Sary #2

The Chemistry of Fate

Rate this book
“They are everywhere, can be anyone, and are always the last person you’d expect.” When Tom stumbles across his grandfather’s journal, he’s convinced the old man was crazier than he thought. The book contains references to beings called the Sary, immortals who are assigned to save humans on the verge of suicide. They certainly aren’t allowed to fall in love with mortals. Which the journal claims Tom’s grandfather did, resulting in his expulsion from the Sary. As strange as the journal seems, Tom can’t get the stories out of his head; especially when he finds the photo of his grandfather’s wings.

Tom’s only distraction is Ari, the girl he studies with for their chemistry class.

Ari has one goal when she arrives in town: see how much Tom knows about the Sary and neutralize the situation. This isn’t a normal job, but protecting the secrecy of the Sary is vital. If Tom is a threat to exposing the Sary to the public, fate has a way of taking care of the situation, usually ending with the mortal’s death. While Ari spends time with Tom, he becomes more than just an assignment, but how far can a relationship go when she can’t tell him who she really is? When she finds out just how much Tom actually knows about the Sary, Ari is forced to choose between her wings, and her heart.

THE CHEMISTRY OF FATE is a companion to COLORS LIKE MEMORIES and is set before the latter takes place.

If you’ve read my blog you already know I have mad love for Meradeth Houston. Not only is she a sweet person (and funny), but she is a wicked talented author. When I read her debut young adult paranormal Colors Like Memories I was blown away. I love her writing style and the subject matter was so relevant to today’s teens. It’s an awesome book all the way around. I highly recommend it. If you haven’t picked up a copy, get one. You’ll be glad you did.

Based on my experience with Colors Like Memories I had extremely high hopes for The Chemistry Of Fate. I knew it was going to be good, but wow! I had no idea it was going to surpass Colors Like Memories.

I’m always one to look at the first sentence of a book. A lot of my decision to continue to read a book or not hinges on that first sentence. My like or dislike of that sentence decides if I keep reading the paragraph, which, in turn, decides if I read the next paragraph and ultimately the book. Meradeth has a way with first sentences. I still believe the first sentence in Colors Like Memories is the best first sentence I’ve ever read in a book. Period. But, the first sentence in The Chemistry Of Fate rates up there on my list of favorites, too.

“They are everywhere, can be anyone, and are always the last person you’d expect.”

Okay, that got me. Who are they? And why does the person speaking feel the need to mention them? So that sentence made me want to read more and the second sentence…

"I should have said the seat was taken before she sat down."

made me want to keep reading. Why? Why not let her sit there? Who is she?

Meradeth did exactly what great authors do. She presented questions to her readers in the first few sentences. Questions keep readers engaged in the story. They keep them reading to find the answers—and you’ll want to keep reading to find the answers to the questions in The Chemistry of Fate.

I was immediately drawn into the lives of Tom and Ari. I cared about them. I needed to know what happened to them at each stage of the story. I felt their conflicting emotions, their fear, confusion.

Meradeth’s writing style draws me into her stories. I love how she strings words together. It’s almost like a melody. There were so many areas of the book that when I read them I was struck by how beautifully written they were…

“I knew for certain I loved her when I flew in the night sky, and the stars only reminded me of her eyes. I could never utter such a line aloud, but it happened.”

And my ultimate favorite quote from The Chemistry Of Fate:

“Walking from the funeral, leaving her body behind for the last time, I was so full of rage. I longed to hurt something. But then it started to snow. She always loved the snow. And I stood in the white world and wept.”

That touched me and my throat got that ridiculous tight lump in it. You know the one. It comes just before your eyes start to leak. And then my husband teases me for crying over a book, but how can that not touch a part of your heart? The pain in the passage is evident and the writing is beautiful.

I could go on about how much I loved this book. I could tell you what happened in each chapter, but that would spoil the fun for you when you read it. Instead I’m just going to finish my review with my rating, which I’m sure by now you can guess.

Bottom line: Meradeth Houston is an excellent author and I highly recommend The Chemistry Of Fate.

