Yeah wow... Where do I start.
Jayne (with a y, "so unusual") can see people's deaths. But only sometimes. Only if she makes eye contact with someone who smells like lemons.

Also she says "criminy". A lot. And lord is she dumb.

It's like the author had a great idea and then didn't know how to construct a plot around it. Or had ever met a teenager, ever. These teens talk like 50 year old women and don't know how cell phones work.

Things start to go wrong for Jayne when a serial killer moves into her home town and she accidentally Sees a girl die at his hands. She can't really give that her full attention though because a really cute guy also moved to town at the same time and is constantly flirting with her.

Hmmm.

I received this eBook for FREE and was pleasantly surprised. Once I started I couldn't stop reading it. I finished it in about 2 days because I was sneaking in a few pages here & there when I should've been doing other things. Oops! It was a nice, easy read. The part where she finds out the unusual reasons for her gift/curse was the only part that made it feel a little bit paranormal. As if her gift/curse was just a normal thing.

Jayne is plagued by visions showing horrible deaths, and when she sees the death of her love interest, she thinks it's as bad as it can get.
She's wrong. When a serial killer is on the loose and Jayne sees the death of one of his victims, She must put herself in danger to end the reign of his terror.

Jayne was a really good character. She was strong, compassionate and very brave. Not only did she deal with the visions on her own, she went after a murderer. The only problem i had with her, was the fact she kept going hot and cold with Aaron. The reason she did was understandable though. I mean, how would you feel seeing how your boyfriend died? especially when you see who he was married too?
Unfortunately, even though i kept on reminding myself of this, it still didn't make it anymore annoying!

I did like Dana. When she did finally find out about Jayne's physic gifts, she wasn't annoyed for very long. She supported her though it.

Overall, This was a great little murder mystery. Filled with great characters, mystery and a little bit of mythology.

Inevitable is a well-written book and edited so skillfully it's practically error free. The story line captured my interest from the beginning and made the book hard to put down. I loved the characters and found their voices and dialogue a perfect fit for a young adult audience. Jayne's gift was intriguing, not to mention a bit mind-blowing to consider what that might be really like--if it were possible for a person to have a gift/curse like that. I found myself wrapped up in her, caring about her, and of course rooting for her and for the the guy she liked. Because of that, the suspense had me turning the pages every chance I got. I gave it four stars because I really think the author knows what she's doing. I'm looking forward to reading more from her.

Where do I begin? I really, really enjoyed this book. Jayne was a very well rounded character. She had cool parents, but not so cool she never got punished. She skipped a lot of work due to her visions, and lost her job. There were consequences for her actions, which I found very refreshing in a YA novel.

Now, with that out of the way, if I were Jayne and had her visions, which were introduced by the smell of lemons, I'd quickly remove anything linked to lemons from my life. Even the color yellow.

Jayne can see the deaths, or fates, of certain people. Not everyone pops up on her lemon scented radar. She can tell who they are by the aroma surrounding them. All she has to do is make eye contact. Sometimes she can avoid it for awhile, but that is just putting off the, well, inevitable. But when it catches her off guard, if she looks someone in the eye a split second before the scent reaches her, she's caught up in the terrifying vision of that person's demise. So when she sees a young woman murdered, and sees the face of her killer, she doesn't know what to do. If she goes to the police to tell them of these visions, Jayne's afraid she'll end up locked away for being crazy.

Jayne's best friend doesn't learn about Jayne's secret until after Jayne sees a vision of a boy associated to her. But once she knows, she's as supportive as ever, and only miffed for a little bit.

Great cast of characters in this book, great story telling at a perfect pace. Also, very, very clean! Which is a huge plus for a YA book! Kudos to Tamara for her excellent writing skills. I'd recommend this book to parents of teens who don't want their kids reading a lot of cussing or sexual content.

First line:

"The smell always hit me first."

I loved the idea of smelling death as lemony in this book. Jayne has the gift, or curse, of 'smelling' death on someone and if she looks into their eyes, she will have a vision of their death. With this gift/curse, one would think they could stop the death but Jayne doesn't have that power, so really, she's powerless.

She hasn't been able to look her sister in the eye since a lemony smell showed up on her not too long ago. How can Jayne know her sisters death when she can't stop it?

Then a cute boy with an accent shows up smelling like lemons. And he's attracted to her. But once she sees his death she doesn't know if she should pursue him or leave him alone because he will die tragically.

