Kelley takes readers on an armchair journey through the Inside Passage, a thousand miles of natural wonders. Simpson chronicles a trip along the romantic mainline route from Bellingham to Skagway, as well as describing the seagoing life of crew members, the history of the ferry system, and the character and charm of rural ferry routes. 100 color photos. 4 maps.
Though this book wasn't meant to be exhaustive in detail, I do wish there was more to read. It ended up being a short, but well-written and engaging book. The author knows life in Alaska, and accurately describes many of the idiosyncrasies of the towns and villages as well as the unique mindsets of the people. This book vividly took me back to day-trips on the Alaskan ferries between Juneau and Skagway--what they were like, where they went, and what we saw pass by. Mark Kelley is also a premier Alaska photographer, and his images in this book don't disappoint.
Amazing photography. One of the few travel guides to actually make me want to, you know, actually travel to its featured location. Bonus points for mentioning that Alaska is the capital of Russian America.