Five Stars—I loved it!

The Chemistry of Fate is Meradeth Houston's second book, although its events occur before those of her first book, Colors Like Memories. Both take place in a world very much like ours, except for the existence of Sary, angel-like beings who are the souls of children who die before taking their first breaths. In their new forms, they are tasked to help those considering suicide. I loved Colors Like Memories, and The Chemistry of Fate did not disappoint.

Ari loves being a Sary; Tom, a human, doesn't know Sary exist. That is until he finds a journal written by his grandfather, who drops hints about his life as a Sary who fell in love with a mortal. Ari has been sent to see how much Tom knows, as humans must not find out about her kind. Not being suicidal, Tom is not a typical assignment for Ari. The more she gets to know him, the more concerned she becomes for his safety. Tom's grandfather left far too much information behind in his journal. And more than that, Ari finds herself falling for Tom. But falling in love with a mortal could cost Ari her wings, just as it cost Tom's grandfather his wings. And it could cost Tom his life.

The pull and push of Tom and Ari's relationship is so well done in this story. There are so many reasons for them not to be together in a romantic way, but the chemistry is undeniable. Beyond the forbidden love story, Houston's ability to suck a reader into her writing with her sensory details is wonderful. The Chemistry of Fate takes place in winter; Houston made me feel the cold, the quiet, the loneliness of the season, so fitting to the mood of the story. And I loved the flying scenes (in both Colors and Chemistry). I really felt like I was soaring along with the Sary, wings spread wide, wind rushing through my hair. The Chemistry of Fate is a beautiful must-read!

I read 'Colors Like Memories' a while back, so I was really excited to read this book.

This companion novel focuses on Tom and Arianna(Ari), this time Ari, who is Sary, has been assigned by the big guys in Sary to watch over Tom and find out what he knows about them.

What Ari doesn't expect, is to like Tom. All Tom wants to do is work hard to earn his scholarship, but along comes Ari. As the story progresses, the two try to fight their feelings, but eventually learn to accept them. We meet other members of the Sary. Some kind, some heartless.

Oh, Tom. He's totally swoonworthy(and he doesn't even know it) works at the animal shelter. Sometimes he's unsure of himself which makes him endearing.

I really liked Ari, and felt sorry for the decisions she had to make.

The Chemistry of Fate is a clean read, with a very sweet, heartbreaking romance and a wonderful HEA for the two characters. I recommend this book.

Tom is intrigued by a journal he found that belonged to his grandfather. The journal is in his grandfather’s handwriting, but seems to contain the most bizarre story Tom has ever read. He isn’t sure if his grandfather was crazy, but he definitely refers to himself as a Sary and describes events Tom can’t believe he actually lived through. He can’t stop thinking about what his grandfather said about the Sary, “They are everywhere, can be anyone, and are always the last person you'd expect.” Considering that he is in over his head in his chemistry class he can’t afford to have his mind other places, especially since he needs to keep his scholarship. When a girl in class, Ari, asks him if he wants to study together he decides to give it a try because he needs to understand the material. Ari is just happy that her plan to get close to Tom to find out if he does know something about the Sary is working. She isn’t prepared for the feelings that he stirs up in her and the attraction that she feels. Luckily, he doesn’t seem interested and doesn’t seem to know anything about the Sary. But, she needs to stick around and make sure because if he does know something, then the Sary will have to take care of Tom and she is quite enjoying getting to know this focused, hardworking guy, who doesn’t seem to have a clue how hot he is. What will happen between Tom and Ari? Just how dangerous is the information that Tom has in his grandfather’s journal? How is this relationship going to change Ari and Tom’s life? You don’t want to miss this captivating tale!

