraswatachi Sarswati'.
Even though good-looking in her young age, Durga Bhagwat never married. The reason according to her as told in a personal interview was that she spent several years of her youth in research, during which she was also the victim of food poisoning and by the time she recovered from it, it was too late.
Her idols throughout her life had been Vyasa, Gautama Buddha, Adi Shankaracharya, Henry David Thoreau, and Shridhar Venkatesh Ketkar.

महाभारत ही एक अशी कथा आहे जिच्याबद्दल जवळजवळ प्रत्येक भारतीयाला वेगळीच ओढ आहे. कौरव पांडवामधील ती भाउबंदकी, द्रौपदीचे वस्त्रहरण, पांडवांचा वनवास, युद्ध , श्रीकृष्णाने सांगितलेली गीता असे चित्र लगेच डोळ्यांसमोर उभे राहते. या कथेतील ज्ञान, तत्वज्ञानांवर अनेक पुस्तके आहेत. त्यापैकी हे एक.
आपण जे महाभारत वाचले, बघितले त्याकडे बघण्याचा एक वेगळाच दृष्टीकोन या पुस्तकातुन मांडण्यात आलाय. या कथेतील दहा व्यक्तिमत्वांवर लेखिका आपल्यापरीने परिक्षण करते. ते वाचता वाचता आपले विचार त्या व्यक्तिमत्वाविषयी बदलु लागतात. कदाचित काही विचार न पटणारे पण असतील. पण पुस्तक वाचुन संपताच या कथेविषयी अजुन जाणुन घेण्याची आपली तिव्र ईच्छा निर्माण होईल. माझ्यामते हाच य पुस्तकाच "जय" आहे.
पुस्तक वाचताना तुम्हाला मराठीचे साधारणपेक्षा जास्त ज्ञान लागेल. कारण प्रत्येक पानावर कमीत कमी एक नवीन शब्द आहेच. महाभारत या विषयाबद्दल ओढ असेल तर हे पुस्तक तुम्ही चुकवु शकत नाही.

महाभारतावर जी चिंतनपर पुस्तकं वाचनात आली त्यापैकी हे नक्कीच लक्षात राहण्याजोगे आहे. चरित्रपर पुस्तके खूप जाहली. मृत्युंजय पासून ते युगंधर पर्यंत एकेका कर्त्याच्या बाजूने अक्खे महाभारत विषद केले गेले. पण व्यासपर्व हे त्या सर्वांपेक्षा वेगळे ठरते. व्यासपर्व हे दुर्गाबाईंना दिसलेले महाभारत आहे.

हे पुस्तक फार मोठे नाही, पण गुणवत्तेला पृष्ठसंख्येचे बंधन नसतेच. दुर्गाबाईंची लेखणी धारदार तशीच ओजस्वी. बऱ्याच दिवसांनी उत्कृष्ठ मराठी वाचनात आले, आणि आपले मराठी किती कमकुवत होत चालले आहे ह्याची जाणीवही झाली. अनेक प्रकरणामध्ये त्या महाभारतातील अनेक मोठ्या व्यक्तींचा परामर्श घेतात. ह्या प्रकरणांची नावे सुद्धा थोडक्यात व्यक्तीचा परिचय करून देतात. त्यांना दिसलेला कृष्ण, भीष्म, विदुर कुठलाही आडपडदा न ठेवता त्या आपल्यासमोर मांडतात. हे पुस्तक म्हणजे थोडक्यात एक मुक्त चिंतन म्हणायला हरकत नाही.

महाभारतामधे ज्यांना रस आहे आणि थोडक्यात पूर्ण कथावस्तू माहित आहे अशांसाठी हे पुस्तक नक्कीच विचार करायला लावणारे ठरेल ह्यात शंका नाही.

महाभारत या महाकाव्याचा आढावा तोही एखाद्या शल्यचिकित्सकाच्या कौशल्याने करायचा तर तो दुर्गाबाईंसारख्या विदुषींच करो जाणोत. धर्मापासून ते अर्जुनापर्यंत कृष्णापासून ते दुर्योधनापर्यंत आणि द्रौपदीपासून ते कुंतीपर्यंत पात्रांचाआणि त्यांच्याद्वारे मानवी भावविश्वाचा काढलेला महापट व्यासाने काय कौशल्याने रचलाय ते आपल्याला दुर्गाबाई लिलया दाखवून जातात.

हे पुस्तक वाचायला जरा घाईच केली.
म्हणजे, आधी पूर्ण स्टोरी न वाचता, डायरेक्ट कॅरेक्टर चे पोस्टमार्टेम वाचलं.
असो.

यामुळे का होईना मी महाभारत या विषयात आलो.

It's said original EPIC was comprised of 8000 "shlokas" but later on many more parallel subtracks got added from time to time swelling it three fold to 25000 "shlokas"...
High FOG INDEX OF MARATHI and hence not an easy read but density of relevant meaningful content is bound to please readers who are quite inquisitive or of scholarly bent of mind or both...
Extremely studious creation substantiated by authentic research and cross references.
Enjoy or avoid per personal liking since afterall it's absolutely subjective matter...

one of the best books I read in the year 2022. and I'm aware everyone knows Mahabharat in India and its character, but the way Durgaji explained the characters that how Vyas created those, and how tiny plots and details may have been there. it was mind-blowing absolutely. Must read book for every Indian or those who love Indian literature.

दुर्गाबाई भागवतांनी मांडलेलं हे महाभारत चिंतन म्हणजे विचारांच्या लाटेवर ज्यांना स्वार व्हायला आवडते त्यांच्यासाठी पर्वणीच, महाभारतातल्या एकेका पात्राच्या अंतरंगात डोकावून पाहताना दुर्गाबाईंनी अतिशय निष्पक्ष चिकित्सा केली आहे. उत्तम पुस्तक, पण वाचण्यापूर्वी महाभारताची व्यवस्थित ओळख असणे महत्वाचे.

अतिशय सुंदर चिकित्सने लिहिलेलं पुस्तक, महाभारतातल्या पात्रांच्या अंतरंगात डोकावताना कुठल्याही प्रकारचा पक्षपातीपणा जाणवत नाही, पण वाचण्यापूर्वी महाभारताची व्यवस्थित ओळख महत्त्वाची.

Mahabharat is one of greatest epic & to present a review on it in a shortest but comprehensive manner is greatest ever...Only Durgabai can do that. Her language no doubt is like a sweet fruit juice...u just keep devouring it & you dont feel weary-some. She puts up her points one by one & readers easily absorbs the matter whatsoever complex it could be...Mahabharat itself is very complex... analyzing its characters in 13 parts pointwise is not children play...for sure it reflects her command over language, her observation, her analytically mind & a simple but structured way of communication...makes this book a must read..!

मी वाचायला घेतले, ते एका गैरसमजाला बळी पडून. ह्या पुर्वी ईरावती कर्वेंचे यूगांतर वाचले होते, दुर्गाबाई सुद्धा त्याच धाटणीत लिहितील हा तो गैरसमज. पुस्तक मात्र एखाद्या ललित वाङमय शोभेल असे लिहिले आहे. त्यांनी महाभारतातील काही पात्रांचे रोमांचक असे विवरण केले आहे. प्रस्तावना देखिल पाल्हाळ लावल्या सारखी लांबवीली आहे. मला नाही कळाले हे पुस्तक.