And on top of all this angst, Jayne 'sees' a young woman die, who is the victim of a serial killer. When Jayne helps the police sketch a profile of the killer, the killer starts stalking Jayne.

Jayne's relationship with her sister drove me crazy for more than half the book as she chose to avoid and actually snub her. I understood she didn't want to see how her sister died because she couldn't stop the future, but still! Maybe Jayne could lessen any pain? Fear?

And I couldn't figure out why the cute boy kept trying to be friends with Jayne when she kept avoiding his eyes and blowing him off. I think after a couple of times a normal boy would have said forget it.

I had a hard time putting down this book! The story and flow and tension kept me reading, wanting to know if Jayne would be able to save the boy or her sister. Overall, I'd say this is a book worth reading.

I had this book on my Kindle and planned to read it while I was on my mini vacation last week. But I took a peek at the first chapter and well...one thing lead to another and I ended up finishing it before I left for Florida. LOL!

The main character Jayne has an unusual "gift". She sees visions of people's deaths--if they're going to die early and in a tragic circumstance. Heavy stuff for a teenager! But to make matters worse, she gets herself involved in a murder investigation through this gift and then things really get interesting.

This book had a little bit of everything: a teen love story, murder/suspense, and a little paranormal/fantasy.

I have to say the murders/suspense thing kept me turning the pages. I couldn't wait to see how everything was going to work out in the end. Very enjoyable read!

I really enjoyed this book by Heiner, though I don't read too many paranormal romances. I *REALLY* loved the paranormal part. Though I'm not big on romances, I actually found the relationship between Jayne and her new boyfriend (and even her old boyfriend) intriguing. I guess it helps that Heiner is a good writer who is easy and enjoyable to read.

But I really gobbled up the paranormal part of this story, and how that fleshed out by the end of the story. This had better NOT be a standalone book because this sets up for a fun series. In other words, the ending was satisfying and I want more, and I always consider that a good book worth reading.

I loved this book! The story line pulls you to it's end. I can't say close because I'm still thinking about Jayne and her amazing abilities and opportunities!

The first chapter introduces Jayne and her security network and almost immediately you get drawn into her life as mystery builds around her and she struggles to understand what her visions mean for her.

I'm already reading it for the second time :) I love a book that keeps me thinking long after I've turned the last page!

Really liked the concept and the action. This one definitely kept me reading and wondering just who the serial killer could be. There were some things that I wish had been flushed out a little more and could have added depth to the story. I felt like at times the author only skimmed the surface of her minor characters when I wanted her to dive deep (especially with Aaron and Dana).

A surprisingly intriguing paranormal/urban fantasy read. It takes a bit of time to get going, lulling somewhat into your usual YA high school boys-boys-boys sort of storyline, but at least has the decency to be realistic about it rather than full of overblown melodrama.

We have a girl called Jayne who has visions of people dying, kicking off the book straight away when she Sees her ex-boyfriend's dad's death. Oh boy, not good. She's been having these strange visions for six years at least, and knows one's about to happen when she smells lemon. Unfortunately, he little sister Beth has started to smell citrus-fresh, so she's had to avoid eye contact for fear of Seeing something she can't change. Because no matter how she's tried, nothing ever changes fate. If that wasn't enough, she's struggling through high school, trying to hold down a job, ignoring local news about serial killers, and her ex was a cheating so-and-so with entitlement issues. Then in walks hottie transfer kid Aaron; swoon! Except... He smells of lemon...

Summerised like that, it sounds kinda silly but it keeps things simple: girl has visions while also having Boy Problems #welcometoreallife

I liked Jayne's narration. She's a pretty level headed teen in a YA paranormal scene usually full of screeching, swooning airheads. Yes, she has the usual "do I like him? OMG yesbut no but yes but-" inner dialogues where she thinks about muscle groups and how nice a guy smells, but her attraction felt realistic rather than the hormonal cliches that usually get overblown in romance reads. Her friend Dana seemed more the usual foolish teen despite being older, and to be honest I hated how she pushed for Jayne to get back with her cheating ex like it was fine to just shrug it off. Also ex Stephen was just horrible. I cheated but I apologised after the new girl dumped me, why are you angry with me (btw let's make out)? Nope. New love interest Aaron was weirdly exoticised for being British (as someone from across the Pond, I found both that and his speech patterns weird - was he a posho? Some of his turns of phrase didn't match that... And it was weird that a just-moved Brit would say "math" so soon after moving without being ironic #maths #justsaying). Their backwards-forwards relationship was strange, but I could live with it.