The Chemistry of Fate is a companion novel to Colors Like Memories, but it can stand on its own and can be read first or second. I enjoyed both books, but felt that The Chemistry of Fate was even faster paced and I truly loved the characters. I would give it 4.5 stars and rounded to 5 because the only reason it was getting 4.5 was because I wanted the ending to be a little longer (but that is a good thing- I wasn't ready to let the characters go). I liked how the point of view alternated from chapter to chapter and the insight that we had from both characters’ perspectives had my heart tugging and pulling in different directions. Ari and Tom are both characters that I liked and cared about. I wanted both of them to get what they wanted, but I also wanted to protect both of them from danger. The writing is polished and accessible and I read the whole book in one sitting. I have still been thinking about Tom and Ari since I turned the last page and I hope there will be more books in the Sary Society Series because I haven’t had enough. If you like a good love story with lots of tension and danger around every corner, then pick this one up and you will be taken on a journey you won’t forget. You may also start looking at those around you to see if there really are Sary among us.

Wow, what a story! It had sweet parts what melted my heart and intense parts what made me sit on the edge of my seat. A whole different story about the Sary than in Colors Like Memories.

At the beginning I wondered what this story will be about, who are these characters introduced in here. Soon I found it was very easy to read and I enjoyed what I‘ve read. It kept me interested and wondering what‘s going on here, who is the Sary and who is the assignment. When I finally got it who is the main character and how he is connected to the Sary, I was eager to know more. The story got more and more intense. The more I read, the more I questioned whether it would end happily or not. And I wasn‘t sure till the very end. Very exciting.

It‘s different story than in the first book. First, it tells a story from a different point of view about the Sary and gives some information unknown before. Well, there is whole lot more about them. I couldn‘t have guessed what. Second, it‘s different how the story is told. It‘s still story of now and then, but it had other way of narrating it. I loved it too. And third, this book tells about other topics and creates different emotions than the first one. On the other hand, it‘s still story about relationships, choices and feelings with sweet and sad parts. And I was enjoying it a lot.

Now there‘s a lot more of characters I care about and wonder what‘s ahead for them. And also I wonder what‘s about the Sary left still unknown. I really hope there will be more stories to read.

I was given this book in exchange for honest review (Lovers of Paranormal).

Chemistry of fate is about a young boy, Tom, who found his grandfathers journal which contained references to immortal beings called the sary, who are assigned to help prevent humans from committing suicide. His grandfather fell in love with a human so lost his Sary wings and became mortal. Ary, a Sary herself, is sent out to find out what Tom knows about the Sary and, either convince him that they aren’t real, or report back and allow him to be left to fate. But, as Ary spends time with Tom, she begins to develop an attraction to him and must choose between protecting him or keeping her immortality.
This book was a really good one! It is the best paranormal book I’ve read in a while. Once I started it I legitimately could not put it down. The characters are very well developed and realistic and the book definitely keeps a fast pace. The dialogue and characters are very realistic, something that I believe is really important, especially in fantasy books. This book was also really creative and new. Many paranormal books follow through the same routine and use the same paranormal beings, but I have never read about anything like the Sary. I think it is cool that they are kind of like angels - except they focus on people that are going to commit suicide and they have nothing to do with a God as far as I can tell.
I definitely can’t wait to read the next one! I highly recommend this book.

In this book we meet Tom who has found his grandfather's journal and is trying to make sense of what his Grandfather wrote about. Of course Tom has trouble making sense of the ramblings. Tom also meets Ari a girl in his class who offers to become a study buddy of his.

Ari is on a mission where she needs to find out how much Tom knows about the Sary and whether he is a threat to their existence. What she doesn't count on is falling for him. The more she is around him the more she feels things in her heart she shouldn't. She has had other missions with humans and never had to worry about her heart getting in the way. Something about Tom is different then other guys she has come across.

This book was great story about the mystery of the Sary and the relationship between Tom and Ari. I really enjoyed learning about his grandfather and what he knew, and the fact that his grandfather had wings too.

Definitely a great paranormal others will enjoy especially if you've read Colors Like Memories unlike that one this one predates that story, but again it's involving the Sary and falling in love, and ultimately having to choose between having wings or following your heart.

