In trying to expand my reading horizons, I'm trying Romance, which I haven't read (as a genre) for over 25 years. This book seems so highly rated on goodreads that I gave it a shot.
I gave up after 50 pages.
Pros: The brothers had distinctive characteristics and I found it easy to distinguish them. The setup was dramatic, dealing with brotherly conflict and family dynamics, as well as a business on the brink and potential fallout for the entire town. This is the first book in a series, so I imagine that this drama is explored in subsequent books, making for a really in-depth exploration of these brothers' lives.
Cons: The style is not something I'm used to in edited, published works, but reminds me of a fan fiction writer without a trusted beta. The dialogue (both internal and voiced) seemed forced, not how people actually think or speak. There was a lot of "Caden grinned" or "Dalton frowned." Fine, if used sparingly or to detail a particular emotion, but the judicious use of phrases like this make me think this author is an inexperienced one (which is clearly untrue - this author has many credits to her name). There are so many ways to write that a character is pleased or upset or agreeable - they don't always have to grin or frown or nod. I was put off by this style of writing, and knowing that there are two more books in this series led me to cut my losses.
Is this novel indicative of the rest of the genre these days? I will have to keep reading to find out.
I would probably try another Brenda Jackson book, but a one-off, not the first in a series.