The story started with a bang - all those visions! - but then slowed down into the usual high school stuff with a side-order of investigative journalism thriller where the paranormal aspect really took the back seat. There's plenty of action right at the end, but I felt that the explanations weren't really very helpful. They were just a bit take it or leave it and left a few holes in the paranormal bits that felt unfilled. I like the idea of it not being your usual Greek mythology stuff, but not being familiar with it would also mean it needed a bit more explanation.

I'm not usually one for YA high school romances, but this one had promise because of not being over hormonal or full of overblown love triangles. Overall the easy to read style and the mysterious mythological aspect made me want to carry on with the series.

(Though if she keeps saying criminy..!)

„Inevitably“ by Tamara Heiner is a rather interesting first book in the YA paranormal UF series “The Goddess of Fate” revolving around Jayce a teenager girl with a strange gift, that allows her to relive the death of a person by entering his/her soul at the time of passing. For Jayce the gift has becoming an unstoppable curse that is about to become a nightmare when she stumbles on the path of a serial killer going rampant in her hometown. Not only if she able to see through the eyes of the victims, she becomes painfully aware that the killer knows about it and she has suddenly become a target. Death is not more a horrible vision, that repeats itself through the experiences of unfamiliar people, it becomes the very personal and has to be avoided at all cost, before it becomes a permanent condition.

Tamara Heiner depiction of Jayne is somehow erratic at times, her mood changes seem a little to extreme to be only attributed to adolescence, and her nature of the gift is not always coherent, but all in one Jayne is a relatable teenager character more than not, the plot is interesting and well written, with a clear prose and a good blend of action, mystery and teenager romance. A good start into a new YA UF series that could surely improve in the following installments, when Jayne becomes more attuned to her own gift/curse.

In INEVITABLE, Jayne witnesses visions of people dying horribly. It's accompanied by a lemony smell and after she looks them in the eyes. Because of this, Jayne is not a people person, but can you blame her?

When Aaron comes into the picture, Jayne gets the lemony smell instantly and avoids eye contact for as long as possible. But, Aaron is persistent and wants to take Jayne out so it's only a matter of time before she meets his gaze. Especially since he goes to her school.

Jayne needs to learn more about her gift so she can start saving people because every time she tries, it doesn't work. They still die a tragic death. With a serial killer in the picture, Jayne feels the need to solve the case, so it only puts more on her plate. Can Jayne get the murderer off the streets before she sees any more people dying by his hands? Even if it means putting herself in the line of fire?

Final Verdict: This was a book that I couldn't put down. I loved Jayne and Dana's friendship and I loved Aaron. This was an interesting take on visions of the future and I recommend it to people who love a good mystery with a twist of romance and premonitions.

I absolutely loved this read / listen. By the end I could hardly stand to pause it to do anything else. Incredibly well written paranormal, YA read with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure. I really liked Jayne is some regards but poor Aaron, she was so wishy washy with him - it was driving me nuts - I can't image how he must have felt and then for her to act all confused (really?!?) but such is the life of a teen girl. I remember being crazy too so I don't blame her too much - plus, she has to deal with her "sight" on top of it all and a local murder is on the loose. Emerson does a fantastic job with the narration of these characters - tones and accents are incredibly well done. Overall this book grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go - this is one of those reads / listens that you tell people about thinking they should know what your talking about cause - how could they not! I love it when a read captures me fully and this one did just that - I hope there is more!

Wonderful!!! The author has a well written and flowing story, I almost didn’t want to go to bed because I wanted to find out what happened next. You have Gods and monsters for sure in this book. The main characters had the ups and downs that teenagers go thru and make it to adulthood. The killer in this book has a few things up his sleeve that will surprise you. I don’t know why she tried to keep secret what she could do. Law enforcement in this day and age use physics a lot, and mediums are on TV. The narrator did an awesome job with each character showing excitement where appropriate. I love books like this that explore the paranormal that can be found in normal people. Throw in a goddess or two and you have a great adventure.

I received a free audio copy of this book directly from the author for an honest review.

I would say this is a great introduction into crime fiction for young adults. This is a paranormal crime crossover which is a very interesting mix. This is definitely a slow burn and ever so slightly repetitive at the beginning waiting for this story to really kick off but once it does it’s a really addictive read. The MC is really well fleshed out and although doesn’t make choices I would make she makes the choices a typical teenager would whilst being a very strong character for the most part. I loved her best friend Dana and their friendship spoke volumes throughout this book. Arron and Steven were interesting I kinda just wanted to knock their heads together at times 😅 but again this is pretty typical behaviours of a lot of teenagers so it works really well in this story.