What a rollicking, soaring read! I don't usually read paranormal YA, so this well-written book was a welcome surprise! Houston's lyrical descriptions of the setting and vivid details about the characters really made the book come alive and seem normal – not even paranormal – but grounded in reality. Carefully constructing her evocative images, the author actually makes it easy to believe that characters can grow wings and have a supernatural existence in a parallel world. The alternating points of view were engaging and added to the believability of the plot. To give everything up for love is an admirable motive, and when Ari loses her wings for love of Tom, it is transformational, indeed. If you're not sure about paranormal, I encourage you to give THE CHEMISTRY OF FATE a test flight – and you won't even need wings!

Another great book by Meradeth! This one I admit took me a little longer to get into, but part of that was because I started reading it like it was a Sequel when it isn't really. It's more of a Partner I think. The style of her writing in this book with it bouncing between the two characters equally was really good, but again I had a little trouble with it in the beginning. I tend to want to skip over chapters to see what happens next. Haha Over all though, I really love this world of the Sary and am hoping that there is more books to come.

Did you ever see City of Angels? Were you intrigued by the concept but disappointed with the results? Well, Meradeth Houston takes the concept, of an immortal who must choose between love and eternal life, and, where City of Angels fails, she succeeds. Love, intrigue, family history, immortality, and a splash of danger blend together in this well told story. THE CHEMISTRY OF FATE is a must read!

MY REVIEW
I received an e-copy of this book direct from the author Meradeth Houston. As I had read Colors Like Memories, I wanted to read this one then. However, when I realised The Chemistry Of Fate was set prior to Colors Like Memories I was a little unsure if it would work for me or not.
So to the cover I like the magical feel of the cover and the colours of cover too. Upon reading the book you realise the "creature" on the cover is in fact Arianne in her Sary form, complete with those gorgeous translucent wings. I find the font of the title and author and their placements are pleasing enough too. the font is loopy or cursive, the way Tom writes, which also harks back to the book plot. the only thing I am unsure of is the snowflake images on the cover. Although they are nice enough and yes they fit in with the snow happening in the book, I don't believe they are 100% necesary.
So would the cover alone make me pick up the book? I think on cover alone, discounting the fact I've read part of the series, ...yes I would pick it up to read the blurb and learn more about the book.
So Arianne or Ari as she prefers to be called is on assignment. Her assignment is Tom. So why is Ari checking out what Tom knows about the Sary and if he is a danger to exposing them? Well Tom's grandfather wrote a journal and after he died Tom got some of his things and took the journal to read. The journal is written by Tom's grandfather, it talks all about the Sary. So how come Tom's grandfather survived with knowledge of the Sary? Well Tom's Grandfather . . . .. well you'll need to read the book to find out more about the journal in it.
The problem the Sary have with Tom is whether he believes what is written in his grandfathers journal or not. Then there's the whole problem of whether Tom has any other evidence and what he may or may not do about it.
So Ari is tasked to find out exactly whats going on and report back for the Island to decide how to progress, and what action to take.
Ari has to get close to Tom . . . . the only thing is she starts to like Tom, I mean really really like Tom. What is the Sary on The Island find out? Then Tom starts to become suspicious of who/what Ari is, which is even more worrying as if a Sary reveal his true self or her true self, and/or their wings, the price the Sary pays is the loss of those wings. The loss of the wings is the end of life as a Sary. For when a Sary loses their wings they become mortal.
This book is full of great information about the Sary, we meet more sary, and discover that there are "rogue Sary" who think it their job to become the deliverer of fate. So we learn some of the Sary politics in this book, perhaps setting the scene for more Sary politics in futures books too. There's also a little romance in this book too. So it has love, friendship, Sary controversy, action and a little mystery too.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes, I did enjoy it. Would I recommend this book? Yes, I'm hoping its part of a longer series, where perhaps we will learn much more about the Sary and The Island. Would I read more of this Series? Yes I think I would, though I would want to know more about the Sary, how they come about and how they live on the Island. Maybe there could be a Sary "war" about who should lead them after the certain things that happened in this book. Would I read more by Meradeth Houston? Yes, I would, I love her style of writing and the books though they have action and angst do also contain happiness too.

Our family is a huge part of who we are. So when Tom discovers his grandfather's journal, he wants to know more about the man. What he doesn't suspect is that his grandfather was a Sary--an angel born from the soul of a child who died before taking his/her first breath. Without this 'breath of life' he/she and others like him/her must help those on the verge of suicide. (from Colors Like Memories description)

But the Sary don't want humans knowing about them, so they send Ari to watch Tom and make sure he doesn't connect the dots. If he does, as history has proven, he will meet an untimely end. Ari is on assignment, but she starts to fall for Tom as she spends time with him. When she realizes how much he does know, all she wants to do is keep him safe. If the Sary find out she's withholding information, she will lose her wings. Can she save Tom without losing herself?

Two interesting characters destined to be together plus an intriguing race of angels equals a wonderful read. I was invested in Tom from page one, and I found myself rooting for Ari and Tom to be together--for true love to win out over the Sary's rules. The only thing holding me back from a 5-star rating was a feeling that I needed more background about the Sary.

On the back cover, which is included before the start of the book in Kindle format, the author clearly states: THE CHEMISTRY OF FATE is a companion to COLORS LIKE MEMORIES and is set before the latter takes place. From page one, I felt like I was missing some crucial information about the Sary (especially a clear explanation of what they are and what their mission really is). But in the end, Tom and Ari's tale swept me away. Now, I just need to get my hands on Colors like Memories.

Note: I received a complimentary copy for review purposes. A positive review was not guaranteed or requested; the opinions expressed are my own.

*I received this book from the author via Lovers of Paranormal Book Club on GoodReads*

This story is almost a companion prequel to Colors Like Memories. I'm not sure exactly how soon before Colors this one takes place, but the fact that there's internet places it no more than 22 years before Colors (IF Colors took place this year).
I was a tad confused with the Ezekial character.. If I'm not mistaken, there's a Sary with the same name in Colors as well which threw me off for a bit.
This story however centers around Arianne who's assignment is to figure out exactly how much about society Thomas knows and how he knows what he does know.
After reading Colors, this one had a slow start for me. It's just as good as Color without a doubt, but if it's possible, read this one before hand since the events happen before and the rules the Sary follow are very much different in this one than in Colors.
I would honestly love to what fate befalls Ezekiah since the story sort of just ended. No climatic ending, it was just over with Ezekial being a loose end. I hope this author writes more for this series as it paints guardian angels in a way that I hadn't seen before and the tales are very much enjoyable.
I give this book 5 of 5 paws

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Meradeth Houston.)
673-year-old Ari is a Sary – a type of angel that guides people when they consider committing suicide.
Ari latest mission is different though, a boy called Tom has found a journal that once belonged to his grandfather, which documents his life as a Sary, and how he gave up his wings because he was in love with a human girl.

Ari needs to determine how much of the journal Tom believes, and whether he is going to tell anyone about it, but as she investigates, they start to fall in love.
Does Tom believe what he’s read? What will happen if Ari can’t convince him that it’s untrue? And is there any hope for Ari now that she’s fallen in love with Tom?

This was an okay paranormal romance, and I liked the idea of the Sary.

Ari was a sweet girl, and Tom was very dedicated to his studies, so much so that it took a while for him to really pay attention to Ari. It was sweet how she persisted in her duties to investigate Tom though, all the while falling in love with him. Ari’s housemates on the other hand weren’t very nice to her, and weren’t very supportive of her either which was a shame.

The storyline was okay, although I would have maybe liked a little more information of the Sarys and what they did. I thought that the romance between Ari and Tom was quite sweet, even if they both tried to fight it at first, and it was nice how their relationship almost mirrored that of Tom’s grandfather and grandmother.
I liked the way this book ended, and although it wasn’t maybe 100% what Tom and Ari would have wanted, at least they were happy.
Overall; an okay YA paranormal/angel romance story.
6.5 out of 10.