Jayne sees visions of how people will die and she thinks that watching her boyfriend die is the worst thing that can happen to her. But when she witnesses a murder, she gets caught up in a dangerous world of intrigue and suspense. It turns out that she’s not the only one doing the stalking. The killer is on her trail and none of her visions can tell her how she’s going to die.

I really enjoyed this book and found it to be an interesting, easy read. I thought Jayne was a perfectly imperfect character and particularly enjoyed her friendship with Dana and her relationship with Aaron. I really found the explanation of how she gained her ability to be imaginative and could tell that the author has done a good bit of research into folklore. This author definitely has talent and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

I am thankful to Tamara Hart Heiner for providing me with an electronic copy of this book. I understand that receiving it in this manner does not obligate me to leave a positive review and all opinions expressed in this review are fully my own.

This book was totally not what I was expecting. It’s hard to say though what I actually expected lol. This isn’t my usual kind of read but I was intrigued enough to keep reading. So that’s a definite positive!

I enjoyed reading and learning more about the characters and her friends and Mr British hottie lol.

I really did feel for Jayne and how she had to basically go through her life with this ability of Sight with no guidance, I couldn’t imagine going through seeing tragic deaths as Part of your day to day life and still stay sane. She was a strong lead character, although at times I did get annoyed with her for not really seeming to try to change things or her tendency to be whiny because she knew such and such would happen or just in general. I kinda just wanted to go “Go for it girl!” But then I also understood her reservations and need to protect herself or let things go.

I enjoyed how the story unfolded although at times it did feel a little slow but I did like the build up towards the end where we learn a whole slew of information. It leaves it open for the stories continual development into the following book.

I got a bit creeped out by the whole investigation thing for the serial killer (which the book does revolve around lol) and how he began stalking her...i think it was because that just seemed a little too real lol. And it sorta messed with my Paranoia... but all in all It wasn’t a bad read.

I’m curious to see what happens next and how her abilities grow and seeing her develop in her understanding of who she is and her purpose in the world.

Thanks for this opportunity to read your books Tamara.

Anyways Happy Readings My Nerdy Friends! 🤓

YA paranormal romance is a little outside of my genre, but I found the hook intriguing. The smell of lemons means death, definitely grabbed my attention.

Jayne is a high school girl who wants a normal life, not to See people's deaths. Poor Jayne. She wants to do so much good and change her visions but doesn't understand how to. Add on top of her troubles a serial killer who's trying to make her his next victim.

There are many relatable themes for teens and adults throughout the story.

It's a clean read. No language. A few simple kisses. There is underage drinking.

Ms. Heiner did a nice job of weaving together entangling elements to keep the reader captivated and wanting to know what happens next.

Sometimes when Jayne touches a person she can see their horrific death that includes her Sister and the new English boy at school who she is falling for. She has a premonition about a girl who is killed by a serial killer and she goes to the police and somehow he finds out and now he’s after her too.
Although this book is in the YA category I really enjoyed it and I’m 57 . There’s a few twists and turns and it keeps you guessing however I guessed a certain person had links to the serial killer but I won’t spoil it for future listeners.
Lucy Emerson did a great job with the narration and I commend her on Aaron’s English accent.

When I started this book I was afraid I wasn’t going to enjoy it. The jumping from life to visions of deaths was abrupt at times and threw me off at first.

After reading through and finding out more background from the character and her story it was easier to connect the series of events throughout the book.

The author brought a lot of feeling to the characters and I was happy with the flow. Job well done.

Jayne is not your ordinary high school teenager. She can see someone's death when looking into their eyes which is why she avoids looking anyone in the eye, including her own family and even her best friend. But there is a serial killer loose in her town and Jayne has seen his face in the eyes of one of his victims. Lots of suspense and drama as well as some romance with a new guy in school. Great storytelling.

Interesting YA read, creative twists on unknowns of mythology. Jayne is a high school student challenged by a secret power - she can smell death - and she doesn't know why. This book is the first in her journey, learning about her power, why she has it, and what she can do with it. All of this while trying to be your average teenager, going to school, making car payments, trying to work a part-time job, and falling out or into love.

Inevitable is the first in a 4 book series, and I was able to read them in order, thanks to the author supplying me with the books in return for my review.