Before I started reading this I assumed the Sary where Angels, but they’re not, they are something else. A Sary is an angel like being created by the soul of a child who dies before taking its first breath, they have wings and their purpose is to help people who are contemplating suicide. People are not supposed to find out about the Sary, so when Tom finds his grandfathers journal in which he talks about being Sary, Tom comes under secret investigation from the Sary in an attempt to find out what he knows and destroy any evidence he may have….

While I enjoyed the story I found it took me a long while to connect with Tom or Ari, we never really got long enough with either of them as the book changed POV at every chapter, which was in a way comforting because you were never far away from finding out what the other one was thinking/feeling. The story itself unfolded at a nice steady pace and Houston does a great job at catching the reader and dragging them into the world that she has written.

Everywhere I look I see people stating that The Chemistry of Fate is a must-read companion to Colors Like Memories, but honestly if you haven’t read Colours like Memories you can still read this. It works great as a stand alone. That being said I do want to read Colors Like Memories.

First, let me explain what a Sary is. It's an angel who is created from a child who dies before taking their first breath. Now, the Sary are secret - no one is supposed to know about them and no one is supposed to fall in love with them. But Tom's grandfather did and he journalled about it.

The Sary send Ari to see how much Tom really knows and from there, it's a love story that will make you cry and warm your heart. I read the first book in the series, Colors like Memories, but The Chemistry of Fate is supposed to happen before that book. It makes a great companion, but I believe it could stand well on it's own merit if you haven't read the first book.

However, Meradeth is a spectacular storyteller and a wiz with just the right words to set each scene. I could see them play out in my mind and I found myself invested in the characters and the outcome. I can't wait to see what Meradeth writes next - she's just so eloquent!! Highly recommend!!

Do you remember the first time you saw or captured a lightning bug in a jar? That sense of wonder is akin to what I felt when Houston introduced me to the Sary in her first book. In this, Houston's second Sary story, the wonder continues, and revelations abound.

What happens when a Sary and a mortal fall in love? Is a match like that doomed from the get-go? I mean, after all, no matter what she looks like to him now, she IS more than 600 years old, and HE'S a still-wet-behind-the-ears college student. Does it matter that she's actually experienced the times and events he's only read about in a history book? Does it matter that she's immortal? Maybe not. Maybe the only thing that matters is he knows too much about the secretive Sary, so Fate may have to step in and kill the relationship... by killing him. Can she save his life? Can she save her wings? A lightning bug is just a bug without its light; what happens to a Sary if she loses her beautiful wings?

This is the first book I have read from Meradeth Houston. If Colors Like Memories is anything like The Chemistry of Fate then I am sure I will love it. Ari is a Sary sent on an assignment to find out what Tom knows about the Sary. As they get to know each other and spending more time together they start to fall in love. The more Ari finds out what Tom knows the more she feels like she has to protect him but instead things start going very wrong for both of them. I really liked that Tom and Ari's relationship was not wild and crazy it seemed more sweet and innocent. Every chapter switches from Tom to Ari's point of view so you know how they both feel. It is a very beautiful and romantic story.

Tom has possession of his grandfather’s journal, part of which is in Persian and the rest of it talks about creatures known as the “Sary.” He thinks it’s all bizarre, but the reality is that his grandfather was one of the Sary.

Ari enters his world. She’s beautiful and into him. Her interest isn’t fake at all, even though she’s not really a college student. In fact, she’s hundreds of years old. She’s a Sary who needs to ensure that Tom doesn’t reveal his knowledge of these beings to others. The truth has a way of coming out and the two are in danger.

The Chemistry of Fate is high on romance and suspense. I adore this paranormal series. This is just as good as book 1 and I plan on reading book 3.

Ari loved her job until she meet Tom her next assignment, a mortal that knows all about the Sary existence.
Ari makes one mistake after another that can cost Tom his life and her wings.

The question is what will she give up to save Tom from his fate ?

This is a great read and a must have in your library !!!

Meradeth Houston did it again in this sequel to COLORS LIKE MEMORIES. We learn more about the Sary, their duties, and their interactions with humans as Ms. Houston weaves a tale of love and sacrifice that will break your heart.

My only complaint is the end came to soon, leaving me waiting for the release of book three!

I loved reading about the Sary. I'm a big sucker for paranormal romance. I'm usually into more naughtier version of paranormal romance but this is a great book for YA readers. I give the novel a 5Star review. Wonderful job.

First I have to emphasize that paranormal isn't really my thing and I loved this book. It is, first and foremost, a romance and a new adult one at that. You couldn't help but root for Tom and Ari (the Sary!) from page one all the way to the end.

The story line was okay, the character work was good, and the book had a fairly smooth flow to it. The story seemed a little one note to me. I was unable to connect to the characters, but I was entertained by the book.

This is the 1st book I've read written by Meradeth Houston; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

I loved the characters.

The Chemistry of Fate by Meradeth Houston
Book Two (companion novel) of the Sary Society series
Publisher: MuseItUp Publishing
Publication Date: April 25, 2013
Rating: 3 stars
Source: eARC provided by the author

Summary (from Goodreads):

What I Liked:

This book was a quick read, which was refreshing for me, as I have recently been reading a ton of long historical fiction novels. And then an AMAZING YA fantasy novel. I liked how fast I read this book, because it gave me time to digest the book, and reflect on what I had read.

I loved that this book was in dual point-of-views. I enjoyed reading from Tom's point-of-view much more than reading from Ari's point-of-view. Tom is so sweet and honest and courageous - and half the time he doesn't realize it. I didn't really get the whole hot-male-vibe from him, which could be a good thing or a not-so-good thing, because I feel like the author was trying to give him that quality.

The story itself was okay. The ending is good. Predictable, but good. No love triangle! People looking for a nice, simple romance will definitely fall for Tom and Ari!

Also, I LOVE the cover. Like, a lot. I think the pink and the shimmers are beautiful!

What I Did Not Like:

I had a couple of big problems with this book. For one, the plot. It was predictable, and really, it amounted to a few events. I didn't like how the entire book was focused on solely the romance. At least try and and have some other dynamic to the book! It would have cut down on the more boring parts, and added more dimension to the plot.

Also, I did not like Ari. She's not a heroine I enjoyed following. She has no spine.

I didn't understand the supernatural beings - the Sary. I feel like they weren't explained very well. And I wish we could have had a scene with the Sary in action, you know, fulfilling their purpose. Doing what they are supposed to do, not babysitting a mortal. Instead, we get Ari, the girl with no backbone, who does not know what she wants.

I did not like Ari. Wings, no wings. Boy, no boy. PICK ONE. Life is hard. Decisions are hard. I feel like she did not deserve her ending with Tom. For a Sary, she is not very tough. I feel bad for Tom. He deserves better.

The Sary beings sound like the Revenants from Amy Plum's books. But with wings. Just saying.

Despite all of that, I enjoyed the book. I may not read it again, but it was worth the read.

Would I Recommend It:

If you read the first book, Colors Like Memories, then I think this is a great companion novel. I did not read Colors Like Memories before reading The Chemistry of Fate. Otherwise, it is not a must-read.

Rating:

3 stars. I enjoyed this book when I was reading it, but it probably is not the right book for me.

Lucee Lovett Reviews The Chemistry of Fate

The Chemistry of Fate, introduced me to mystical beings known as Sary’s. A type of angel, created from the spiritual essence of babies who died before taken their first breath. They are immortal, they look human and walk the earth. The story is told from two point of view. That of the main character Tom and Ari the Sary who is assigned to investigate Tom. The story begins with Tom. He has found a journal written by his grandfather a Sary who gave up his immortality and wings to be with Tom Grandmother. The Sary existence is a secret from humans and they want to remain that way. Basically this is a boy meets girl ‘angel’ romance. The plot is predictable and a little dry. This said it was not an unpleasant read. It was interesting but lacked essence. The Sary were immortalised to serve a purpose which I was not given an opportunity to be apart off in this story. I like the idea of the Sary and I like the book. Nevertheless I finished this book feeling cheated.
